Stumbled on Jeremy Dutcher. He's a Canadian pianist and tenor who also is one of fewer than 100 people who still speak and sing in Wolastoq. https://www.npr.org/2019/05/20/72505834 ... k-concert

Thanks, not bad! I have to confess, I'm not a fan of "Christian music" per se... but this band doesn't overwhelm you with it at all, it's extremely subtle and will probably escape many. Nicely constructed songs and overall sound.golfrgirl wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 8:19 pm Just discovered these guys today. The Silver Heels: https://open.spotify.com/album/7mQxs7p ... l_branch=1

"Silver Heels" is also the name of a Bob Welch/Fleetwood Mac song... wonder if they were inspiration for the Silver Heels band?Angst wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 8:52 amThanks, not bad! YouTuber Katherine of Sky https://www.youtube.com/c/KatherineOfSkyGaming I started watching her Factorio tutorials a few weeks ago (Factorio is a very complex computer game) and she has such a pleasant voice that I now just put her videos on in the background instead of music while I'm working or browsing the internet.

Amen!
Wife told me this morning.
A couple of days ago I watched ZZ Top - That Little Ol' Band From Texas on Netflix. Interesting group, to say the least.
I'm thinking it's a good day to listen to them, though that could be said of any day.

I haven't played ZZ Top in years, but a few bars into Deguello left me wondering why. They were first and foremost a great *blues* band. They approached the blues with such energy and creativity!

Daboa — From the Gekko
Before that, and inspired by some ZZ Top-styled blues, I turned to Jerry Garcia's take on an old Hank Ballard tune. It's a prime example of Garcia-styled blues, with extended guitar solos, and Nicky Hopkins tinkling the ivories. Turned up loud, I was actually surprised at how well it fit with ZZ Top!

Yes a great album. One of my current projects is collecting Dylan covers. I never really appreciated the greatness of Mr. Dylan's songwriting until I started exploring other artists performing his music. The following examples are covers of tracks from Blood on the Tracks:
Emma Swift did an album of Dylan covers titled "Blonde on the Tracks" here is "You're a Big Girl Now":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejmLQiMMRVA
The band Mary Lee's Corvette(lead singer Mary Lee Kortes) did a song by song live album also titled "Blood on the Tracks" It seems to be well regarded. Here is their version of "If You See Her, Say Hello":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8p6nGU1vOg
Here is the late Austin singer Jimmy LaFave's version of "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7sWLahNSmI
Joan Osborne did an album of Dylan covers ("Songs of Bob Dylan")l Here is "Buckets of Rain":

Any suggestions on other great covers?

That's interesting. That's happened with me with other artists, but not Bob. (While there is fine musicianship on many of his albums, his songwriting was always the main attraction for me.) To be completely honest there are times when his voice is very unappealing and only the quality of the song transcends this. Also, I have a tendency to search for little known artists and so Dylan was not on my radar until recently. Things started turning around when I heard Diana Krall's version of "This Dream of Mine":iceport wrote: ↑Fri Jul 30, 2021 4:46 pmThat's interesting. I thought "this is a Dylan song? What am I not seeing?" Since then it has been a wonderful journey of discovery with very talented performers making their mark on a really good song. For instance when you compare the Peyroux version of "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When you Go" to the Lafave version that I listed, you realize what a good song it is in that they both work. This is true for many songs, but as you know Dylan wrote so many gems that it is an endless repertoire for artists covering his material.
I'm not saying anything that people don't already know, but as I noted, it really is new to me.
Anyway as a parting thought here is Norah Jones with "Heart of Mine":

Here's a really beautiful rendition of an early Dylan tune a friend sent me a few years ago, by Nanci Griffith, who's sweet voice is accompanied by the lonesome-sounding dobro playing of Jerry Douglas. (Nanci Griffith's voice is unusual, also, but I always found it very pleasant.)

I would say that being "repelled" by Dylan's voice would be a little strong. I think his voice can be very effective for certain songs, but not for (me) others. The voice he uses in "Nashville Skyline" and "Knocking on Heaven's Door" shows that he could sing with a "normal" voice(for want of a better word) when he wanted to. Perhaps the voice people most associate with him was cultivated persona. I read somewhere that he got criticized for the vocals on "Nashville Skyline" just like he got heat for going electric with his music. It's very interesting to me, maybe someone who knows more about him can explain it.iceport wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 2:25 pmThat's interesting, thanks for the explanation. At any rate "This Dream of You" was released on the 2009 album "Together Through Life". Dylan's version is pretty good with lots of emotion, he is still writing good music. There is another track that sounds pretty good, "I Feel A Change Comin' On". I would use a you tube link, but they only seem to link live performances, in my opinion the studio version are much better.
I like the Nanci Griffith cover, the liner notes say that the harmonica part was played by none other than Mr. Bob Dylan himself.

Thanks for the recommendation. This album is very good with "Tomorrow is a Long Time", "Don't Fall Apart on Me Tonight", "in the Summertime" as standouts to me. The other tracks are great also, but what I appreciate with this album is how lesser known songs were chosen. "You're a Big Girl" is fairly well known but it gets a pretty fresh approach and sounds great. I saw her several times in the mid to late 80s when she was an emerging singer-songwriter. The first time I saw her was at a small club with fewer than 30 people in attendance. One of her songs featured references to Lake Pontchartrain and she offered to give an album to anyone who could spell it. I kept telling my date how to spell it, but she was too shy to speak up. After several people failed, I spoke up. Went to the bar at Nanci's break and picked up my free vinyl of one of her first two albums. I don't remember which one it was now, but I still have it. At a later performance at the same club Lyle Lovett opened for her at a time before he had released his first album. Good times!

Dropped by to say that I'm loving the new Julian Lage album, Squint. He's far and away my favorite guitarist at the moment.
I will also add a couple Dylan covers, starting with the great Emma Swift album of Dylan covers from last year, "Blonde on the Tracks." It's just great.
And, since someone already mentioned Buckets of Rain, do check out this version by Neko Case.

Great story, D&G!Doom&Gloom wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 9:28 am Huge Nanci Griffith fan here. I really enjoy that rendition. She has a couple of albums of just covers that are fabulous. Her voice is indeed unusual and projects an image of youthful innocence--at least to my ears.
Good times!
I agree with you — Nanci Griffith's voice is very nice. Youthful innocence, yes — and kindness and warmth. I started hearing her on a local college station with a weekday morning rush hour show called "FM on Toast". One of my favorite tunes of hers is Listen To The Radio
Here's another really nice (and nice-fitting) cover tune from her first album of covers: John Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness (with John Prine singing back-up!)

Currently spinning: The Wood Brothers — Loaded (2008)
After spotting their cover of Dylan's Buckets of Rain, I found the whole album to be excellent. These guys are really good. I've seen them several times, and they always leave me wanting more! (Must be time to explore more of their catalog...)

I don't know for sure, but I think that brief period of decent-sounding singing was a one-off. I think it was Johnny Cash's prodding that made it happen. It must have been too much of a stretch for him to keep it going, unfortunately. I really doubt he could sing like that any time he wanted to. He must have just figured he could get by without the extra effort of singing halfway decently.novicemoney wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 11:12 pm The voice he uses in "Nashville Skyline" and "Knocking on Heaven's Door" shows that he could sing with a "normal" voice(for want of a better word) when he wanted to. Perhaps the voice people most associate with him was cultivated persona. I read somewhere that he got criticized for the vocals on "Nashville Skyline" just like he got heat for going electric with his music. It's very interesting to me, maybe someone who knows more about him can explain it.
As for how much of Dylan was real and how much is/was a cultivated persona, it's practically impossible to tell from this distance. He's an enigma. Some of the things Joni Mitchell has said along those lines ring true. And some of the things Dylan has said mystify me. (He said he was born to the wrong parents? WhereTF does that come from?)
Anyway, I really have a hard time getting past the sound of his voice, now. I think 2001's Love and Theft might have been the last album I bought of his and became familiar with.

I really like the John Prine tune on Ms. Griffith's album. The Townes Van Zandt tune "Tecumseh Valley" is also very good (if not grim). A beautiful duet with Arlo Guthrie:iceport wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 12:56 pmGreat story, D&G!Doom&Gloom wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 9:28 am Huge Nanci Griffith fan here. I really enjoy that rendition. John Prine is another singer with a very distinctive voice. He does really well in duets. Here he is with Iris Dement on a hilarious and naughty song "In Spite of Ourselves":

Aimee Mann - Save Me

The movie Magnolia was written around several of Aimee Mann’s songs.

I don’t know why I don’t listen to Aimee Mann more, because I like just about everything that she has recorded.
She wasn’t happy with her record company and bought back her Bachelor Number 2 album and released it herself. Good for her.

Agreed. Her Don’t Fall Apart on Me Tonight is transcendent. Her voice is so lovely and expressive. She covered I Shall Be Released at the 30th Anniversary Concert also, in 1992. I’m listening to that now… so good.novicemoney wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 11:51 pmThanks for the recommendation. The more I listen to this album the more I like it.Nicolas wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 9:53 pm Standing in the Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan released May 21, 2021. Some very nice renditions.

Yola's new album, Stand for Myself. It's a good one!

I'd not heard her or of her until some time last year after 4 nominations at the 2020 Grammys.
