It is also off a tribute album "Return of the Grievous Angel" to Mr. Parson. It has some nice covers by Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello. Really good album if you like alt/country/americana music.

Yes, I liked him too, thanks for replying. Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head and Mighty Clouds of Joy immediately spring to mind as well.Sandi_k wrote: ↑Wed Jun 02, 2021 12:03 amI set up a Pandora station for BJ Thomas yesterday. Loving the results.
The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid soundtrack was the first album I ever purchased, and it led to a lifelong fondness for Thomas' voice. A blast from my childhood, along with Jimmie Rodgers, also a recent RIP candidate.

Shook has an interesting vocal style. I like a lot of her further-astray tunes. Some of the straight-ahead country is a bit outside my preferences. So far, I'm halfway through this album: Sarah Shook & the Disarmers – Years
Amanda Anne Platt, a very fine songwriter, is also from NC — Asheville. Here's one example: Learning How to Love Him · Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters

Re: What are you listening to now
According to lastfm.com, here are my most listened to albums last month:
1. James Taylor: One Man Dog (Acoustic Rock)
2. Nikki Minaj: Beam me up Scotty (hip hop)
3. James McMurtry: Complicated Game (acoustic rock)
4. Jack Ingram: The Marfa Tapes (acoustic country)
I highly recommend James McMurtry's album. He's the son of writer Larry McMurtry, and his lyrics are great. They are like little stories about real people. Here's a song he sings about a couple approaching retirement:

I also highly recommend The Marfa Tapes. It was recorded outdoors, all acoustic, absolutely life, and even with a few gaffes. (In some songs your can hear jets in the distance flying over.) Miranda Lambert sings on a lot of the songs: Here's one of my favorite tracks:

Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones from the Mick Taylor era, IMHO, the best version of the band. It sounded so good, I let the original CD, not the double disc reissue, play twice.
I have mostly been listening to live Rolling Stones lately, both legitimate releases and bootlegs, and hearing some of the tunes on the original CD that are seldom played live was a treat.

Normally at this time of day I'm listening to all sorts of birds chirping in the morning air. This morning however, there's perhaps a dozen crows circling around and making all sorts of racket. I suppose that sound will anger the late sleepers, but I sort of like it and can't help but wonder what the burds are all crowing about.

I really liked the Marfa Tapes as per your recommendation. I will admit to being at first put off by the audiophile quality, but have warmed up to the quality of the performances. I realize the effort to capture "lightening in a bottle" with the live, no frills recording style, but I hope that an attempt will be made to re-record with the best acoustical settings. However it is an impressive effort. Here is my favorite track:Petrocelli wrote: ↑Wed Jun 02, 2021 2:32 pm According to lastfm.com, here are my most listened to albums last month:

Something in the way you mentioned being backed by a good band made me think of another artist. I wonder, have you heard Eilen Jewell? (I've mentioned her before, but I'm not above repeating myself...)
Eilen Jewell is another fine singer and songwriter that I would love to hear no matter who backed her up, but the icing on the cake is that she's backed by a great rockabilly sort of band with an amazing guitarist. (I don't know where he came from, but I'd guess he was a session musician somewhere.) They sound live exactly like they sound on their recordings, so they're not over-produced.
Unlike Amanda Anne Platt, who's generally fairly sunny in disposition, Eilen Jewell is a slight, generally cheery, blond-haired, blue-eyed young woman who paints vivid pictures filled with some of the bleakest images and darkest emotions. But I just think she's fantastic. Her vocal style is unique, too. It reminds me very much of Billie Holiday's — maybe with a country tinge.
The first album of hers I bought at a festival after a performance is still my favorite:
Eilen Jewell — Sea of Tears (2009)
The first two tracks would be a good introduction:
Rain Roll In
Sweet Rose
Oh, heck, here's one more *real* dark one, but somehow so beautiful:
Codeine Arms

DD still whines how she wanted to go see Eric. Sadly, I think his touring days are over due to physical issues, peripheral neuropathy.
The concert was excellent, opening act was Robert Randolph & The Family Band. First time I had ever heard of them, but they were smoking hot. On stage, Clapton seemed very shy, he let his playing speak for him.

That's a great feature. I can just imagine what treasures could be found on the Rounder label (not to be confused with Round Records).
My one and only show at the Blue Note was to see Diana Krall one New Years Eve with another couple... She's got a vocal quality that always makes me feel like I'm sitting right next to her. Same with Lucy Kaplansky. I can't explain it... there's a certain intimacy about it...

...a gorgeous sounding album from 2015 by two long-time collaborators and some high-powered backing. I have the CD, and can only find this one track on YouTube, but the album can be auto-played in its entirety on the record label's site:

Re: What are you listening to now
Once again I am going to have to thank you for introducing me to Ms. Jewell. I have downloaded lots of her tunes and am enjoying them immensely. At this rate I am going to have to figure a music budget for staying within my 4% SWR.iceport wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 12:56 pmYes novicemoney, she's an impressive singer and songwriter, and backed by a fine band. Her voice and writing both seem to flow from her so freely and effortlessly! She's very quickly become one of my favorite artists. I'm so glad you like them — I really love seeing good music and appreciative listeners find each other! Good music is one of those simple but essential pleasures in life.novicemoney wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 2:15 am Iceport,
I have to say that because of your post, I have become a fan of the Honeycutters (or Amanda Anne Platt as they bill themselves now). I have spent the last few days going through their catalogue and am pretty impressed at the consistency of Ms. Platt's songwriting and vocals. The band provides solid, expert backup. Here is a track I really like "All I ever" :

or "Marie":

Thanks for the heads up.
Codeine Arms
just can't stop myself... saw this live cover — with video — of a classic Eric Andersen tune on YouTube:

Are you familiar with Angus and Julia Stone? They are a brother /sister act from Australia. Probably their best known song is "Big Jet Plane".
Here is the acoustic version (with Angus on lead):

With Julia on lead vocals on "Nothing Else":

And "Hush" from the "Down the Way" album:

Thanks for all the great music suggestions.
