Apparently almost no posters, other than me, listen to new music. But....
I highly recommend Kendrick Lamar's Damn. It is the only popular music album to win a Pulitzer Prize.
Listen to the intensity of his rapping at about 3:00. It's fortunate that the video has subtitles.

That's not true at all. There's a lot more commentary on the old stuff, I suspect, because more of us have familiarity with that music in common. New stuff gets mentioned, too.Petrocelli wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 5:34 pm Apparently almost no posters, other than me, listen to new music. But....
I don't know rap at all.
The new stuff I listen to tends to be more roots music, folk, bluegrass. Some of it's really creative music, but also the kind of music that you'd probably be hard-pressed to tell whether it was old or new, unless you already knew it.

I do listen to some new music, but not rap or hip hop. I just don’t get it, wrong generation. They say your taste in music and style of dress crystallizes when you come of age, it’s been true in my case. They also say that each generation hates the next generation’s music. I think that’s generally true.Petrocelli wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 5:34 pm Apparently almost no posters, other than me, listen to new music. But....

But, here is the problem with most rap: I can't have something like that playing unless I am alone. A lot of my music listening is on my driveway, listening to my garage set-up. Neighbors see me outside, they stop to talk.
And, having a mother, a wife, and daughters, I find the disrespect most rappers show to women via their lyrics is off-putting, to say the least.
In short, I am not willing to shovel through a ton of manure to find some rap that is unlike most rap, talent notwithstanding.

Actually, I like all types of music. I track my Spotify listening on Lastfm.com. Here are my most listened to albums over the last 365 days, all of which I recommend:
1. Sturgill Simpson - Cutting Grass (Bluegrass)
2. Kendrick Lamar - Damn (Rap)
3. Taylor Swift - Evermore (pop)
4. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher (indie rock)
5. Run the Jewels - RTJ4 (rap)
6. Vienna Philharmonic - Mozart: Wind Concertos and Serenades (classical)
7. Taylor Swift - Folklore (pop)
8. Afred Brendel - Beethoven: Complete Sonatas and Concertos (classical)
And I get that a lot of older people don't like rap. But my parents didn't like Hendrix, Zeppelin, the Sex Pistols, or the Rolling Stones, so I understand.

I don't know much about Amethyst Kiah. Her presence on YouTube isn't huge, but there are a few more recent tunes. I started hearing her tune — Black Myself — last year about this time (local college station, Folk Alley), as one of Kiah's contributions to the Our Native Daughters Project (2019) with Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell. She's an incredibly inspired musician.

I know nothing of Simpson, but I've been curious about this album after hearing about it. Your mention made me finally look it up. I didn't realize he scored such stellar group of musicians to back him up! I know several of them from their own successful careers. I like it so far! Very fine instrumentals, of course, but Simpson's got a great voice, too!
Mike Bub – upright bass
Stuart Duncan – fiddle, background vocals
Mark Howard – background vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar
Sierra Hull – mandolin, background vocals
Miles Miller – percussion, background vocals
Tim O'Brien – background vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar
Sturgill Simpson – vocals, rhythm guitar
Scott Vestal – banjo, background vocals
I took to bluegrass immediately as a young tike — as introduced through the Grateful Dead...

Re: What are you listening to now
Am listening to a deep house summer hits 2021 playlist. It's basically relaxing chill-out music.
Was listening to a 90's playlist last night that did have some rap/hip-hop, but it was of the "wholesome" kind. I'm talking about Heavy D and the Boyz. Strong driving beat but totally conventional love-song lyrics with a bit of self-deprecation thrown in because Heavy D was, well, overweight.
As for 2010's/2020's music, I'm not a fan of 100% straight rap, but a little rap intermixed with regular pop goes down well with me. It can balance out some of the sacchariney sweet female vocals found these days in pop.

That was my crossover album, too! I was 13 when it came out. I think the three original Rowan tunes and the Stones cover helped ease me into the genre. (I still have the vinyl.) That led to Grisman and the Dawg Music sub-genre, and Tony Rice, before pretty much abandoning bluegrass through college years and maybe 10 years beyond... due to other priorities.Petrocelli wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:14 amI first started listening to Bluegrass because of Jerry Garcia's Old and In the Way. It's still one of my favorite genres. (I'm probably one of the few 60 year olds that listens to both bluegrass and rap.)
Then a relative of one of my dearest friends started his own bluegrass festival on a picturesque dairy farm in the Appalachian foothills of Western Mass, and that led to a far deeper and broader appreciation that has endured.
The festival was enormously successful, and booked a heaping handful of some of the very best national touring bluegrass acts every year. They included a nice mix of traditional and more progressive bluegrass bands, including several fine female artists like Laurie Lewis & Grant Street, and some regional and local talent, also. It was really a special event that grew rapidly in prominence, but it came to an abrupt end after 5 or 6 years. Ronnie McCoury even named a traditional instrumental tune after it: Noppet Hill Breakdown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the whole rap thing, I'm not sure I buy that the somewhat simplistic generational incompatibility explanation applies to me. I'm open to the possibility, but I tend to think of it more along the lines of auditory repulsion. Take David Lee Roth, as another example. His shrill screeching turned what would have been music I could take or leave into music that I found painfully repulsive. As I found myself having to endure the endless replay of Van Halen tunes in the '80s, I would often wonder whether Roth managed to be to annoyingly obnoxious inadvertently, or if it was really his whole point. Well, I wonder exactly the same thing about the vast majority of rap music. I can't tolerate opera, either, but it's obvious to me that it's not supposed to annoy me. I just can't tell with rap music. If being annoying is intentional, well, mission accomplished!
At any rate, anytime I find myself wondering whether an artist is annoying me on purpose or by accident, I'm generally not inclined to want to hear more of it... the end result is the same either way: it gives me a headache.
Thanks for the sampling. I'm already a fan!Petrocelli wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:14 am Sturgill Simpson is an interesting musician. He started out as kind of a straight honky-tonk country artist:
The Brandi Carlile tracks I listed are from 2007 and 2009, yet she remained a complete mystery to me until recently (sometimes you feel like you are living in a cave). I guess something old can be new if you have never heard it before. Really like this thread as it has exposed me to all sorts of music.
I still remember how I learned who she was. Dry sunny day. Trimming the yews by the front door. Loudspeaker by my side streaming a live FM broadcast. Then this song came on:
Brandi Carlile - That Wasn't Me (Official Video)
By the middle of that tune I was stopped in my tracks, spellbound. So poignant.
So *that's* Brandi Carlile!?! Wow. She's for real, not just another fly-by-night pop singer.
Another vote for Brandi Carlile. I started listing to her a long time ago , a la The Story. I've liked her other work, but was especially impressed by her 2018 album, By the Way I Forgive You. The 2019 Grammy's gave her several awards for it. I like The Joke, and the title track and most of the rest.
I'm listening to the album now. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... Ic6GcHOFdc
Johnny Cash - Man in Black
(live on The Johnny Cash TV Show, February, 1971)
"A few weeks later, during an end-of-episode monologue, Cash played Man in Black again, dedicating it to a group of servicemen from Kentucky who came to see the show at the Ryman. There could be no mistaking Cash’s association of the song with the war and American servicemen. After the camera panned to show the men in uniform, Cash said: 'This is my uniform. For four years I wore the uniform of the United States Air Force; now they call me the man in black.' "
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men
And, I wear it for the thousands who have died
Believing that the Lord was on their side
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died
Believing that we all were on their side
Check out this version by the Cowboy Junkies.
The album it's on, The Trinity Sessions, is outstanding.
I just listened to the most recent Bogleheads on Investing podcast with guest Dr. Jason Hsu. I've spent a lot of time in Asia, but listening to this podcast made me realize how little I knew about the Chinese markets. Very interesting!
Nice, an atmospheric rendition. My first time hearing this band, I’ll check out the album. That’s what I like about streaming services, I can listen to any album, any time, most of them, anyway.Petrocelli wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 3:23 pmCheck out this version by the Cowboy Junkies.
My favorite track from this album is the very slow version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane"Petrocelli wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 3:23 pmCheck out this version by the Cowboy Junkies.
I read somewhere that likens the Cowboy Junkies sound as "rock and roll on prozac".
Re: What are you listening to now
I like this band, their Sweet Jane is nice. Now I’m playing their first album from 1986. I’m hesitant to mention its title here.novicemoney wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 8:53 pmMy favorite track from this album is the very slow version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane"Petrocelli wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 3:23 pmCheck out this version by the Cowboy Junkies.
Not even going to bother to check the album, but I'm certain I have the title track on my playlist just from that last sentenceNicolas wrote: ↑Tue Jun 01, 2021 10:36 amI like this band, their Sweet Jane is nice. The Cowboy Junkies did a superb cover of Jerry's (actually Hunter/Garcia's) To Lay Me Down on a wonderful Dead cover album called Deadicated. It's a sweet tune to start with — one perfectly chosen to suit the Cowboy Junkies style — and they do a beautiful version.
Nice version, alas the album must be discontinued, I can't seem to find it on iTunes. There is another cover by The Cowboy Junkies that I like. It is Gram Parson's "Ohh Las Vegas"iceport wrote: ↑Tue Jun 01, 2021 11:43 am The Cowboy Junkies did a superb cover of Jerry's (actually Hunter/Garcia's) To Lay Me Down on a wonderful Dead cover album called Deadicated. It is also off a tribute album "Return of the Grievous Angel" to Mr. Parson. It has some nice covers by Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello. Really good album if you like alt/country/americana music.
I set up a Pandora station for BJ Thomas yesterday. Loving the results.
The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid soundtrack was the first album I ever purchased, and it led to a lifelong fondness for Thomas' voice. A blast from my childhood, along with Jimmie Rodgers, also a recent RIP candidate.
