I was winding through the grocery store aisles today while the store was playing "Everyday is a Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow.
Re: What are you listening to now
Jeff Beck just keeps getting better with age and he picks some great players for his band. I have watched a few interviews with him and I can’t get over how humble he is. He always says that other guitarists are better than he is, that they can do things that he can’t. He especially admires John McLaughlin, someone that I need to listen to more.OpenMinded1 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 9:25 pmEnjoyed watching this video of a great live performance a couple days ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoQHnzHrqgE Jeff Beck (guitar of course), Vinnie Colaiuta (Drums), Tal Wilkenfeld (bass guitar), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and guest appearances by Eric Clapton and Imogen Heap.Nicolas wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 4:20 pm The Blues Is Alive and Well — Buddy Guy, with Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, James Bay

And one of the things I like most about his playing (besides its brilliance) is that it's spare; he knows the value of restraint and not stomping all over everyone else.

Not a whole lot more so far, but there's this:Doom&Gloom wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 3:43 pm Her publicist announced that Nanci did not want the cause of her death released until a week after her death. So the details could be coming soon. Or not ...
That came from a very nice remembrance of Nanci Griffith's whole career published on 8/27/21 in the Austin American-Statesman:The cause of death has not been announced. On Tuesday, Griffith’s manager, Burt Stein, issued a brief addition to the original statement issued Aug. 13: “Nanci’s wishes were for no funeral or religious ceremony be held in her name. She asked that in lieu of flowers to make donations to Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, the Mines Advisory Group of Manchester, England, or The Store in Nashville, TN.”
Remembering Nanci Griffith, the greatest Austin-raised singer-songwriter ever
Most of the people interviewed for this article had lost touch with Griffith over the final years of her life. But the outpouring of sentiment on social media when she died made it clear her music has been remembered. And just two months earlier, Grammy-winning, Wimberley-raised musician Sarah Jarosz closed a performance on “Austin City Limits” with “You Can’t Go Home Again,” a song from Griffith’s second album.
Listening to that song now, it feels like a bittersweet farewell from an artist whose influence on Austin music was greater than she’s been given credit for, and perhaps greater than she ever knew.
That Sarah Jarosz performance from earlier this year is just beautiful!

That Austin American-Statesman remembrance was very well done.
I listened to the Jarosz link--very nice! That's a song of Nanci's that I don't listen to enough.
Thanks for the links!

Today, while cleaning the kitchen, I had Alexa play John McLaughlin and the Fourth Dimension Live at Ronnie Scott’s.

While I respect the musicianship, I had a hard time really getting into it. Have to give it another try.
I did see the Mahavisna Orchestra open for Jeff Beck in Springfield, MA on April 26, 1975. Here’s some guy’s take on that show and some alternative comments from folks who saw shows from that tour, including Ed, that’s me.

Right now I'm listening to Alligator Records 50 Years of Genuine Houserockin' Music.
Alligator Records has released compilation two-CD sets of blues artists every 5 years, starting with their 20th anniversary. 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th anniversary releases followed. I have them all.
This particular release is a three-CD set (two disk vinyl), and all of the 58 tunes have been remastered. And the sound is excellent, unlike some of remastered music.
Since I first subscribed to Amazon Unlimited HD Music, I had not bought a CD until now.
Even though this set is on Amazon Unlimited HD Music, the internet might go down, then how could I listen?

There’s a multi-disk box set coming out end of October, looks to be good! Archives - Volume Two: The Reprise Years (1968-1971).
Last October Archives - Volume One: The Early Years (1963-1967) was released. I’m streaming that one now, nearly six hours, very nice.

I've got Tom Waits' 1973 debut album "Closing Time" on right now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwYMGg_gUHw
He was only 22-23 at the time and I always find it hard to believe he wrote some of this stuff ("Martha" in particular) at such a young age. You know, to have that perspective. Just a gem of an album!

Re: What are you listening to now
I am going back and re-listening to their old hits now.
Several things I discovered now as an adult:
1. Their song composition and structure is superb! Changing time and key signatures, use of innovative interplay of instruments, voices and spaces.
2. The harmonies are wonderful, Agnetha and Frida's voices are distinct yet overlap so well.
3. They are/were well regarded by peers: no less than Pete Townshend and John Lennon admired their pop writing ability and apparently QE2 likes Dancing Queen
My faves are the introspective ones: Name of the Game, Winner Takes it All, Knowing Me Knowing You.
And yes, Abba songs are like Lay's Potato Chips, "you can't stop at one"

Ah, Neil. Huge fan (as you may tell from my username). I saw him with The Horse in LA a few years ago in a medium-size venue. He opened with "From Hank to Hendrix." All acoustic, just him sitting on a chair, with his guitar, knee bouncing in usual fashion. I will never forget it. I love "Natural Beauty" on the back side. A vastly underrated work.iceport wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 2:04 pmYeah, that's a great one. Actually, there are so many really fine tunes on the album, including the "title track." I read his book a few years ago. I've seen the docudrama and the documentary. All unbelievable, and it's getting weirder as they jockey in the courts.
I believe I have not heard an "I'm sorry" from anyone involved, from Holmes, to Kissinger, Schultz, Rupert Murdoch, Boies, but esp Holmes. No remorse or apology from anyone.

Re: What are you listening to now
Wait til you hear Carreyrou's latest, including childbirth as a legal tactic, fake Ebola tests, phantom audited financials, and best of all, "Smart people picked off Mado[ff], but not you." You'll never hear an apology from any on that list, most of whom are either borderline or out-and-out psychopaths. However, you may see some efforts at reputational repair, such as by that thug David Boies, who is now representing Virginia Giuffre in her lawsuit against Prince Andrew pro bono.heartwood wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:30 amThanks, I'll give it a try.cbeck wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 8:26 pm WSJ Reporter John Carreyroo, who blew up the Theranos scam, is hosting a current podcast series on the Elizabeth Holmes trial which is currently in progress.
