Re: What are you listening to now
I just discovered “J-Pop” and “K-Pop” which is assorted Japanese and Korean pop music. Very light and upbeat even if not knowing the language.
Very positive and upbeat energy and vibes.
Perhaps the “feeling” of the music gets transferred without the encumbrances of words. Dunno.
Although I do understand a little of the languages here and there……

Yes, I've heard that the K-Pop band "BTS" is probably the hottest band in the world right now (e.g. 605 million Youtube views for the song below.)Sandtrap wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 10:05 am I just discovered “J-Pop” and “K-Pop” which is assorted Japanese and Korean pop music. They do sing in English sometimes but I don't think many of the band members speak it.

She died yesterday in a private plane crash in Brazil, age 26. Not a bad singer! So many singers/musicians have died that way. It seems to be an occupational hazard as they’re always flying somewhere for concerts, and frequently in private aircraft which may have not-so-good maintenance and safety standards compared with commercial aircraft. Listed here are a few of them:

Re: What are you listening to now
I am really enjoying the series. Carreyrou is an ace investigator and story-teller. The clip of James "Often-wrong-never-in-doubt" Mattis making a fool of himself is priceless. I guess the military blunders are not so hard to understand.heartwood wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 8:07 amI'm continuing to listen to these podcasts, hearing e9 just now. Titled The Military it reviews Holmes' interactions with the DOD and particularly Gen Mattis.cbeck wrote: ↑Wed Sep 15, 2021 6:42 pmSpeaking of the WSJ one of the interesting factoids is that as Carreyrou was preparing his first article on Theranos for publication in the WSJ in 2015, Holmes got wind of it and tried to get Rupert Murdoch to shut it down. Even though Murdoch had personally invested $125 million he declined to stop Carreyrou's investigation, the article was published, and Murdoch's stake in Theranos evaporated as it was always destined to do. Not what I would have expected of Murdoch.heartwood wrote: ↑Wed Sep 15, 2021 3:00 pmI've listened to all episodes posted so far. It's riveting for me. Carreyrou has full command of the facts and history, and tells a believable damning story using those and also audio and transcripts of her dealings. I'm waiting for the next episode.cbeck wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 7:29 pmWait til you hear Carreyrou's latest, including childbirth as a legal tactic, fake Ebola tests, phantom audited financials, and best of all, "Smart people picked off Mado[ff], but not you." You'll never hear an apology from any on that list, most of whom are either borderline or out-and-out psychopaths. However, you may see some efforts at reputational repair, such as by that thug David Boies, who is now representing Virginia Giuffre in her lawsuit against Prince Andrew pro bono.heartwood wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:30 am
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
I read his book a few years ago. I've seen the docudrama and the documentary. All unbelievable, and it's getting weirder as they jockey in the courts.
I believe I have not heard an "I'm sorry" from anyone involved, from Holmes, to Kissinger, Schultz, Rupert Murdoch, Boies, but esp Holmes. No remorse or apology from anyone.
Carreyroo, the WSJ reporter, deserves kudos for his work.
I am hoping that she gets the full twenty years, but think ten is more likely. But she is going to testify and face the full brunt of cross examination.
Unfortunately no one comes off well. Yes, he speculates on her pregnancy/childbirth as tactics to first delay the trial and now to perhaps influence any verdict. Your other references above are well done as well.
Curiously I find no mention of the podcasts in the WSJ.
Did you know that for the legal services that Boies was providing Theranos, he was getting paid in stock? She even suckered Boies himself.
The trial is expected to take three months!
I'll acknowledge that Carreyrou is writing his version of the story and I have yet to hear Holmes' version, but it's fascinating and so well documented, esp with taped clips from the principals. As described she's a unique personality. I don't mean that as a compliment. At the end of e9 there's a taped snippet of Mattis describing Elizabeth that's worth listening to.
I see there's also a series of podcasts by Rebecca Jarvis of ABC playing on Spotify, titled The Dropout, aka Holmes. I have not listened to any of them.
I find Holmes more fascinating than other stone-cold psychopaths like Musk, for example. She apparently took the lessons to heart after growing up in a family culture of psychopathy since her father was a VP at Enron. The most interesting fact from Carreyrou in the last episode is that the 99.6% conviction rate of federal prosecutors. So, Holmes is on her way to prison. But before then she is going to take the stand and is going to get fried alive in the cross examination.

One day, I'm out sweeping the courtyard, about 30 units in the apartment complex, I realized that there were a lot of TV's tuned into that afternoon's Korean Soap Opera echoing all around me. Then later, visited my mom who was about 86 back then, and her TV was on a Korean Soap Opera, and she's not Korean.
Incredible.
Maybe when I'm finished binging on Chicago Med and Gray's Anatomy, I'll see what's so attractive about Korean Soap Operas, although the music is very nice.

Thanks so much for this! What a find!
From Wikipedia: "The album features guest appearances from Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Sutton, Billy Strings, Chris Thile, Noam Pikelny, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, Tony Trischka, Michael Cleveland and David Grisman."
I've only gotten through about half of the long album, but I'm struck by how varied it is, musically. It almost has the feel of an old "mix tape." The first track, Vertigo, is about as Dawggy as can be!

Not sure if I quoted this correctly as still learning....but, this is brilliant and to see live must of been amazing. Little older but another great Thile collaboration is with Brad Mehldau. Love Brads playing style from his days with Joshua Redman's group. Favorite is "Don't Think Twice its Alright". Since I'm mostly listening (too much talking for me) I'll post here.
Adele, One Night Only on Paramount+. At the Griffith Observatory in LA and interview with Oprah. First broadcast on Nov 14 on CBS. Some older music and three new songs.
It's been 6 years since her last album. New album out Friday after 6 years, called 30
So glad she's back.

Thanks so much for this! I love The Beatles, collectively and individually. George's songs here are sometimes melancholy or haunting, but lovely. I love that sweet guitar (by George or Eric Clapton or Dave Mason?) on "I'd Have You Anytime." His cover of my favorite Everly Brothers' song "Let It Be Me" was wonderful. And his phrasing as he sings "The Light That Has Lighted the World" is perfect.JAZZISCOOL wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 8:50 am"Let it Be Me" is so beautiful. I also love "My Sweet Lord" by GH. Live remake of Cowboy Bebop starts today on Netflix. To market the show, they released the soundtracks to the show on all the streaming platforms Not sure I will watch show but have been a fan of the music for years.

Candlebox = Far Behind
"Far Behind" is one of a few hit 1990s singles written in tribute to the late singer Andrew Wood. In a 1994 interview with Playgirl, Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin stated that it was inspired by two friends who overdosed on heroin and "represents the loss of love between friends and having to be left with the feeling of emptiness."[2] He elaborated in a 2008 interview:
"I wrote 'Far Behind' for Andy Wood. I was a huge Malfunkshun fan and a huge Mother Love Bone fan and I got to know Andy early on in his career when I was working in a shoe store with Susan Silver who was managing Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains."[3]

Adele's new album titled 30, out today. Listening on Spotify.
For me it's a very different style(s) from her previous work. At first listen I heard few songs I would consider "singles" material. For me, many are unrecognizable as Adele's voice.
I'll give it a few more tries, but a disappointment on first listen.

I liked that but chose to listen to Cerphe and the Weasel on WHFS 102.3 most of the time.dodecahedron wrote: ↑Sat Oct 23, 2021 5:17 pm 60s soul music channel on Amazon, currently playing Ain't too proud to beg by the Temptations.
And now... it is playing the late great Aretha Franklin singing You make me feel like a natural woman.
This 60s soul music makes me feel like a teenager again, back in DC listening to my favorite radio station of the time, WOL. Sadly, WOL is now a talk station, no more music.
