Domestic partner became spouse. Impact to insurance imputed income?

Post by barnaby444 »

I got married in July 2021. My spouse was already on my employer-provided insurance before that as a domestic partner. I already have some year-to-date "imputed income" showing on my pay slips for the time period that she was a domestic partner. Post-marriage imputed income will be zero. Will the imputed income from January-July still be taxable?

I would guess the answer is yes, since the imputed income was already "earned," and I assume my company will report it on my w-2. But the only reason I'm questioning that is that for all other tax purposes I'm aware of, marital status as of December 31 is the only thing that matters for the entire tax year, i.e. I think all of our 2021 income will be taxed as if we were married the entire year (right?).

Thanks.
