Year-end balance in investments
2001: $0 - Graduated high school.
2002-2011: 0-$20k - Worked a sales job during these years, with no direction in life.
2012: $60k - Quit job to pursue bachelors degree full time. In addition to the $60k, had $50k in cash.
2013: $60k - Full time student
2014: $41k - Full time student. Ended up spending all my cash on living expenses and began dipping into investments
2015: $50k - First professional job after graduating
2016: $52k - Bought a new car
2017: $111k - I watched "The Retirement Gamble" on PBS which featured Jack Bogle. It led me to discover Vanguard index funds, this
forum, and the FIRE community on Reddit.
2018: $120k
2019: $223k - First time maxing 401k and Roth IRA!
2020: $306k
2021: $423k
In 2022 I won't be able to max out 401k contributions, plan it to build up some cash. Currently only have $2k in savings . Near term goal is to hit $500k investments by end of 2024. I'll be 41 years old.

Re: Share your net worth progression
Did you receive a series of large windfalls? Minimal 401(k), HSA, and IRA contributions are not going to add hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to a person's net worth.smalliebigs wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 6:05 pm 33yo/33yo, 2 kids

Dec 2018: $440,000
Dec 2019: $580,000
Dec 2020: $725,000
Dec 2021: $1.2m
I think we're doing OK. For sure can do better on the spending front, but want to keep life/retirement in balance. Dropped 401k to only max match, but still maxing HSA/Roth IRAs. Whatever we have left over each month, we put into taxable.

I'm 45, single, and rent.
2/2018 $244k This was the year I got divorced, so kind of a 'starting point' of sorts.
1/2019 $237k Moving (twice!), not working full time.
1/2020 $275k Still not working full time, going back to school, increase is mostly due to the market
1/2021 $310k Market, stimulus, really low spending rates in 2020
12/31/2021 $359k Started my new job in September, started maxing out the retirement accounts as soon as possible.
Not much compared to others here but I'm pleased with how the decisions I've made in the last few years have worked out, and this year's gains/contributions have put me at nearly 10x salary.

Re: Share your net worth progression
Well I had a low allocation to stocks at that time. Most of my investments were in a stable value fund due to a personal need to raise cash at that time. I also had a high savings rate. Took a $25k loss on stocks in 2008 which I used to offset income and ended up net $48K ahead in 2008 due to savings rate of 50% of take home pay.mikejuss wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 12:48 pmHow were you net positive between 2008-09?dreamrrr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 12:44 pm 2001 $158,563

Single renter, $90k/yr, early 30's.
Last year around this time I was astonished to hit the $500k mark, making my net worth equivalent to my total income. I'm closing out this year just north of $650k NW. Thank you to the Bogleheads forum - I was very lucky to find this community in my mid-20's. Happy New Year everyone!

Our earnings have fluctuated widely based on career choices, but throughout we've aimed to save 50%+ and have stayed the course with a simple 3 fund portfolio. ~90% equities throughout, with a plan to lower it over time.
2013: ~$20k (started working)
2014: ~$80k
2015: ~$190k
2016: ~$300k
2017: ~$490k
2018: ~$550k
2019: ~$780k
2020 (YTD): ~$1M
About $220K of the $1M come from market returns. A bunch of it is in tax deferred accounts, so net worth after subtracting deferred taxes and capital gains is lower.
2121: $1.85M

I only went to max match 401k late in 2021.mikejuss wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 10:54 amDid you receive a series of large windfalls? I'm the only one working, salary a measly $120,000 in Midwest
I did get a small "windfall" of sorts, in that my parents transferred their rental properties to me in 2021.

Single, no kids
Salary ~115k. Big incomes (200k+) in 18 and 19 really helped boost me up. Spent time overseas to get it; those salaries aren't sustainable in my career field. Roughly 200k is home equity.
2017 - 30 - 240k (est)

2021 - 34 - 749k
2022 - 35 - 927k
Hope to cross a million this year... stretch goal of 1.1, though its completely dependent on the market lol
Happy New Year to all the bogleheads

2021: 1.28M | 1.65M
Strong annual raises since 2016 and a promotion to start 2021 has helped quite a bit, driving more of our 42% post-tax savings rate than any sort of frugal habits. Drive two 2013 vehicles and in the same house we bought in 2011 on much lower incomes (though I'm itching to move bigger). My best estimate has us getting to $2m liquid net worth by the end 2025, which can be accelerated either by a promotion or continued strong market performance and assumes we don't move.

2019 - $1.24 MM - hit the big 4-0 this year (age) - just like most others, the market helped a lot, as did two separate 50% ESPP profit trades
2020 - $1.64 MM - kind of hard to believe I'm up so much despite this chaotic catastrophic year but so far the market has weathered it.. had fantastic ESPP luck again too
2021 - $2.14 MM - nice housing bump, big portfolio gains, major bonus, continued to save a lot by not doing much of anything during the plague!

Clearly an equity position in a company with a value that exploded. Much of that is just right time, right place — unless a founder or something. There are plenty of companies outside of tech that have such performance too.

I got lucky with my timing of a 401(k) rollover. Was out of the market from 2/14 to 3/1 so I missed the start of the crash. Rebounded nicely by the end of 2020 to finish with my best financial year to date.
Finished up my CPA exams this year which provided a small bump in pay. Continue to max out my 401(k), roth IRA, HSA and contribute about $1,000 per month to a taxable account. Hopefully will hit $500,000 by the end of 2023. Renting so no home equity and single.
