I think it was cheaper to buy it at Walmart stores. Last year, I compared the prices and bought one from a Walmart store.

Which one is cheaper can be a function of when you check. Promotional pricing sometimes aligns, but not always.flyingaway wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 7:33 pm I think it was cheaper to buy it at Walmart stores. Last year, I compared the prices and bought one from a Walmart store.
Both Amazon and Walmart were neck-and-neck tied at $22.49 for lowest price last year around Thanksgiving weekend. (See this thread for blow-by-blow account of last year's horse race in pricing.) New Egg was also at that price point at the same time, if I recall correctly.
Camel Camel Camel shows a consistent pattern for Amazon pricing of Block Deluxe plus State, indicating that year after year you can reliably get the lowest (or close to the lowest) price of the year around Thanksgiving weekend.
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
if you pre-order directly it says available "by November 12"...has it usually been available earlier than the projected date in past years?
if not, then I'd just wait another couple of weeks to order it from a 3rd party like Amazon during their Black Friday sales.

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
I got the same offer and placed an order. I want the software on Nov. 7th so I can play with the numbers. I plan to do an RMD on Dec. 15 and withhold instead of doing quarterly taxes.LadyGeek wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 8:52 pm It's that time again. I just received my first email offering H&R Block Deluxe + State software for $39.95. The software is released (becomes available for download) November 7.
Do I buy now and then regret not waiting until Black Friday deals roll around? Hard to say. Stay tuned.

I used two computers, but it was more complicated than this. I needed to have the HRB files for both states on the computer I used to file. After installing the second state on the second computer, I copied state 1 files to computer 2 and state 2 files to computer 1, then could work on either computer to do everything. However, I needed to recopy after each state update, as I could only update the state 1 HRB files on computer 1, and state 2 files on computer 2.nalor511 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 7:30 pmI think you might need two computers. I think this year I'll wait until I'm completely done with fed and state 1 before copying the 2nd state files to computer 1 and vice versa.
The other benefit of buying two copies is that you can efile 10 federal returns for free, and I prepare more than 5 returns each year for family and friends.

Turbotax here I come, I have been stupidly paying $125-225 for online turbotax personal+business many years when I realized last year that the desktop version is half the price. TT rips you online. BTW H&R Block also can get good deals on ebay.com

What files are you referring to here when you copy from one computer to other. What is the extension of these files ?
Thank you.

I had messed around copying some other files, but these seemed to be the only ones necessary to copy after an update. I'm not sure if any of the other files I copied mattered.

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Indeed. I will be passing on this deal. History indicates I will likely score a better price waiting for Amazon's traditional Black Friday deal on Block Deluxe plus State.
Buying tax software (even purportedly brandname software) from sketchy unknown vendors is potentially dangerous. You are providing a lot of sensitive financial information (name, DOB, SSN of yourself, spouse, dependents, bank account routing and account numbers, and more) to your software. Identity theft arising from use of nonreputable fly-by-night vendors is a risk.
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Whoa! Thanks for the warnings! I was just about to order it and NOW I WON'T. I googled them and will avoid them.

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Yes for people that do not need it. [According to the Tax Foundation, eight states currently don't tax residents' personal income: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — and for the first time in 2021 — Tennessee.]
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
The Deluxe+State version at Amazon dropped by about $10 last night - down from $44.99 to $34.97. I'm hoping there will be another price drop to the $20-25 range after Thanksgiving.

Time to fire up Camelcamelcamel for the Amazon low price... also Newegg usually has a good Black Friday price.

Don’t click on the buy button just yet. History has a tendency to repeat itself.
Patience folks, the price will continue to fall this week, just like it has in the past.

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Hopefully this doesn't derail this thread too much, but what's the general opinion on H&R block vs. TurboTax for personal taxes? Last year I used TurboTax for personal, and I like the nice GUI and interview questions. I used H&R block for filing S-corp taxes, because I read the corporate version of TurboTax was bare-bones and very expensive. I found the H&R block corp taxes to be a little clunky but I was able to fumble my way through. Maybe I try personal with H&R block this year? I'm not nuts about copying basic information over, but it would be one-time, and I don't have rental properties or anything that require lots of assets to be copied, etc.
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
fyre4ce,
I think that you can transfer Turbo to HR Block and vice versa.
HR Block Deluxe with state works well for me since I switched from Turbo 10+ years ago.
I would speculate that both will do the job.

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
I think it's like Apple vs Android. Either is able to do almost anyrhing you need, but each person has their preference on which is best. I used TT for several years, but one year H&R Block was a better deal so I gave it a try. I liked H&R better and have been using it since. I'm sure there are a lot of people who moved the other direction too.fyre4ce wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 2:23 am Hopefully this doesn't derail this thread too much, but what's the general opinion on H&R block vs. TurboTax for personal taxes? I switched from TurboTax Deluxe to Block Deluxe 7 years ago and importing prior year data was extremely smooth and easy, really no different from importing prior year data staying on TT.fyre4ce wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 2:23 am Hopefully this doesn't derail this thread too much, but what's the general opinion on H&R block vs. TurboTax for personal taxes? I originally switched out of frustration (2014 TurboTax had a bug which was making it impossible to do my 2014 taxes correctly and it was sufficiently obscure/arcane that I doubted it would be a high priority for TT to address.) So I switched to Block when a post on this forum alerted me it could be purchased very cheaply, was happy to see my taxes done correctly, and I have been happy with Block ever since.
Some day, I aspire to have simplified my financial life (Marie Kondo-ing it, I call it!) sufficiently that I don't need software, but that day is not today. Too many carryovers (charitable donations of appreciated stock, TLH capital losses, and solar credits.) Solar credits will be used up this year. My plan is to use up charitable carryovers by the time I am eligible to make QCDs in 2024, at which point I expect to stop itemizing. TLH capital loss carryforwards may take a bit longer.
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Absolutely. I've actually bought HRB and found important stuff unimplemented and no updates scheduled until Jan.dodecahedron wrote: ↑Fri Oct 22, 2021 10:57 am Last year showed the folly of trying to do too much end-of-year fine-tuning tax planning, as there was retroactive tax legislation passed in March 2021 affecting 2020 tax returns (involving tax treatment of unemployment benefits and eliminating need to repay excess ACA premium tax credits for 2020.)
Notably, the "If you are on unemployment at any time in 2021 your income for APTC/PTC purposes is considered to be 133% of the poverty level" clause from the ARP is unimplemented. The in-program form appears to show all the boxes, but the software logic isn't in place. The use of overrides when taking both PTC and SE health premium deduction is semi-unpossible due to the wonky potentially circular nature of the PTC+SEH calculation.
This makes me wonder if any or all of the various other provisions from the ARP are implemented, there's a few child credit things, different stimulus payments, student loan things, and so forth.
Plus there seems to be fair odds that we will have another year with early spring retroactive tax changes. Can't fault HRB for that, but for them to be missing things now from //last// year's late arriving tax law changes seems a little behind.

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Are you sure that was a real price and not discounted by a gift card remnant or accumulated digital download credits?
Camelcamelcamel doesn't have it below $39 ever, and I believe that had a $10 gift card bundled to make it effectively $29. $22.50 is lower than I've ever seen.
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Maybe $35 is the best we're going to get this November with inflation. I kinda feel like I should wait for Black Friday though. haha.
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Normally get HRBlock Premium & Business which is a great deal if you have a trust or Corp return to prepare since it gives both the personal and business software. TurboTax makes you buy two programs.
Anyway, does anyone know if I can load the HRBlock program on two computers with the one state they give you. I am not trying to get a second state. Just wondering if it can be downloaded on two computers?

Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
Yes, absolutely. I bought Block last November from Amazon on Black Friday deal and downloaded it onto my computer at the time (a 2014 Macbook.) In December, I decided to replace my Macbook with a brand new 2020 model (and passed on my old Macbook to family member, who is making good use of it!) No problem at all in downloading again to my new Macbook.samsmith wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 8:46 am Normally get HRBlock Premium & Business which is a great deal if you have a trust or Corp return to prepare since it gives both the personal and business software. When I log into my Amazon software library, I can access TT 2013, TT 2014, Block 2014 through 2020. Once I buy 2021 Block, it will go into the archive as well.
The reason I can't access years before 2013 via Amazon is because my dearly beloved late husband always insisted on buying the CD version rather than the downloadable version, but I actually have the ancient CDs for those years stored (somewhere?)
If you buy downloadable tax software from Amazon (either TurboTax or Block, in my experience), your purchases get archived into a permanently accessible software library and you can re-download in the future as many times as you want. (E.g., if you need to amend a prior year return in the future, no problem if you want to do it on a newer computer.)
Re: H&R Block 2021 software offer
A few years ago, I switched from TaxAct On-line to HR Block. The HRB startup asked me to scan the previous year's tax printouts and then verify the personal data. The comparison to the previous year had that scanned data.fyre4ce wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 2:23 am Hopefully this doesn't derail this thread too much, but what's the general opinion on H&R block vs. TurboTax for personal taxes? I try to use Freetaxusa every year but some years I run into forms I need that they don’t carry. The big one being Form 8815, savings bond interest exemption.
In those years, since I’ll know whether I’ll need that form, I’ll buy HR Block Deluxe. Funny thing is I snagged it last year for like $4 more than Freetaxusa’s Deluxe version on an Amazon sale.
