Third car?
Third car?
Planning to buy a third car around January 2022 for low mileage usage (6 miles per day). Options are to buy brand new 2022 Touring Mazda CX5 or buy a used SUV in the range of $20K. Not able to decide which way to go. Any suggestions/guidance?
Note: Currently owns low mileage 2014 Honda CRV and 2015 Rav4 both purchased new.

6 miles a day? Ride a bike.
Re: Third car?
What's the point of having a 3rd car? Why are these the only two choices?retire#10 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 12:29 am Planning to buy a third car around January 2022 for low mileage usage (6 miles per day). Is this just a fun way to blow some dough? Or is there some other goal you are attempting to achieve?
This isn't just my wallet. It's an organizer, a memory and an old friend.
Re: Third car?
6 miles a day, if you truly need a third, why not consider an older used veh. for much less $. There has to be something in your neck of the woods decent and reliable for $7-8k. I agree not enough info for full picture answer.

Re: Third car?
In ten years, if you use it 7 days per week, you'll have about 21,000 miles on it. The cost per mile will be extremely high, so the usage of this third vehicle must be of some importance.

I figure the odds be fifty-fifty I just might have something to say. FZ
Re: Third car?
+1, that's 2,000 miles a year. I'd be looking for a vehicle through 2 lease cycles (around 6 years old, 72K miles), that has maintenance proven, which it likely will from the lease compliance, prechecked by a mechanic. This is the sweet spot for this, IMHO.
Re: Third car?
Why a third SUV, rather than an actual car, as the title says?
Re: Third car?
I would search the CarMax(or equivalent) website for the $20K used SUV and see what you like.retire#10 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 12:29 am Planning to buy a third car around January 2022 for low mileage usage (6 miles per day). I looked up a Toyota 4Runner...my choice...and they were priced around $30K.
Also search for the Mazda; call around and search around to check availability.
Once your research is done, sleep on it until a choice becomes evident.
When I go through this process, I rely on "internal voices" and gut feelings. Many times the voices tell me to bail. Sometimes I'll wake up, and the choice is clear; then I'll act or bail. I usually put off any decisions until I get this "clear choice" feeling.
Re: Third car?
It would have helped if you had said what application you have now and in the future for this new low-mileage car, and explained why the only new option is one specific model and trim level vs. seemingly any variety of used SUV alternative.retire#10 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 12:29 am Planning to buy a third car around January 2022 for low mileage usage (6 miles per day). Re: Third car?
I would guess that these days the majority of people use "SUV" and "car" interchangeably, since they have become more or less the default car model (although I've never owned one.) Previously it seemed more common to refer to their SUV(s) as "truck(s)", but that seems to be declining as many people have moved away from the Suburban-type models. Similarly "CUV" has never seemed to catch on, and those seem to fall into the "car" or "SUV" camp.
Re: Third car?
OP, your other post indicates a DD is off to college. Will one of the cars (suv, cuv...oh heck, vehicles). be for her use?

Why don’t you look for a lease swap. You might find some unfavorable to most but not you options — say someone with a 10,000 mile a year allowance with 20k miles on the car 1 year in and get an absolutely sweetheart deal.
Here’s an example:
https://www.leasetrader.com/listing/201 ... ing-347539
$40/mo but he’s at the mileage limit with 13 months remaining. If you drive 6 miles a day 5 days/wk and the mileage overage charge is $0.25/mile you’re looking at a $420 in mileage overage…divided over 13 months plus the $40/mo lease — $73/mo total.
