Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
I guess you will be excluded from this if you don't like rock music, or if you are less than about 50 years old. Anyway, please list five rock bands/performers that you liked a lot at least 40 years ago that you still like to listen to now.
Some of mine:
Paul Simon including Simon and Garfunkel (Is this rock?)
Steely Dan
Led Zeppelin
The Moody Blues
Jimi Hendrix (Although not live recordings. Most of those are poor quality, sloppy, etc.)

Re: Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
I saw them open up for "Yes It Is!" on their "If You Reframe the Original Post as a Request for Recommendations" tour.
My five, um recommendations...
- Steely Dan. Agree with the OP there. Timeless.
- ELO, from "New World Record" up to at least "Discovery". A lot of the earlier prog-rock stuff hasn't aged as well. Maybe you could also argue against the more disco-y stuff on Discovery, but I'm just going to ignore you if you do.
- Bob Seger, particularly those first few Silver Bullet Band records:"Night Moves", "Stranger in Town", and "Against the Wind".
- Styx, during the period when both Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung were both in the band. A few overly-ambitious clinkers in there that don't hold up well, but the rest make up for it.
- Doobie Brothers. 'nuff said
Fleetwood Mac should be on the list if only for "Rumours", which still sounds like it could've come out yesterday. But I can't vouch enough for their whole (very large/diverse) catalog to make a blanket recommendation for the group.

Why not? Perhaps I’ll listen to someone listed. That’s an action, as much as buying a book based on a BH recommendation. Or a coffee bean. Or an AC. You get the idea.
I get the FI part but not the RE part of FIRE.

Re: Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
I was staying in the realm of "classic" (i.e. '70s) rock there, since there's more of a test of time to stand for them (and the OP did say "at least 40 years ago")
But hey, if we want to go '80s and '90s rock, how about:
- The Lemonheads
- The Smithereens
- Matthew Sweet
- Gin Blossoms
- Crowded House (arguably more pop than rock, but still, that stuff holds up!)

And none are oldies acts. Other than the late Leonard Cohen they continue to release new material that they play in concert (or did so pre-pandemic), especially the Nobel laureate, Mr. Dylan.

1st and always 1st: Metallica
2nd: Alice in Chains
3rd: Pink Floyd
4th: Creedence Clearwater Revival
5th: Ramones
not ranked but just way more influential than people give them credit for: The Beach Boys (and the Ramones, really)
Here is a great party/ice breaker question: Who would you say are the "American Beatles"?
Beach Boys or Ramones would be mine, just on musical influence. I may would say CCR to just piss people off.

Re: Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
That's a toughie. I'll also mention The Byrds for their jangly sound, similar to The Beatles' middle era output (Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver)
Re: Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
Saw the Eagles about 4 years ago in Baltimore (just before Glenn Frey died). They played for about 3.5 hours and it was the best concert I have ever seen. I'll add that I've never been a huge concert-goer but I've seen most of the big rock acts from that era (Stones, McCartney and Wings, Springsteen, etc.).

Beastie Boys. 2021 marks 40 years since their debut. Geez I feel old.
Re: Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
Agree, and David Byrne's American Utopia will be back on Broadway starting September 17.
I've seen quite a few performers, some of whom are still performing, like the Moody Blues. I believe Paul McCartney has stood the test of time as well, if not better, than anyone.

Honest question: is this poll thread connected to our life as a consumer? Just trying to understand.
Would all "What is the best X" threads thus be considered on-topic?

Re: Rock Bands/performers that Have Stood the Test of Time
Well, I just turned 30, but this is still most of my favorite music so I'll chime in, lol. I don't really have any comment on standing the test of time in recorded format, because that's purely subjective and up to what anyone likes, so I'm sure you can find fans of relatively unknown bands from forever ago that swear by their music.
When it comes to live performing though, I have to give a nod to Styx. I'm a fan of pretty much everything Styx has ever put out, and their greatest hits compilation is one of my most-played CD sets from back when I still used to buy CDs. A few years back, my wife and I were in Vegas and I just happened to notice Groupon was selling discounted tickets for Styx at The Venetian for like $20. I thought, "Hey, these guys are old, but what the heck, I like the music, let's go." It was easily one of the best live performances I've ever seen. The production and sound quality of the show was great, and the band was still extremely talented and seemingly youthful despite their age, and they had several great solos and improvised jams outside of the main set list. At one point, James Young was talking about how the band actually originated in the 60s under a different name. Granted, the lineup is quite different now than back then, but that's when it hit me just how much longevity this band has. I know of several other bands from around that time, but they almost all look and sound distinctly old and past their prime now and perform with less regularity. While I can't really comment on Styx in their prime due to my age, I will say that show I went to was just as good as any, and really quite impressive given their age. Even though some of the members are newer like Lawrence Gowan, he played a killer solo rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that would have made Freddie Mercury proud, and he's not like a particularly young guy or anything. I think for their ages, the current members of Styx have arguably the greatest longevity of any of the famous bands on mainstream rock radio.
The other concert I went to that impressed me some years ago was Def Leppard. Granted, they're not nearly as old as Styx, but their sound quality on stage was second to none. They sounded tighter live than most recorded music. That was the concert that really convinced me how important proper sound engineering is to a great concert. It was a co-headlined tour with Poison, and I was actually more excited for Poison than Def Leppard, and by the end of it, there was no comparison, Poison was a lame nostalgia act and Def Leppard made hard rock look and sound easy. Poison's audio was way too loud and distorted for the venue, plus they were pretty loosey-goosey with their musicianship. Def Leppard was absolute perfection probably some 25 years past what would be considered their prime.
The one that makes me sad but I'll give an honorable mention is Meatloaf. I saw him around 2008-2009 I want to say, can't remember exactly, but it was around the time I graduated from high school. He was already pretty old, heavy, and immobile, but man his voice was still amazing then. I haven't seen him since so it's hard to comment, but my understanding is his health quickly deteriorated shortly after that, and his voice was not nearly as good in subsequent live shows. I guess he hasn't stood the test of time for the sake of this thread, but I'm glad I got to see him while he was still able to perform well. To be honest, I care more for Jim Steinman's songwriting than Meatloaf himself, but my dad used to blast the Bat out of Hell cassette tapes in the car when I was growing up, so those are very nostalgic songs for me.
