I recommend folks avoid posting the current word of the day. Not everyone has had a chance to play today yet.

Yes, the app give a great way to share your status/how you did without any chance of spoilers. Need to do that. Don't ruin it for others.

I am addicted, and it the addiction is quickly flowing through my social circle.

The one a day approach like the (real) NYT Crossword is a great way to balance addiction vs. time-wasting :beer

The best part for me is that I appear to be pretty decent at this game and can keep pace with my wife who has been killing me at Bananagrams, Scrabble and just about any other word-based game for 30 years!

Hey, the quotes and comments are what revealed a spoiler. I just used a word in a post that someone would have to assume and try.

As a peace offering and for the person who said they wished they could play previous ones, I give you the below link to Wheeldle, AKA Unlimited Wordle:

The great thing about Wordle is that you can only play once per day. You can't end up losing a half hour playing word after word after word, unless you purposely seek out one of the clones that allow unrestricted play.

I am. Not doing too great. I've never been that great at anagrams, I'm not bad at filling in missing letters if the others are in the right places.

My tentative strategy is DEATH, IRONS, MULCT as the first three words, thereby hitting the fourteen most common letters, and then probing for letter position. But it's not working particularly well.

As a side note, it's fascinating and heartbreaking to watch how it is working out, between the creators of the no-cost game, and the smartypants saying that "WORDLE" isn't copyrighted or trademarked and the gameplay probably isn't protectable, so lets create iOS and Android knockoffs and make a buck.

Interesting. So you always start with those 2 even if you get a green or yellow? I can see how that would be a good idea.

My first word is SPENT. Now I need to think of a complementary second word.

I apologize, but I would say the people that quoted me with additional exposition ruined it. By tomorrow, my comment on what's expected to be a long-running thread (if it isn't locked for some reason) would have been entirely meaningless. I didn't say, "today's answer is. . ." But sorry.

I am curious if WORDLE adjusts to geographic regions. For example, favor in a legitimate word in the U.S. but in the U.K. favour is too long.

My point is that in the U.S., favor is a legitimate word, but for someone in the U.K., it does not make sense because they use favour. And so I'm curious if people around the world get the same daily word and whether everybody must assume American spelling.

several days ago the word used a letter twice. It shows up as green if it is one of those correct places, there is no other indication that a letter is used twice. you just have to consider that it is a possibility.

I downloaded a word list (not Wordle's exact limited word list, nor a complete scrabble word list, but somewhere in the middle) and scored every word on how popular the letters in it are, not just based on overall letter frequency, but also weighted for letter placement. The outcome of this exercise is that the best single word, the word that is the most similar to all words, is LATER. However, there isn't a great second word to pair with it that has no letter overlap. As a result, I start every game with:

TONES, then
DAIRY, and if I'm still at a loss,
CLUMP

I'm hoping someone will come out with a French version. But then, will accented letters -- especially vowels -- be different letters?
