Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
Fellow BHs,
I already searched for past posts and did not find anything recent (last post I found was from 2009, assuming things have changed since then). What are your favorite restaurants to eat in NOLA.
Best,
Tom.

We’ve always enjoyed breakfast at Restaurant Stanley by Jackson Square. If going soon check on proof of vaccination requirement for Orleans parish (found out on this requirement on a recent December visit).
Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
I had a house in New Orleans for 20 years, mainly for access to the restaurants. I have no idea how they are dealing with Covid, which could certainly affect ambience and staffing.
Our favorites:
Brigtsen's, fabulous food in typical neighborhood restaurant setting. Charming.
Clancy's, another Uptown neighborhood setting for great food. Virtually a club for locals.
Galatoire's. The best of the classic old French Quarter bistros. No reservations for downstairs, which you will want, but the wait is not long.
Herbsaint, close to downtown. Generally regarded as one of New Orleans's 5 best.
Cochon, best Cajun food. Excellent for lunch. Try the fried oyster BLT for lunch.
Mr. B's in French Quarter across from Monteleone Hotel.
Commander's Palace in Garden District. Great dining experience.
Bon Apetit!

Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
I worked for Mobil and we were transferred to New Orleans when Exxon bought Mobil in 2000 - we were there for about 3 years.
Since then, ms gamboolgal and I have enjoyed going to the French Quarter and staying in some of the old historic Bed and Breakfast places located in the French Quarter for afew days several times over the years.
When walking the French Quarter - Cafe Maspero's - we like to stop in for lunch or early afternoon and get the Fried Calamari and a Shrimp Sandwich / Poboy.
Southern Pecan for Pralines and Sweets
For months with R's in them we will go for a couple dozen Raw Oysters and a Shrimp or Oyster Poboy - many good choices, e.g., Royal House Oyster Bar, Acme Oyster House, Felix's and Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar
For a fancier dinner - Commanders Palace, Bayona, Court of Two Sisters, and Galatoire's are all good - many others....
Also recommend the D-Day Museum if you have time. ms gamboolgals father was in the 101st all the way thru WW2 - thus we have been to the museum afew times.
I like to play the pokerssszzzz.... do recommend playing at Harrahs if you like to play.

Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
My two favorite restaurants in New Orleans are:
Nola, 534 St. Louis St. (Emeril Lagasse)
Mother’s, 401 Poydras St. (at Tchopitoulos)
Nola is more upscale and features seats at a chef bar which are worth trying to get. You get to see food going out that is explained by cooks/chefs making it. So don’t do what I did and take those seats at opening - you’re kind of forced to order before you get to see anything. Andouille crusted shrimp, peach barbecue chicken and lots of wine were hits.
Mother’s is a casual po-boy classic. Long long lines (at least in the “before times.” Whatever you choose make sure you get it with “debris” on it. And say “DAY-bree.” Enjoy!

Shaya on Magazine St was our favorite when we were there over Christmas. It's Mediterranean with a southern influence.

Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
I've seen lots of good ones already. I'll add or second some of mine.
Cafe Beignet on Royal Street is much better than the more famous Cafe du Monde
Royal House Oyster Bar is delicious.
Commander's Palace and Galatoire's (don't forget your jacket!) have their reputation for a reason.
Brennan's is great, too (they invented Bananas Foster, which is a favorite of mine)
Shaya is supposed to be great (a friend used to be a garde manger chef there).
And the classic roast beef debris po'boy at Mother's
New Orleans is a great food city. Enjoy the trip!

Central Grocery for a muffuletta. It's a third-generation deli & market sort of place.
Although I see Ida shut them down for the time being while they rebuild. They are still shipping.

Most of these recommendations are the antithesis of Bogleheads.
My recommendation is Dat Dog!

Second the Commander’s Palace recommendation. Try the turtle soup.
Also, Brennan’s, as well as Beachbum Barry’s.
Check out the New Orleans Museum of Art if you get a chance.

Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
They had a nice beignet brunch at an internal outdoor courtyard at the Ritz Carlton 15 years ago. And of course there’s Cafe du monde by the waterfront. Ok a little touristy.. I’m sad I never made it back to the amazing gulf coast.
Check out the online NOLA dictionaries (humor) before you go.
New Orleans is, of course, pronounced nawlins.

Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
As someone who lives within an hour or so of New Orleans and goes very frequently, it is much harder to find bad food than it is exceptional food. It’s hard to go wrong ( unless you eat at some super touristy spots along Decatur in the French quarter)

Domenica on Baronne St (located in The Roosevelt Hotel). Then Snake and Jakes for a drink later that night.
Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
Lot of solid suggestions so far. I have a mild obsession with po boys. Killer po boys in the back of Erin Rose bar is my favorite. I don’t think I’ve ever been to town without stopping.

Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
Surprised not to see Willie Mae’s Scotch House on here. Some of the best fried chicken I have had in my life. Bacchanal Fine Wine and Spirits is a great spot, but more for the ambiance vs food. La Petite Grocery and Cochon are solid spots as well.
Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
I lived in NOLA for years...so the places I like to frequent with no visitors/festivals in town (at least in the warehouse district/downtown/quarter):
Cafe Du Monde
Felix's
Ryan's Irish Pub
Central Grocery
The Court of Two Sisters
Howlin' Wolf
Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar
Urban South Brewery
Mothers
Port of Call
Jean Lafitte's Pirate Bar
Agree on Visiting:
WWII Museum
NOMA

If you go to Commander's Palace, try the Shrimp & Tasso Hennican appetizer. For dessert, the Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé is not to be missed.
Re: Your favorite restaurants in New Orleans?
Shaya is legit great. You would probably not expect fantastic Israeli food in New Orleans, but nevertheless..
