I think "Godless" is the only one not on other lists. I really wanted to like "Cowboys and Aliens", but it was awful.

I suppose that's partly how we define western and which elements of the genre. It doesn't take place west of the Mississippi nor in the 19th century, so in that context, it isn't a western. But it hits a lot of the relevant beats you'd expect from a western.JoMoney wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 11:56 pmJustified was fantastic. Not sure I would classify as a 'western'... The Leone 5, and throw in Once Upon a Time in America to complete the two trilogies.
The Big Gundown, a spaghetti western starring Lee Van Cleef, that is relatively unknown. Sergio Donato, who did the screenplay for Leone's "Duck You Sucker" (nestled between Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America, a fantastic film), also wrote this one.
Western is a wide open genre. John Carpenter's Halloween and Escape from New York are Westerns in plot, and Carpenter himself describes them as Westerns.

I can't either. Really left an impact on me. I've read the book many times. My only gripe with the movie is they changed the ending. I don't know why they did that, book ending did such a better job at conveying a sense a loss.

Lonely are the Brave - Kirk Douglas' favorite film role and Kirk made a lot of westerns.
One-Eyed Jacks - A brooding intense western about duplicity and revenge. Martin Scorsese calls it arguable the best western ever made. A one of a kind film and the only film directed by Marlon Brando. "You may be a One-Eyed Jack around here, but I've seen the other side of your face." I'm pretty sure some on my list have already been named. I admit I'm not a connoisseur of classic Western movies and tend toward lighter fare, but I do have a soft spot for one or two classic films.
In no particular order:
True Grit
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
High Plains Drifter
Quigley Down Under
The Frisco Kid (IMHO the best work Gene Wilder ever did)
Support Your Local Gunfighter
Support Your Local Sheriff
Maverick - for Jodie Foster and the soundtrack
The Over-The-Hill Gang (1969 TV movie)
Shanghai Noon
I was going to give a very specific, limited honorable mention for the 2013 movie "The Lone Ranger" (yes, the Johnny Depp movie), solely for what I consider to be a very well-done orchestration of "The William Tell Overture". But I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The rest of the movie is such garbage.

Hell on Wheels TV series. A story about building the Union Pacific railroad. Hell on wheels is the name of the last town where railroad construction is going on. It's just a fabulous show.

Wow. I needed this thread to remind me what a GREAT genre Westerns were (are).
I absolutely LOVED Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns:
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly [one of the greatest casts of all time: Clint (the Man with No Name), Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes), and Eli Wallach (Tuco) AND one of the greatest scenes/music]
and my all time fav -- Once Upon a Time in the West
Leone also did Once Upon a Time in America which was supposedly fantastic until Warner Brothers screwed it up.
There were a lot of other "spaghetti westerns" that were not directed by Leone, but he was definitely the genius.

Don't have much to add as lots and lots of great movies have been listed. Not sure if I saw Shenandoah mentioned anywhere. One of my favorite Jimmy Stewart movies. I would consider it in the western genre.
My personal favorites are The Searchers, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and Once Upon a Time in the West.

Red Rock West.

Re: Favorite Westerns - Name 10
One of my favorites I haven't seen mentioned is The Sons of Katie Elder. John Wayne, Dean Martin, a young Dennis Hopper and a great villain played by George Kennedy.
Speaking of George Kennedy...can you call Cool Hand Luke a Western? Probably not.
What about Last Man Standing with Bruce WIllis and Christopher Walken.
Beyond those, I'm in line with most of the others here...Butch & Sundance, Unforgiven, Tombstone, Once Upon a Time in the West, GB&U, Clint Eastwood's others, the new True Grit, Magnificent Seven.

I'm a sucker for any western with Jimmy Stewart in it, from "Liberty Valance" to "Destry Rides Again".
Controversial opinion time: The short-lived TV show "Firefly", along with the follow-up move "Serenity" (which basically acts a rushed season finale of the TV show) is one of the best modern westerns around, despite not actually taking place in the American West.

Re: Favorite Westerns - Name 10
YES! Absolutely.
Also, for all those fans of Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin in westerns, you MUST see
- Paint Your Wagon.
Interesting how many of us have a similar list:
- The Shootist (yes, Bacall & Wayne, but also Ron Howard as The Kid)
- Unforgiven (Gene Hackman is mesmerizing).
- 3:10 to Yuma (Russell Crowe and Christian Bale)
- True Grit (I prefer the Coens' updated version, but the original is solid).
- Tombstone (Kurt Russell, and Val Kilmer in his best performance ever, IMO)
- High Noon (Sucker for Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly)
- Hondo - I was a big Louis L'Amour reader as a kid, and loved the Sackett series. Hondo was L'Amour's first adaptation, I think.
- Serenity (Joss Whedon, *totally* a western. It just happens to take place in the future, on a spaceship).
Also love Fistful of Dollars, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, Jeremiah Johnson, Nevada Smith.
+10,000 to AMC's Hell on Wheels series - Anson Mount was excellent in the lead, and the supporting cast was outstanding.
