I assume yes. I did for my parents return last year.

Thanks for the confirmation. I would have rather had the money sooner, but i guess the interest is a consolidation prize.

IRS Tax Refund - 10 Weeks w/o a Refund?

Post by HoosierMike »

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek]

-Is anyone experiencing long delay in receiving your 2020 federal tax refund?

-I filed electronically on March 14 via TurboTax. A simple return, Married filing Joint with Pension, SSA, and some investment income.

-File was accepted by IRS March 15 with estimated Fed Refund Date of April 5

-As of today, May 26, (72 days later), the IRS "Where is My Refund?" site tells me my return is being processed :(

-I called IRS today and after the lengthy "press this number if you are calling for..." routine received this message: "The IRS is extremely busy and unable to talk to me at this time. Please call back another time."

-It's now been 72 days since IRS received my return. Never had a delay like this one.

Not sure where to go next.

There is a whole thread on this viewtopic.php?f=2&t=342205. Some are getting their refunds fast, others it is taking a while. I'm waiting for my refund and parents refund, and the opaqueness of it is very frustrating indeed.

The lesson appears to be "owe the IRS money and don't care about the lack of refund". Which is generally what I aim for anyway.

I mailed my return 3/1/21. When I check "where's my refund", it doesn't show that my return has been received. Should I mail a 2nd return at this point?

I filed 5/11 I think? Within a week of the deadline, thankfully on the "not in trouble" side of it. :D
5/17 state (CA) refund hit my bank account (direct deposit), 5/19 federal. I'm surprised either was quick, especially the state one.

Filed and accepted 3/1. State took my payment immediately. Fed still says processing. I tried creating an IRS account, but because I moved states in 2020, they could not identify me online. So they say they will send me code by mail, and stated it should arrived in 5-10 business days. It's now been 3 weeks, no letter. I'll give it until 6/1, then I'm contacting my House Rep & Senators. This is ludicrous.

I had a newborn in 2020 (my first). I was fully expecting to get his 3rd stimulus check payment in 2022 when I sent in my 2021 return. However, after submitting my 2020 tax return, it appears the IRS recomputed the stimulus automatically, recognizing there was now a new dependent, and out of nowhere I received $1400 via direct deposit in my account on 5/3.
Filed turbotax on 4/15 still pending as of this writing which is 5/27/2021, exactly 6 weeks.
We have a refund of about $6.5k. This is because we paid estimated taxes thinking that our PPP loan will be taxed as income when passed through our S-Corp prior to clarification by the fed that it won't be taxed. I suspect the $20k PPP untaxed income is holding everything up. Although I don't need the money, I hate the suspense of wondering if I am about to get audited or not. I am confident that my filing is just and have all receipts to prove it. Despite that, I wish I knew what the IRS is up to and if my tax return is under review, will I be audited, or is something else going on.

I e-filed our federal return on May 15. The refund was deposited on May 26.

The refund is $2.61 more than expected. I assume that we'll receive a letter explaining why.

• Return e-filed with Taxslayer (myfreetaxes.com) and accepted: 05/25/2021 [extension]
• Refund approved and expected to be received by 06/16/2021

I attempted to purchase savings bonds but the IRS could not process it because I hadn't paid estimated taxes to the whole dollar, but the return I submitted was rounded. If only the IRS could take the change off the actual refunded amount, and still give me the savings bonds.

New twist on my OP saga. To recap, I filed and had the return accepted via TurboTax on February 20.

Today I received a "5071C" letter, dated June 7, with instructions to verify my identify.

The verification process is now complete, but the confirmation message tells me another 9 weeks?

I could be wrong, but I think the limit was $150,000 AGI including any unemployment received (up to $10,200).

This site (and others that I have seen) says that the unemployment received does not count towards AGI.

Your tax return is still being processed.

A refund date will be provided when available.
Since May 12th, this is all I see. I periodically check the bank as well, since last year my status never changed, but I did get the refund.

-I finally contacted my US Senator, Todd Young and asked for assistance in getting IRS to at least "acknowledge" they are having problems and provide a current estimate for refunding our money.
-Senator Young was on our local CBS tv station explaining how he has found quite a few of us with the same problem as was seeking some resolution from IRS officials.
-Don't know what else to do, but at least our elected reps are aware of the situation.

I paper filed and snail mailed in February 2021.

Received refund on June 9, 2021

$1400 Stimulus for 2020 baby to be deposited on June 16.

IRS website where’s the refund didn’t acknowledge any activity until early June.

So 4 months for anyone who is still waiting on their return.

I spoke with a close family friend who is a CPA and he was like we have some people who also filed for missing stimulus get their returns with in a week. and we have some that filed in early february who still haven't seen it. not extra stimulus. He said its basically all they are dealing with right now.

Filed 4/3/2021 (turbotax e-file). That's the message we still see. We keep checking bank, but hasn't shown up there, either.

Related, we did not get a stimulus check yet this year. It says:
"We're unable to show your payment status because:

Your payment has not yet been processed, or
You're not eligible for a payment."

Here's hoping they work it all out soon.

They're clearly not staffed sufficiently. We also received notice that a former trustee overpaid taxes from a few years back and we need to call them within 30 days to tell them what to do wit the money (send a check or hold for future taxes). Every time we've called, we can't even sit on hold. The message just says they're too busy and to call another time. Odds are, we won't get through in the 30 day window. We're three weeks into that and haven't been able to get anything other than the we're too busy message.

FWIW, my 2020 college grad with a job had a fairly simple return, e-filed in May via HRBlock, got refund 10 days later and he claimed missed stimmies and got #3 by ACH earlier this June.

Still waiting for the promised letter from the June 12th refund. Wow!

Substantial changes will be made by IRS. $10,200 Unemployment exclusion put us under $150,000 AGI changing our refund, changing our Recovery Rebates, and made us eligible for CARES ACT payments, which we weren’t eligible for using 2019 AGI.
Filed NY on paper shortly after Fed and received refund in a few weeks. Have yet to file MA as we owe $519. (Worked in NY, live in MA)
Update:
Still waiting on Federal, still shows as processing.
Mailed MA return in with check for balance owed on 5/14. MA DOR cashed check a week later.
Update: Today, June 12th, pending IRS deposit in checking account for original refund amount plus 3% interest. We were in the situation where Unemployment payments put our AGI at $154,000. IRS was supposed to recalculate our taxes, lowering our AGI to $144,000 triggering a refund of 22% of $10,200 and adjusting our COVID-19 payments. They didn’t do this. Now what? Try to contact them at a number that you can never get a person?

Congrats on at least getting some money back. I would love to see a refund in my account, but based on what I am seeing, I am not expecting it for another 30 days. At least I'm getting 3% on that cash so its not the worst scenario. I just hate the uncertainty behind it all. To the best of my knowledge and capability I filed my taxes following the law. But still, there is nervousness that maybe I made a mistake somewhere and the IRS is taking a deep dive into my tax returns which is why it is taking so long. Odds are that is not the case and they are simply backed up, but I still can't stop me from being concerned. The way I see it, either the return is processed within 2 weeks or it will take 3 months. Looks like I am in the 3 month range. I filed on April 15th which means I shouldn't even think about it till July 15th.

I filed electronically in May and got my refund check about 3 weeks later.

If you filed a paper return, it is probably still waiting to be processed. The UI adjustment won’t be processed until the return is. If you E-filed and the return is missing, I’d call the IRS.

Are you referencing the extra refund due to change in unemployment taxation? Those just started going out recently and they do not expect to be done until some time in the fall. A human being must manually process each one!

I filed electronically in April, got an incorrect refund maybe 3 weeks later based on their calculation of tax owed prior to my estimated payment. So now waiting for $3850 in Ibonds (which was supposed to be $5k). They will probably not send the bonds and send another refund instead I suspect.

This is a semantic thing, but it bugs me so I'll say it. Your tax "return" refers to the paperwork you file with the government (federal Form 1040 plus other forms, etc.). Your tax "refund" refers to the money you receive back if your tax return shows you are owed a refund in taxes. I believe you meant to say, "Federal tax refund".

I paper filed in March also and IRS is still not showing it being processed.
They could at least have a mechanism to show they received the paperwork.

I have a refund due, but chose to carryover to 2021. Does anyone know if it will eventually get credited to my 1st qtr. est. taxes, or does it get credited in the qtr. that the tax filing is processed?

If it is sitting in a large shipping container, they would have no way of knowing. In March, I doubt many people were actually working at the main IRS processing centers. If it is sent with the right POD service the carrier should be able to acknowledge that they delivered it to the IRS.

(I assume you are referring to your refund because you overpaid federal income taxes).

Here's the answer I received from the local volunteer leader of the RSVP tax prep organization (which I also volunteer doing tax returns for free for taxpayers our community). My question to him was "Why hasn't my son received his federal income tax refund, it's been two months since I e-filed his return?" (BTW, my son did receive his NY and SC state refunds, these two state returns were e-filed at the same time as the federal return).

"I have received numerous emails & texts from clients in the same situation.
Every return that includes missing, one or both, stimulus payments are not being processed at this time.
At least 10% of the 800 returns completed at our volunteer site are in this category. I have checked many of them and the same message appears."

>>> "The same message appears" is: Your tax return is still being processed.
