Walkers
Walkers
Hi everyone, I moved to Florida in December and have been walking 5-10 miles a day. Basically to escape work from home several times a day and get some sun. I have noticed knee pain the last few weeks . I haven’t been squatting or lunges or anything. I’m just wondering if others who walk a lot have dealt with similar pain. I would not feel comfortable running with this feeling. Curious if it’s to much use or perhaps something more like an arthritis. I’m 39. Thanks for the input.

Are you walking on concrete? That is a lot of walking. May be take every third day off.FRT15 wrote: ↑Fri May 07, 2021 6:54 pm Hi everyone, I moved to Florida in December and have been walking 5-10 miles a day. I thought this topic was going to be about my mom's Rollator.
5-10 miles per day is a lot of walking. Some will be fine, others will get some pain.
First thing I'd do is change your shoes especially if the pain was not there when the shoes were newer or if pain started after buying new shoes. You might need to replace the shoes every 500-750 miles even if you are not running. We like Hoka One One but your feet will be different than ours. A local running store will be able to help fit you, but will probably also try to sell you low cost orthotics which may or may not be helpful.
I'd also try one or two rest days (or lower mileage) per week and see if that helps.
I walk on the asphalt as much as possible not concrete.

Best suggestion is to speak with your physician. She or he can either make suggestions for treatment or refer you to a specialist.FRT15 wrote: ↑Fri May 07, 2021 6:54 pm Hi everyone, I moved to Florida in December and have been walking 5-10 miles a day. Go to a local shoe store. Get a gait analysis, buy the shoes they suggest.

Medical advice is not permissible on the forum. You probably need to see a health care provider.

Thanks for the thoughts. It is mainly concrete sidewalks and streets and some beach. Good suggestions with the light day and special shoes.

Re: Walkers
If your shoes have more than 500 miles on them, get new shoes. Shoes wear out, even if it doesn’t look like they are. If the condition persists, see a doctor. That’s pretty much all anyone here can say without violating forum rules.
Re: Walkers
You're spending a lot of time walking - when are you working? Realistically in most places you can only walk a couple of miles an hour. Yes, I know, Bogleheads walk ten miles every day while working at the same time - before breakfast, of course - but for everybody else, walking that far takes hours and hours and requires paying some attention to where you are and where you're going.
