IMO his discography was nearly flawless from the debut through Rust Never Sleeps (and Live Rust). If I had to choose a favorite I'd probably go with After the Gold Rush but there are many contenders. His 1977 3-LP (2-CD) compilation Decade deserves special mention as one of the best compilations by any artist and is essential in its own right as it includes a number of excellent previously unreleased songs.tenkuky wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 9:10 amGot me.Bungo wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 1:24 amNever disappoints? Have you suppressed the memory of his '80s output before Freedom? And honestly, for me, his new stuff has been more miss than hit for the past 20+ years. (The archival releases have been mostly stellar, though!) I keep hoping he and the Horse have one more album of the caliber of, say, Ragged Glory left in them. Based on initial listening, this new one isn't going to clear that high bar, but it sounds pretty OK so far. Hopefully it will grow on me!
I meant “often doesn’t”
Yeah, this one is OK.
I relisten to Harvest and After the Gold Rush to remind myself of his greatness.

This was her debut album. Some never get past the unique sound of her voice, but her singing is a national treasure to my ears. It's about as "Americana" as it gets.

A masterful revision to an original masterpiece!
There's something oddly gratifying about hearing the artist revisiting the yearnings of his youth after living a long, full life.

Yusuf is a great artist. There’s a quality in his songs, I can’t define it, that touches me emotionally. Too bad he missed all those years when he forsook music. I wonder if he regrets it.

I agree. Both the lyrics and the music are moving, and the combination is sublime.

I just found out Dar Williams has a new album out. It's a nice-sounding album.
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Dar Williams. She seems to wear her vulnerability on her sleeve. I once found myself standing directly behind her as she waited to go back on stage at the Iron Horse, packed to the rafters. She's actually really short!

It's been a while, so I listened to the following Kamelot albums in their entireties during my commute this week:
- Epica
- The Black Halo
Together they recount the two parts of Goethe's Faust. Worth a listen. I especially like the tracks Wander and Memento Mori.

I've been making my way through a playlist on Spotify based on the periodic Facebook/Twitter posts by the drummer Mike Portnoy where he posts his favorite 20 or 25 albums each year since 1967.
https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/mpyear ... id=52&_rdr
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0KOjg ... =copy-link
He's currently up to 1992. I'm finally listening to all the bands I've heard about since I was a teenager but only ever scratched the surface on: Deep Purple, Derek and the Dominos, Cream, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Black Sabbath, Rainbow/Dio, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, Elton John...
And that's just the 70s. I'm also digging into all the 80s metal bands, and it's great to see that genre's evolution from it's 70's roots and how it evolves and branches into the very technical and the very dark.
Another thing that I've gotten a better grasp on listening to this playlist is the transition of the 70s progressive rock bands, some of whom drifted toward the inaccessible and esoteric (Yes, King Crimson, etc.) into a more pop new wave direction in the early 80s. King Crimson sounds a bit like the Talking Heads during this period.

I started hearing this tune on my morning rush hour commute on a local college station. The host of the Wednesday "FM on Toast" program would play it every year. I found it to be absolutely infectious. I'd hear it in the morning, and it would be stuck in my head for days!
I first thought it was just this guy's style of singing. Then a while ago I saw some critique that assumed he was just drunk and forgot the words. That seemed likely, so I went with that. Now that I've done a bit of sampling of his rather extensive recorded legacy on his YouTube channel — Joseph Spence - Topic — it's obvious that this was just his unique style of singing. Kind of like some sort of Bahamian folk scat singing, except every now and then there are actually a few recognizable words strung together.
Here's a surprisingly delightful version of this traditional tune: Down by the Riverside

Now I'm going to have to have a Dan Hicks binge. Fire up the turntable. First time I saw them was at the then-new VCU Franklin Street Gym in '74. It was a free Valentine's Day concert by the VCU Concert Committee. The opening act was some unknown guy named Bruce Springstien. Seriously, they got his name wrong on the flyer. He played a fair bit in Richmond in those days, but the Stone Pony had opened in Asbury Park the end of '73 iirc. Okay, let me look...
Edited: It was '73, not '74.
