I'm watching two shows: the new: The Serpent on Netflix. More serial killer porn! Actually, another creative look at a unique, eerie serial killer based mostly in Thailand. Worth a watch certainly.

And the re-watch: 30 Rock. Wow. Only 15 years ago but seems like 50 with the (great, hilarious) choices of comedy on the show. Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) is as good a comedic character as it gets. And errrrr...ummmm....dancing lightly away from any political comments....this show has irrefutable proof that many in Hollywood were quite aware of the 'sinners' in their midst...

Queen of the South. I saw the first season in 2016, but then missed seasons 2-4 due to DW's stroke. Just caught the first episode of season 5 last week.

Cobra Kai on Netflix. It is good and brings back a lot of memories from the 80s!

We just watched "This Is a Robbery", on Netflix.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_a_Robbery

It's a four part miniseries about the 1990 art heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, in Boston. Some major art was stolen, and now it's 2021 and... zippo...
There were some details that we hadn't known about before, but that may just have been us.

All of the episodes were a bit slow, with lots (too many) drawn-out reconstruction photos that just... went on a bit too long.
But there were amazing interviews with some of the real people, both "good guys" and "not so much".

Also a good excuse for some popcorn at home :happy

'Allo 'Allo! This is a very funny British comedy. It focuses on the life of a French café owner who has to deal with German army officers, the French Resistance, a stolen painting, the gestapo, his invalid mother-in-law, a pair of trapped British airmen and others. Funny.
Available on Amazon Prime.

Into second season of Counterpart from Starz on Prime. Actually very good. Combo Sci fi - spy series, universe was split in two decades ago and the series follows the manipulations of one side vs the other, and how and why they turned out to be different.

Sadly it was canceled after 2 seasons. Apparently starz management viewed the show as "too male".

Hemingway, a Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick on PBS. Excellent, as expected from Ken Burns, et al. Recommended.

I’m also reading The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, the Finca Vigia Edition, concurrently.

Frank of Ireland - Amazon

If you like Irish humor, this is a pretty good effort. Its a short series, only 6 episodes and they're all ~22mins long. Follows a dumb and dumber duo of friends as they navigate their ridiculous mid-30s lives. I enjoyed it but its not for everyone.

Made for Love - HBO

Very interesting show about a woman married to a tech mogul who never wants to leave their built in tech bubble home. She escapes and he uses every means required to track her down. Ray Romano really shines as the father in this but all the performances were very good and the concept was very captivating.

World War II in Color on Netflix. It is a fantastic narrated series, in 13 parts, each around 50 minutes. Well worth the commitment.

"Beer and Blood" on Netflix, a turn of the century storyline involving competing beer tent owners at Octoberfest in Munich. (Subtitled). Based on a true story. I liked it, but may be biased as I have spent a day at Octoberfest. There is plenty of Beer and Blood and lots of well crafted sets and costumes.

What’s the focus or approach? Mostly interviews with political and historical authors? A linear list of facts and events or attempt at explaining a perspective of reason for or affects of it????? Just curious.

I may not have this exactly right, but ...

Amazon prime has a habit of scooting you off to another streaming service (e.g. Btritbox) but getting you there as an anonymous user (I think), as opposed to being a subscriber.

If you log on to Britbox directly as a subscriber, Alllo, Allo is free (along with everything else on Britbox -- I think). This is my vaguely understood idea of how it works on Roku.

Ah... this might explain why sometimes we end up being "encouraged" to pay to view something when we are *sure* that we are already subscribed. And indeed, when we try to get back to <whatever> (probably a different way), sure enough, there is no prompt for more money again.

But it's never quite clear what we did "differently"... although we often don't pay a lot of attention to exactly which order we are entering the prompts, etc.

To confuse matters even more, some shows are actually available on different streaming services. This got me confused for a while with the "watch next" capability on must services. They don't know what episodes you have seen on another service.

Also shows may disappear from one service to show up on another.

Yet another confusion: a service may switch a show from free to paid. I think Amazon and Netflix do this.

The first X seasons may be treated differently from the next Y seasons while the services are fighting over the coming Z seasons!

I believe it's all part of streaming services fighting for content and viewers. Maybe things will settle down someday. Right now things are a bit of a mess.

Thanks. Probably it's a bit of "all of the above" going on without us paying specific attention to it usually.

But as for "things settling down"... I doubt it if these little tricks methods end up generating money when otherwise one wouldn't need to pay for that particular episode/etc., at that particular time...

I know I'm a little late here but I just finished The Queen's Gambit a couple weeks ago on Netflix. I'm not really a chess fan but it was a great show that I would recommend and it's a limited series with only 7 episodes so doesn't take that much time to watch the whole thing.

On AcornTV watched “Bloodlands” a four episode series of a police investigation in Northern Ireland. Twenty years after the Peace Agreement the “Troubles” are still very much present. Also on Acorn enjoy “Brokenwood” another police series (7 seasons) but in New Zealand. A small city seems to have an inordinate number of grisly murders.

Wife started watching Desperate Housewives. I have to say, it's quite an interesting show. When it just came out I was too young to appreciate it. Now being married and with kids, it's a lot more relatable.

I really enjoyed many episodes of Grand Designs. I chose to not build a retirement house in no small measure because of watching.

I just watched Season 18 episode 2 Sevenoaks, Kent. It is a tale of grit and determination, love and selflessness. It made me cry (I’m a pushover, but if you aren’t moved by this episode, well, I don’t know).

I can never tell if it’s on Amazon Prime or BritBox. Finding seasons of the show is always difficult, but I’ve watched maybe half of them now.

If you are at all interested in architecture and houses, watch the series. But you don’t need to care a fig about architecture to be move by Season 18, episode 2.

Hugely recommended.
I get the FI part but not the RE part of FIRE.

Watched "The Sinner" Seasons 1 and 2.

Enjoyed both of them. Season 2 explained Harry's issues quite well.

Looking forward to Season 3.

I have binge-watched Criminal Minds thru the middle of Season 11. Netflix has Seasons 1-12, but the series finished in February, 2020 with Season 15. Only 10 episodes in season 15. After a few seasons, gets predictable, but still very well done.

A few nights ago I started watching The Twilight Zone (original series). Kinda interesting seeing so many actors and actresses early in their careers.

Our family definitely followed the LBYMs path, as my father was building his business. No TV for many years, but a well-worn path to the library more than compensated for our lack of the magic box. I still read more hours than I watch TV.

I'm seeing today lots of TV I missed as a youth, without the downside of commercials. Sweet!

I was away from the series for a bit after Mike and Rachel (Duchess Meghan Markle) left the series. I began watching season 8 recently (on my firestick) and discovered that Katherine Heigl (Samantha) was the replacement lawyer for the firm. Currently watching episode 13 of the 16 episode series. I've read that Mike is back for final (10 episode) season 9. I suppose the series has run course so I can't say that I'm disappointed.

Just finished The Serpent on Netflix. About a 70s killer who lived in Thailand and robbed, killed and stole identities of young tourists, and an Dutch embassy individual trying to prove he was doing this due to local police apathy. It starts out kind of slow, but as I stuck with it found it very suspenseful. Inspired by actual events.

I just finished Hannibal season 3 this morning. I will say I liked Season 1 and 3 the best. Season 2 often left me confused between what was reality and what was fantasy and who was dead/alive at any given time. I am admittedly not a huge fan of what I call "artsy" type productions where the plot becomes very cerebral and challenging to follow.

The Good Place with Kristen Bell, Ted Danson and others. At first I really enjoyed it but it has taken several significant turns and I'm only in the 2nd season. I'm not sure I care for some of the "twists" but I can say I'm not sure what will happen next.

For fans of Breaking Bad you will really like Get Shorty (the TV series, not the movie). Although the plot is different -- a mobster trying to take over the movie industry in Los Angeles -- the rhythm and feel of the series is very much like Breaking Bad. It is well acted and has a sense of humor too.
Available on Amazon Prime.

We gave up on it after a few episodes. Can't imitate Elmore Leonard!

Two of my most respected BH posters and I disagree. Oh well, that’s what makes horse races.

I think it is hard to translate a book's plot (a novel) to episodic TV (more like short stories). It worked with Justified but not so well here. Of course Leonard had a lot to do with the Justified TV show.

Years ago, when I lived near DC, I subscribed to the Washington Post. As regards “that’s what makes horse races,” George Will and I differ politically, but he’s an honorable conservative and worth reading. He had a column https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/ ... 12434de07/ that started me reading Elmore Leonard.

Two new excellent cop dramas with foreign female leads here: I just finished a Swedish one called Huss, set in Gothenburg (not sure if available in USA), and have started HBO's Mare of Easttown, starring Kate Winslet as a haggard, Rolling Rock-drinking detective in gloomy SE Pennsylvania.

It’s called Irene Huss in the US, and I think seasons 2 plus are available on Amazon Prime. Season 1 is, I believe, only available on MHz Choice (7 day free trial).
I think you have to sign up for MHz choice in the US. Easy to add on Amazon Prime Video and there’s a free trial. It’s a good steaming service, btw.

We couldn't make it through the first episode.
It definitely had potential, but we were very disappointed in, among other things, the acting, including by Winslet.

I was looking forward to it but the NYT reviewer scorched it.

Ahh, but this is the spinoff - Irene Huss' ambitious daughter:

It's not the cheery Kate we know and love (mind you, she got an Oscar for playing a Nazi). Things get better in episode 2. It has 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wonderful! I liked the original. Now I’ll have to find the spin-off. :D
