Today I received a "5071C" letter, dated June 7, with instructions to verify my identify.

The verification process is now complete, but the confirmation message tells me another 9 weeks?

I got one of those letters too (and filed around the time you did). I got the refund about two weeks after verifying my identity.
Thanks for the info - you have given me some hope, virgingorda. It has now been more than four months for me, after e-filing. :annoyed

I've not had the progress bar for a long time. All I've seen for well over a month is:

"Your tax return is still being processed.

A refund date will be provided when available."

I didn't have the bar throughout the process either. It went directly from no bar to "Refund Approved."

I filed my return using TurboTax in early May and it was immediately accepted (Federal and State). I received my state refund with a few weeks. It's been about 6 weeks and I haven't gotten my federal refund yet (07/01/20201) and my refund status is still processing.

Folks,

This might be a stupid question. Do IRS pay me interest for refunding me the money late? I received my refund but the amount is slightly more than what I should get.

For folks wondering about the status of their returns, and the difficulty of contacting the IRS by phone, the National Taxpayer Advocate released her midyear report to Congress covering this filing season.

The report notes that, at the conclusion of the filing season, the IRS faced a backlog of over 35 million individual and business income tax returns that require manual processing, much larger than usual. The backlog includes about 16.8 million paper tax returns waiting to be processed; about 15.8 million returns suspended during processing that require further review; and about 2.7 million amended returns awaiting processing.

The report also discusses the challenges for taxpayers trying to contact the IRS by phone. For example, for individual taxpayers calling about Form 1040, the IRS has been able to answer only 3% of calls. According to the National Taxpayer Advocate, "the best advice is to be patient and give the IRS time to work through its processing backlog."

The report details many recommendations to help avoid a similar situation in the future. Members of Congress have been informed about this situation, and the report also stresses "the impact of cuts to the IRS's budget over the past decade and the IRS's need for additional funding."

Can confirm. Received a notification about prior year returns from a trust, giving us 30 days to contact them by phone. Their phone lines are so busy, we've never once been afforded the opportunity to sit on hold - the message just says they're slammed and call back later.

We had an extension until June 15 due to the Texas freeze/power outages back in February. Days were ticking down with little communication from the CPA and finally on June 12, she sent us something that got everything right. We e-signed, gave a sigh of relief at finally getting the taxes done, I got up from my chair and walked the block down to check the mail...and there was a check from the IRS for our refund.

Magic?
World's Most Efficient Government Ever?

I wish.

The CPA had filed the first draft in mid May, before she'd even sent it to us to look over and somehow hadn't realized she had even done it, so kept making the changes we needed. So now she is prepping the amended return and we are deciding between a new CPA and DIY next year.

The only thing that I can think of that is holding it up is the large direct rollover (upper seven figures) reported on my return from several retirement funds into my Vanguard IRA. Refund is around $1500.
Update: My refund showed as pending in by bank account yesterday afternoon and this morning "Where's my refund?" showed as "Refund Approved".
Not sure if it helped, but I contacted my Senator's office (Chuck Schumer) a few weeks ago in regards.

For all those that had their refund late and the IRS paid interest on their refunds, did IRS send you a letter on how they calculated their refund check?

Thanks in advance.

To answer Klangfool's question immediately above ^

My past experience (as well as the experience of VITA taxpayers I have assisted) with IRS interest paid on delayed refunds is:

1) no explanatory letter sent by the IRS at the time the refund is issued

BUT

2) the IRS did issue a 1099-INT stating the amount of interest in the month of January following the tax year in which the interest payment was made.

I did not receive a letter either (although I only got my refund 10 days ago :)) but I can see "interest credited to your account" on a line of my Record of Account transcript for 2020:

Mailed my dad's Final return on April 16. (Final returns must be sent snail mail.) Haven't heard a thing since, and the online site has no info. Tried calling a few times and like everyone else, get the message, 'too busy, call back tomorrow.' Oh, well, the heirs can wait longer.

I called the IRS on Friday to try and schedule an appointment with a real person to try and get to the source of the problem on my mother’s account. Since 2017, when my father died, the IRS has flagged my mother’s as being deceased even though she’s very much alive. We’ve resolved it a couple times, but it showed up again when we tried to electronically file her 2020 return in February. So we mailed the return and it has disappeared into a black hole without any indication they even received it yet. We assumed it might be stuck due to her being “dead”.

After 30 minutes on hold, I was connected to a person. After I told our story and asked for an appointment, she offered to look at the account first. After 5 minutes she came back and indicated that she had read the notes on the account and understood the history of the last few years. She said that there was a known problem with the IRS computers that caused Mom to be flagged as deceased and the was a fix for it that she applied. She said that should solve the problem. I thanked her, but also told her that we had heard this all before. Twice. So she went ahead and still made an appointment for us in 2 months in a nearby city just in case we need it.

Then I asked if our delayed 2020 refund was due to the issue with Mom being “deceased”. She said she doubted it. She saw no indication that our return had even been loaded into the IRS computers. She thinks it’s stuck somewhere in their still huge backlog. We are hoping that over the next 2 months they will process it and issue her refund. Assuming they do, we will cancel our September appointment. If we are still in limbo, we will go and see what they can tell us.

Such a mess.

Mailed May 22nd. Refund due. IRS still has to acknowledge. I only hope it will be processed before Nov 1; we have 5k in Savings Bonds coming our way.
Last year we mailed on July 10th. Check was cashed within a couple of weeks, but IRS acknowledged our return only in March.

My brother-in-law died in January of 2020.
My wife mailed his 2020 federal return in early April iirc. I should remember because I did it, but I'm old and retired, etc. The $40 refund check came today. He was an elderly Catholic priest, it was a short return.

Otoh, she's still waiting for the $91 refund for 2019. It seems to be stuck in some obscure office with no phone number according to the regular IRS call center. The customer service folks on the phone can't even call this office. They're as baffled as we are. I did that return, too. Her 30% of the $91 won't even pay my bill. ;)

OK, here's one: I mailed my paper return on 4/15 and the PO's tracking said it was delivered it on 4/21. Not speedy for 1st class mail, but not awful. I got the return receipt postcard in yesterday's (that's 7/22) mail. According to the stamp on the postcard it was delivered 7/15. So, either the PO delivery info is jiggered or the IRS has returns piled up untouched for months. Can't imagine the PO showing that much initiative, so ...

I won't even try to guess when the refund and missed stimulus will crawl in.

Filed online with Turbotax on 4/8. Just got my refund (with interest apparently) today, 8/4. At least the dates have a nice palindromic look :)

Filed my parents (who died last year) final return online via an H&R Block brick and mortar location 4/25. That one is still in limbo, but I guess mine making it through gives me hope it will finally resolve. If they actually get a refund that will result in lawyer having to re-file estate taxes, so I'd like it to finish as it is my last estate related action.

Update

We received a request for more information, but it was really just copies of what we had already provided. The letter from the IRS did not indicate why we had this request but it did say we would get our refund 6-8 weeks after they got the information. We showed the letter to our CPA who said it was part of the IRS identity fraud stuff. Well it has been about 3 months now, no refund, no further communication. We called the number on the letter, got through to a real live human after a while, the human confirmed what was known, would neither confirm or deny that they got the info but said to not resubmit if it had been sent in.

I've just used online contact forms to complain about this and ask for help from the US president, our two state senators, and our US representative.

Any other pointers?

My guess is that the combination of work at home plus being occupied with other non traditional IRS tasks (pandemic payouts and child credit payouts) has left the IRS a little short staffed. BTW this was not a political statement, just reality (as they still have my money).

Oh, just thought of something...since there is a penalty for late filing, will there be a late penalty (by IRS) for inactivity in processing?

The IRS does pay interest on delayed refunds caused by issues on their end.

The current rate is 3%, compounded daily. That is considered taxable income, BTW.

I believe they typically start paying 45 days after the due date, but they changed the rules for 2019, and are calculating all the way back to the 4/15/20 date. I can't track down the rules for 2020 taxes, though, so I'm not sure when that clock started ticking.

Mailed my dad's Final return on April 16 (required to be by snail mail), and haven't even heard crickets. Tried the 'Where's My Refund' site and it shows nothing. I guess the heirs can wait awhile longer. :annoyed

E-filed May 19th and still waiting. It seems you either get the refund within 21 days or else wait 3-4 months. Though some people have been waiting 4+ months and that is concerning. Our refund is big due to an adoption tax credit and is earmarked to pay off the minivan we bought. My frustration is tempered by the fact that we're supposedly earning 3% interest on the refund while the car loan is .9%.

Thanks for all those who have updated when they received their refunds- it's been very helpful and eases the anxiety that there's something wrong with our return. Most likely, it needs a human to sign off on it and it's just in a backlog.

How times have changed. We used the adoption tax credit back in 2005 which gave us a $0 federal tax bill for the year (along with a carry over credit for 2006). Our refund was only held up for a week (waited 3 weeks instead of 2), presumably because it needed to be reviewed by a human.

Our return was filed last Thursday and refund was received today. I thought it might be delayed due to claiming the rebates for both sets of stimulus last year, but it was a surprisingly quick turnaround.
