GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
I merged patriciamgr2's thread into the on-going discussion. The combined thread is in the Personal Finance (Not Investing) forum (insurance).
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Actually have been paying $574.15 for 5MM since 2015. State of Nebraska which probably explains the difference in premium.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
We have a State Farm 2million dollar policy. 2 homes, primary in Fla. 3 cars , 500k limit. $684.
Slightly high, but I’ve been with State Farm 50 years this year, and the auto rates are super low . USAA doesn’t even come close.
I’ve never heard great things about GEICO - cancellations after claims and claims management

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Geico has always been very high on all quotes for me in California
K.I.S.S........so easy to say so difficult to do.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Just got notice of umbrella non-renewal by geico due to two auto claims less than five years. The older claim is 4.5 years ago and I was too stupid to realize I should have not called geico auto for a minor damage to rental vehicle not involving another party which was apparently covered by rental LDW.
Geico said it didn’t matter than they didn’t have to pay out at all, the fact that there were two at-fault claims in 5 years counts toward not meeting geico umbrella underwriting standards.
They did recommend RLI which they act as an agent for. $2 million $655 in NJ (due to one at-fault within last 3 years) otherwise it is $553. I don’t know if Geico raise their own rates this year or not due to non-renewal but last year I was paying $300 for $2 million.

Thanks to the Forum members who have shared your experiences. It's helpful to get some context for GEICO's rate action. I'll keep checking back on this post if anyone else has input. Thanks and best wishes for the Thanksgiving holiday to you & your families.

Another data point. 1MM policy, FL.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
GEICO said they are instituting premium changes nationwide (per a comment to me when an Umbrella department supervisor called me--not a public statement by management). My agent is shopping umbrellas at other providers. I have asked my state insurance department for access to the documents GEICO filed to support the premium increase. In Nevada, I was particularly annoyed that the almost-doubling of the premium was accompanied by what appear to be significant changes in coverage. No one at GEICO is willing to answer questions about what the language changes mean, because "only the lawyers can respond to questions on coverage and the lawyers don't answer hypothetical questions". The entire experience has been bizarre. I purchase umbrella coverage for peace of mind (not because I think I have any real risks) but it's no longer providing much peace of mind!

Wow, that sounds odd. In the past I have found them to be thorough in their explanations.
Perhaps I need an agent to assist. Thank you for the update.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Hmm, I just switched to Geico last week for their cheaper auto+umbrella. I'm in Texas and was quoted $180 for 1M, $333 for 2M and $444 for 3M. Geico uses a partner company (which for my quote was RLI) for their umbrella. Their homeowner's is through yet another partner company (I don't remember the name), so they really only directly provide auto coverage.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
In Nevada, it appears that GEICO writes its own umbrella coverage--but it uses others for homeowners (Traveler's, Stillwater). Your quotes are much better than Nevada's. My $2MM which had been $277 was quoted for renewal at $480 (without any claims or changes in rating factors). This was after a decade of only small percentage increases.

Geico recently raised my umbrella premium to over $10k per year. Yikes!
Yes, it is a 10M policy, and yes, it covers a whole fleet of vehicles and a multitude of real estate properties including some located in the most litigious states, but what the heck?
We switched to State Farm and will save 7k per year. The new premium is 3k for 10M in coverage.

Same experience here with State Farm. Was much less than GEICO, they (GEICO) actually use RLI for their umbrella policies.Archimedes wrote: ↑Wed Dec 23, 2020 3:40 am Geico recently raised my umbrella premium to over $10k per year. Yikes!

Wow - that's a huge savings.
As to the comment about RLI, is the GEICO umbrella policy written in that firm's name? [My HO policy--while placed through GEICO--was written on either Travelers or Stillwater. But the umbrella always seemed to be written as if GEICO was insuring it. I don't know if they reinsured with another firm of course.]
Thanks again to everyone who responded.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Sorry I’m late to this thread.
A couple of years ago, GEICO started raising my rates every six months like clockwork. I called to inquire and got the same “more claims = higher claims for everyone” spiel.
But then I read a very interesting article about companies using “big data” to harvest all kinds of information on consumers. GEICO was one of the firms featured. They were data mining to develop price sensitivity profiles on their insureds. These profiles were used to predict how much GEICO could increase rates before people started leaving for other carriers.
I don’t know if GEICO was doing that to me, but it was enough to convince me to go elsewhere for my insurance. Since then, I’ve comparison shopped my insurance premiums every year.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
This is interesting. I once read that some home remodelers actually based their quotes on their estimates of how much the prospective clients could afford to pay. I had one inexplicably high bathroom remodel quote that was likely explained by this type of business strategy. We just sold the house instead...Horologium wrote: ↑Thu Dec 24, 2020 9:53 pm They were data mining to develop price sensitivity profiles on their insureds. You should be able to. Call an independent insurance agent who represents several insurance carriers and they can do some comparison quotes for you. Your best rates occur when you package several policies together with the same carrier.OnTrack2020 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2020 5:54 am We pay a ridiculous amount for umbrella--over $800 for $1M. I should add we do have young adult/teen drivers. I don't know if we can get it any lower.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
My Geico umbrella for $1m (4 cars and two younger drivers) went from $523 to $499.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
This is known as price optimization. It's done for auto insurance, where the rate calculation is very complex. It can take 300 steps to calculate an auto insurance premium. Rate manuals can be over 1000 pages long.Horologium wrote: ↑Thu Dec 24, 2020 9:53 pm But then I read a very interesting article about companies using “big data” to harvest all kinds of information on consumers. This thread is about umbrella insurance. There is no price optimization for umbrella insurance. Umbrella rates are so simple that you could calculate premiums in your head. GEICO's umbrella rate manual is only 4 pages long.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Many umbrella rates are not apples to apples. Even if rates not broken down in writing like Geico does, you can often ask and get a breakdown. The largest differentiators tend to be -
- Number of houses & vehicles
- Amount and ages of drivers
- Uninsured/Underinsured coverage
The latter of those is particularly significant. Many cheap policies do not include UM coverage at all. You can see this easily in the above mentioned RLI calculator, where for us, a $1mil umbrella is a base of just $163/yr...but to add $1mil of UM coverage is an extra $316. Note - we do not have RLI coverage.
We also do not have geico with a broken down rate showing, but I asked and was able to get a breakdown of our premium last year. Our insurer no longer sells UM umbrella coverage, but we have a grandfathered policy and it was a driver of much of our rate increase last year. Our premium increased by 18% this year despite selling our condo finally, but I haven't yet received a breakdown, my suspicion is UM being the driver once again given the RLI quote above vs. our quote from last year below.
$163.00 - Base premium - 2 autos and 1 home included in base
$ 45.00 - 3rd auto
$201.00 - UM coverage. First 2 vehicles are $77.00 each. Third vehicle is $47.00
$ 30.00 - 2nd owner occupied home policy.
--------------
$439.00 for the term of 12-11-18 to 12-11-19
The best follow-up question for these frequent umbrella premium threads is to inquire if someone has UM coverage in their umbrella...and if it is worth having.

I am a few months late noticing this and responding, but this is a fascinating tip. Do you know of any insurers offhand that offer these policies?talzara wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2020 11:22 am You can take advantage of this if you have a deeply discounted automobile policy from an insurer that offers liability limits of $1-2 million. This can be much cheaper than adding umbrella coverage, because your auto discounts will still apply to the increased limits. When you buy umbrella, you move to a much simpler rate structure that has fewer discounts.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
I should mention in my state, GEICO's umbrella does not cover Uninsured Motorist. I have 1 home, 1 car, no other persons driving & no recent claims (no at-fault accidents ever--I think--under my GEICO auto). I remain mystified by the doubling of the premium after years of smaller increases.
I tried getting higher limits on my GEICO auto & that didn't work. My agent is looking at that strategy when shopping for new coverage, however
Thanks for the valuable information.

Just call around. $1 million limits are not as rare as they used to be. It's usually not advertised, and you won't always find it in the online quoter.brajalle wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 6:33 amI am a few months late noticing this and responding, but this is a fascinating tip. The top four companies have over 50% of the auto insurance market. State Farm and Allstate offer $1 million of primary automobile liability coverage in most states. GEICO and Progressive do not. There are also some regional insurers that offer $1 million limits on auto policies.
$2 million limits are much harder to find.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
GEICO has been writing umbrella at a loss for more than 5 years. This is unusual for GEICO, since its auto insurance line usually makes an underwriting profit. They finally decided that enough was enough, and they're going to make umbrella carry its own weight.patriciamgr2 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 5:24 pm I should mention in my state, GEICO's umbrella does not cover Uninsured Motorist. I get the impression that GEICO umbrella has more adverse selection. State Farm agents seem to do a better job of risk selection. This may be one area where the agent model works better.
GEICO offers up to $500k of liability coverage on primary auto policies. You need an umbrella policy for limits over $500k.patriciamgr2 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 5:24 pm I tried getting higher limits on my GEICO auto & that didn't work. GEICO recently increased the attachment point for its umbrella policies to $500k. This was a good idea, because the attachment point had never been adjusted for inflation. However, the other umbrella insurers did not follow GEICO's lead. GEICO cancelled the increase within a matter of months, and it's back down to $300k.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
That is not universally true. I have $1M auto liability coverage through them. It may vary depending on the location even the customer.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Insurance is regulated state-by-state, so I usually add "in most states" when I write anything about insurance. No matter how universal the rule, there's bound to be an exception. I left out that disclaimer here, and that's what happened.
GEICO offers up to $1 million of bodily injury liability coverage in New York. Property damage liability is still limited to $500k.

33% Cost Increase For Geico Umbrella Policy
[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek]
My Geico $1MM umbrella policy is due for it's annual renewal and I've been informed the price is going up 33% from $250 to $333. I haven't made any claims under the policy and have not had any changes in my circumstances that should affect the rate. I called them and asked about it and all they would tell me is they had a rate change. Any thoughts why it would jump so much?
I have my 2 autos and home bundled with them and the total bundle cost is still cheaper than all other options I've received prices for so I can't really justify switching away. My auto and home policies went up a little but not nearly as much as the umbrella did.

Re: 33% Cost Increase For Geico Umbrella Policy
I also had a huge increase in my Geico umbrella. (52%) I called and they said my state had an increase in rates due to an increase in claims. However, I also had an at fault auto accident, and while accident forgiveness means my auto rate did not increase, my auto rate band is worse, and that is one of the factors in the umbrella premium.jimmyrules712 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 12:29 pm My Geico $1MM umbrella policy is due for it's annual renewal and I've been informed the price is going up 33% from $250 to $333. Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
As noted in my earlier post, I experienced a huge increase in my umbrella premium in Nevada as well. I had no claims under auto, home or umbrella policies and have been a customer for years. I want to point out that, in my case, the Nevada terms and conditions changed substantially at the same time the premium increased--IMO resulting in less coverage in many situations. If you have a GEICO renewal, I suggest you look at any policy changes as well. Good luck to us all in finding better coverage. Regards, Patricia MG-er

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
My wild guess on why premiums are rising: the insurer deliberately mispriced their offering to build a book of business but now is reversing course to lower their overall expense ratio lower than 100, expenses above 100 denotes operating at a loss. Cost of defending is going up and bond yields are declining to the point where investment income isn't helping them. Bottom line: there's no free lunch and either we pay it or shop elsewhere. I'm sure I'm going to get surprised come my own next renewal.

You're talking about the combined ratio, not the "overall expense ratio."Grt2bOutdoors wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 10:49 pm My wild guess on why premiums are rising: the insurer deliberately mispriced their offering to build a book of business but now is reversing course to lower their overall expense ratio lower than 100, expenses above 100 denotes operating at a loss. Unlike other insurers, GEICO never deliberately misprices its policies to build a book of business. GEICO umbrella used to be profitable. However, the countrywide loss and LAE ratio has increased from 40% to 90% over the last 10 years. GEICO targets about 70% for umbrella, so it needs a 30% overall rate increase.
That does not mean everybody is getting a 30% rate increase. In this round of rate increases, GEICO is targeting teenagers, elderly drivers, and households with more people than cars. GEICO is actually decreasing rates slightly on households with more cars than people. Insurance rates are also set state-by-state, so some states are seeing more than 30%, and some states are seeing less than 30%.

Do you, or anyone else, know what the rationale was for the significant changes in policy language that we experienced here in Nevada? TIA for any information
GEICO was using an old umbrella policy in Nevada from the year 2000. It moved to the policy that it's using in the rest of the country.
Insurance companies usually change their policies in response to actual losses. For example, your new GEICO umbrella policy contains an exclusion for hazing. This probably means that an umbrella insurer had to pay a large claim for a hazing incident. It may not even have been GEICO that paid the claim. If any umbrella insurer paid a claim that was out of the ordinary, then other umbrella insurers will take notice.
Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Add me to the hit list, 50% increase on a $2M umbrella in SC from $343 to $515. 2 car/2 drivers. No claims.
