Healthy mail-order gift food.

Post by gd »

Years ago I slid into sending gift food at Christmas, on the theory that I'm not saddling people with permanent unwanted junk that doesn't fit their style. Fancy meat, bread, cheesecakes more expensive per weight than gold, stuff like that-- hopefully things they wouldn't normally buy. But one of my recipients has gone all heart-healthy, and I'm realizing most of the mountain of catalogs I receive contain mostly health bombs. Fruit is a possibility, but even the tyranny of Christmas gifts can't overcome the outrageousness of paying $3-$6 for a pear that they can buy at the local upscale supermarket-- it'd have to be something unusual. Any suggestions for distinctive, healthy consumable mail-order gifts?

Edible arrangement has fruit shaped like a bouquet flowers. Also pricy, but at least unique.

My Mom loves her Harry & David boxes (literally, she loves the fruit and also saves the boxes; she uses them for filing important papers). We buy her the year each Christmas and she receives a box each month. They allow you to delete certain types of fruits if inappropriate or undesired. I can't say it's better or cheaper than Whole Foods Market, but it works great as a gift that keeps on giving year 'round.

Salmon, other fish, blueberries, healthy oils, even salmon sausage.....http://www.vitalchoice.com/shop/pc/home.asp

You didn't mention a price range, but if this fits the bill, it is a very nice assortment. http://www.vitalchoice.com/shop/pc/view ... tegory=268

I have had great experiences with all these companies. Not exactly like Harry and David, but I have put together nice packages from all these places in the past.

Nuts Online
Green Light Jerky
Bob's Red Mill
Lundberg Rice

Penzey's Spices. Way better than supermarket spices. The Vietnamese Cinnamon is to die for. :)

Also, tea.

Thanks for the suggestions, some good ideas. But I guess Pfaelzer needn't be worrying about competition from gourmet tofu companies quite yet.

Every year for the last 10, I get relatives a gift box of nuts and dried fruit from here:

Very reasonable, also.

You might want to try the granola from this place:

Also supports a cause - of course whether you want to order from them might depend upon if you agree with the cause; historically they are known for leading desegregation efforts, so nothing to disagree with there.

http://www.zingermans.com mail order gifts can include stuff like fancy olive oils, vinegars, teas, coffees, candied chestnuts, etc., etc.. Its caraway rye bread recently won some best in America award--very good but would be "day-old" I guess if mail-ordered. Z sells sell unusual ingredients to chefs all over the US and beyond! Pricey, but Z aims to sell the best in every category.

http://www.costco.com sells gift boxes, e.g., Kasilof Smoked Sockeye 16 oz. Salmon Fillet Gift Box, All Natural, Alder-smoked, $27.99. (I haven't tried Costco's smoked salmon, but we once bought a $200 box of large crab legs from Costco for an easy, but memorable family get-together.)

I recommend Nutiva Hemp Protein Powder. Its 3lbs for about $29.00 on Amazon. I'm pre-diabetic so I have had to make drastic changes in my diet. This protein powder is ideal for smoothies, safe for all kinds of food allergies and has a very subtle flavor all while being full of nutrients and fiber. These Hemp smoothies have taken the place of my beloved bacon, sausage and eggs for breakfast. BTW , there are none of the "effects" you might expect of Hemp.
