Please suggest a docuseries to watch

Post by BogleMelon »

I became interested lately in "crime-solving / living inside the prison" documentaries. What are good docuseries on Netflix or Amazon Prime to watch?

Interesting show, but also depressing.

I just started that. Feels like 4 episodes that could have been cut to one. There was another recent crime docu that was heavily padded, though its name escapes me.

The John Wayne Gacy one on Peacock is great. Maybe you can sign up for a free month, or something. But my wife, hitherto ignorant of him, made me move my hitherto "cute" Gacy Seven Dwarves artwork from outside her bathroom.

A fascinating documentary film about high-priced fake art at a well-regarded New York gallery:

Made You Look

And if you are "car guy/gal" like me, I recommend "Formula 1 - Drive To Survive" on Netflix. 3 seasons of intense, fun racing bliss.

"Making a murderer" on Netflix if you are the one person that has not watched it yet.

"The serpent" - its not a doc, but based on a true story on Netflix.

"I'll be gone in the dark" - GSK doc on HBO.

If you have not heard the "serial" podcast, check that out too for free.

"Evil genius" on Netflix.

"Murder among the mormons" on netflix.

"The devil next door" on netflix.

"The confession killer" on netflix.

"Unabomber" on netflix.

“College Behind Bars” on Netflix

Not a crime/prison doc, but “Soviet Storm: WW2 in the East” on Amazon Prime was really good, with moments of self-aggrandizing (it was made in Russia), though not very biased overall.

Manhunt | Unabomber on Netflix

May not technically qualify as a docuseries, but close enough.
96% Rotten Tomatoes & 8.9 IMDB
The work behind 'forensic linguistics' was especially intriguing to me.

They've got another one like that on the Atlanta Olympics bombing. It was still interesting, but not quite as good in my mind.

You could be right. Although there are a lot of moving parts to the story that would be tricky to rush through too. In the end, we enjoyed it, but it helped a lot that we have visited the Gardner and so were able to have a bit more of a connection to the show. (Heck, I was living a handful of blocks away from the museum when the heist happened!)

I'll also suggest Challenger: The Final Flight. Technically not a crime documentary, but only because the negligence involved wasn't deemed criminal.

I totally agree that it would have been better as a single 1-2hr documentary, which seems to be the case for a lot of these docuseries. This is my genre, I've seen almost every series mentioned in this thread; all worth a shot. If you have a high tolerance, the previously mentioned "Dont F' With Cats" and "Evil Genius" are two of the most insane stories ever.

Here is an odd suggestion: Who Killed Little Gregory? on Netflix in 5 episodes.

The murder of 4-year-old Gregory was a major unsolved crime in France decades ago. Over the years the story has repeatedly come back into the news when new evidence has come to light. I had read about it in French and couldn't figure out the convoluted story. So I read up in English. Still couldn't understand all the ins and outs. When this docuseries showed up on Netflix in 2019, I felt compelled to watch. Now I understand why all the stories about it are so confusing. It's really an indictment of the media circus around the tragedy as well as the self-serving actions of some government officials. You can watch it in French with subtitles or dubbed into English.

The Tragic Story of Floyd Collins, on YouTube https://youtu.be/huwbY7EDVEI
The story of how Floyd Collins got trapped in a cave and the media circus, and literal circus, around the rescue attempts. The real-life events were made into a major motion picture starring Kirk Douglas, Ace in the Hole (1951), which I wholeheartedly recommend. It’s a lesson in greed. I’ve seen it a couple of times.

Just thought of another... "Money Heist"

Granted, it's fictional drama and not a docuseries. But it does involve crime, cat-and-mouse crime-solving, clever heists (obviously), and all that good stuff. So maybe a nice break from all the true crime?

No sure if you are a sports fan or not, but "The Last Dance" on Netflix is really good. I am about halfway through it and it has been excellent.

The Food That Built America on History Channel

Goes through history of how products/businesses came to be like Kraft Cheese, the Oreo, Hersheys Chocolate, Nabisco etc. They talk about the products and some of the business side as well which ties to finance.

I wasn't aware Kraft made its leap developing products for the war effort, or the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup was made by an employee they fired or the original TV dinner was made as Swanson could not sell 260 tons of frozen turkey after thanksgiving which they were keeping frozen in 10 refridgerated railroad cars.

Thankfully the show is not super dry and unflavorable I think due to the newer narrators and the play acting.

You can watch several free full episodes here: https://play.history.com/shows/the-food ... /episode-1

Making of a Murderer. Interesting series, but what is most fascinating from a psychological perspective is how many people watch the series and end up absolutely, positively, beyond a shadow of a doubt convinced despite having had a massive body of evidence to the contrary not revealed.
