Filled in mid-Feb. Still processing. The only thing out of the ordinary was the plug-in vehicle credit.

I did my Dad's taxes and submitted in early Mar. Refund received in 8 days.

I filed 4 returns (my own and 3 family members) - all of which had a refund - and all were received within two weeks. The largest amount back was about $4K so perhaps it has something to do with the size of you overpayment (perhaps more scrutiny on larger returns but I am just guessing).

Filed on 3/20 and the return is still being processed (i.e., still not approved). Approval has never taken this long, usually happens within a day, so I'm expecting a letter from them. I was looking forward to getting that refund already.

Update: tax preparer told me that I should expect to wait and I'll be lucky if I get it by the end of April. :|

Update: Refund arrived 4/7

For us
• Return e-filed on TurboTax and accepted: 02/20/2021
• Refund received (direct deposit): still being processed as of 3/6/2021 (https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/i ... status.jsp)

This is very new to us - we have not had a refund for many years. :confused In our case, it's about $9,000, due to some miscalculations on estimated taxes (related to realized capital gains).
Mailed paper return on 02/06/21. Refund deposited to my account on 03/26/2021. Took 6 weeks 6 days. Used to get refund in about 3 weeks for paper return in the past.

Our return was accepted on Feb. 12th. We still haven't received our refund, as of today (March 28th). I use the IRS' Check My Refund feature daily and have tried calling multiple times, but I haven't figured out how to speak to a person. Most calls are simply dropped because their lines are too busy.

Our refund amount is a little more than $14,000.

We have also not received our 3rd round of stimulus money. I've tried to use the IRS' tool to check the status of that, but it gives me some general message about us either not being able to receive that stimulus money or the information not being available. Our AGI was lower than the $150,000 max for couples filing jointly. I don't know why we wouldn't qualify. Our assumption is that the stimulus money is being held up because our latest tax return hasn't been processed.

We're more than a little frustrated, especially since there are big ticket items that we have been waiting to purchase, such as a new car, siding for our home and things for our baby that's on the way. I will probably change the way that I pay my wife's estimated quarterly taxes this year in an attempt to lower our refund amount.

Replying to my own post, our return is still being processed as of March 29. I definitely know the exact amount of my expected refund, as I have entered it daily for the past week or so. :(

The variations in refund timing are fascinating. Some got their refunds very fast, and others have been waiting longer than me!

After waiting over a month, a missing portion of refund in paper I bond arrived today unannounced. The delay was probably caused by misprinted barcodes which are heavily crossed out with magic marker.

Professional tax preparer here. I have clients that got their refunds in less than 2 weeks and I have other clients that haven't gotten their refunds and it's been almost 2 months. No rhyme or reason. Can't even get a straight answer from the IRS after being on hold for over an hour. A few of my clients got their refunds a few weeks before the IRS website "Where's My Refund" tool even showed a date. This year is a whole other animal.

4/2 - Federal says still processing. Refund a little over 9k.
4/18 - Still processing :annoyed

Both e-filed with TurboTax.

Somehow I was not even aware of the "Taxpayer Advocate Service," and our household doesn't meet the case criteria it outlines for assistance, but this posting does underscore the breadth of the delays that many taxpayers are currently experiencing.

Filed online (TurboTax) 2/19--IRS accepted immediately

Received IDVerify letter from IRA on 3/21--and successfully verified ID online on same day

Still waiting 4/5--refund a little under $18K

I tried to call the IRS this morning and got a recording saying IRS was too busy to answer my call.

Filed on 2/21, IRS website still says my return is "being processed". I'm getting a large refund (almost all of federal tax) because of living overseas and using FEIE. Unfortunately I can't stop withholding because I always owe a few dollars from investment income, so I can't say that I'm not expecting to owe any tax.

I filed on March 5th (after Turbotax resolved their inherited IRA/backdoor Roth IRA issues). The Fed one is still processing, but CA came back relatively quick (2 weeks).

Us too. Filed in early March. Ours says still processing. I suspect it's because I filed right before ARP became law, and I had a repayment of part of my ACA premium tax credit, and the ARP changed that so that it doesn't have to be repaid. I read something the other day that said *don't* file an amended return, they'll recalculate the tax and send the refund. I'm guessing I'm waiting for them to recalculate my tax.

Received refund February 18, 2021 into my credit union account.

Received $4000 of my $5000 in paper I Savings Bonds February 27, 2021. Still waiting on my last $1000 savings bond as of this writing.
Sent in a letter to Treasury Retail Securities Services in Minneapolis on March 29, 2021 by certified mail. I mentioned that of the three $1000 I bonds I received, they had serial numbers ending in N, N+2, and N+3, so I assumed the lost one was the N+1 one.

Received on April 16, 2021 a replacement $1000 I bond (I suppose; the serial number is the one I expected with the issue date being February 2021, so it could be the original that had fallen behind someone's desk in February and was never mailed :D ).

Filed march 15, still waiting .

We had to paper file. For some reason, e-file with Turbotax was being rejected for not having the AGI correct for 2019, but we triple checked it.

I hope this does not indicate a problem.

Filed ours mid-Feb and still processing. Finally got through the gauntlet to get a live human at the IRS and I’m being told it’s pending because we made our 2020 estimates tax payments under my wife’s SSN and since I am the primary, it throws their entire system into chaos and will take a few more weeks. This was our first year doing estimated tax payments so lesson learned. Just did our 2021 Q1 payment and boy they took that money fast though!

Similar story for me. E-filed with TT early in February, refund showed up as "pending" in my checking account on 4/14, actually available on 4/15. Previous years' returns usually took around 4 weeks. Understandable that there'd be some delays this year.

E-filed Feb 19th. (Mine was in the bunch that IRS delayed processing) Credit union site shows my 'refund' will be deposited tomorrow, April 21. Although it isn't a refund. It's the rest of my 2020 stimulus payment. I never get a refund.

Federal tax refund

Post by 4nursebee »

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek]

It seems like our refund is taking longer this year. I think it normally gets filed electronically from the accountant's office, then takes about 2-3 weeks to deposit in the bank. We are now at five weeks. Should I be worried?

While I wouldn't put too much faith in this, my IRS account has a current notation that "if you've already filed, processing usually takes 21 days (electronic returns) or six weeks (paper returns)." That message has been appearing all month.

For the 2 returns I file (both e-filed via TurboTax, both moderately complex):
Return 1 filed and accepted 3/14/21, refund hit bank 3/22/21
Return 2 filed and accepted 4/10/21, refund not yet issued, account shows return not yet processed.

I filed BIL's taxes April 12, via H&R Block, refund received yesterday, April 21.

Haven't filed our return yet, as we owe a bit.
