Saw a good documentary on YouTube titled “Who is Harry Nilsson? (And why is everybody talkin ‘bout him?). Those of a certain age know exactly who he is and others say Who?… overview of his path from poverty into the epicenter of the LA music scene. He was intensely creative, an exceptional song writer and had a unique vocal style. He also was mercurial, very stubborn and likely Bi- Polar, if my lived experiences with those afflicted are correct.

He also had a much larger catalog of songs that I didn’t realize. If you like documentaries of musicians, this one will hold your attention.

Yeah I also watched that a few days ago.

I remembered a few of his songs, and knew he had composed some hits for others to sing going way back, so thought I'd just watch a little of it since it was a pretty long documentary. But once it got started I got into it and watched it all the way thru.

I didn't know he was so friendly with the Beatles, which of course got me more interested in his full story.

Yes, I didn’t know about his Beatles connections either… Most Beatles fans would likely be interested in this documentary as well.

Having just enjoyed The Beatles: Get Back,

we decided to stay in the past with Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back.
[Note: Do not confuse this title with a horror movie.]

We really enjoyed this, too.
The Dylan piece was much slower paced than the Beatles piece, but both styles worked.
And Don't Look Back was *much* shorter. We would have enjoyed more.

Both provided some very nice memories of our pasts. :happy

So last night, I started out by searching for Meggie Smith's movies. I like her a lot. I watched Ladies in Lavender (stream on tubi for free), starring Meggie Smith and Judi Bench. Two Dames in the same movie!. What a treat!! The movie has such depth. The violin is phenomenal!!!
If you are a fan of both Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench, you should look for "A Room With a View" (1985).
As a bonus, you'll also get early Helena Bonham Carter, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Rupert Graves, along with a host of Brit thespians you might have seen in other roles.

Rebecca (1940)

It was so long ago I first saw this movie it was like seeing it
for the first time when I recently viewed this film. The shadowy,
moody, atmospherics and excellent acting were magical in this
well-known classic.
Accolades to the leads, Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine,
but the strange and eerie housekeeper played by Judith Anderson
was unforgettable.

A very entertaining classic. Mrs. Danvers is wonderfully spooky.

The book, by Daphne du Maurier is also excellent and worth a read. When I read it, I hunted down some other books by her. Her short stories are mesmerizing. Hitchcock also made movies of two other du Maurier stories: The Birds (short story) and Jamacia Inn (atmospheric novel).

The Cheap Detective, on Amazon Prime.

This is a comedy mocking the movies Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon, starring Peter Falk and a dozen other good comedic actors.

Don't Look Up on Netflix streaming. It's a bit over the top in the first half, but I feel like it calms down a bit at the halfway point and gets kind of warm/nostalgic. The end is funny and fitting, don't stop too early (keep watching the colorful credits) or you'll miss it. Overall not perfect but I enjoyed it. Definitely speaks volumes about the present times.

"The Card Counter" on blu-ray from Netflix. Beautifully shot movie and Oscar Issac was great. Some of the dialogue and situations were really awkward, I kept thinking to myself, "No one would say or do that" a number of times. Overall though it was enjoyable, definitely a complex and challenging story.

I watched Jeepers Creepers again this week. I think it's from 2001? Some type of flying demon comes back to a rural area of Florida every 29 years to kill people, take the bodies to his lair, and eventually eat most of them. I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I suspect I need to rewatch Jeepers Creepers 2 again soon, but I don't recall that being as good as the first one.

Don’t Look Up - made it through approx 45 minutes before giving up. I couldnt decide if it was a drama or a comedy - really neither, more of a satire and social commentary, which was more depressing than funny.
I don't think anyone was the target audience for Matrix Resurrections. It's completely bombing at the box office.
I'm the target audience. And unfortunately, the target audience was a lot of the people spending money to see Spiderman 2-3 times. When you have a movie like No Way Home released right in front of you, you're going to get steamrolled.

The other problem is that you had 2 bad sequels and not a lot of fond memories of the trilogy as a whole. Lots of people disliked part 2, most people hated part 3.

I really wanted to like this. I am one of a small minority who liked part 2. Part 3 was pretty bad, but I at least respected and enjoyed the ending. In this one, it was just a pointless exercise of cash grabbing.

Snow White and the Huntsman on Blu-ray DVD, rated PG-13, 2012. A very different twist to the fairy tale. The movie was nominated for 2 Oscars and won several awards. Not bad.

In fairness, the spoiler is all over the Internet. I had no interest in seeing this film and don’t follow Bond stories, but even I knew what the spoiler was. Needless to say, I haven’t watched it.

I like Michael Craig as much as the next guy, but the Bond series has been a movie mess forever. It’s more comedy than anything else.
It's Daniel Craig. Agree, I really like him as an actor in pretty much everything else, but his Bond films (including Casino Royale) have been a mess. No interest in seeing the last iteration.
Claim by TomatoTomahto about not following Bond films checks out.

RM
We don’t follow Bond films either, but we have seen a few over the years. I don’t remember any that were as bad as No Time to Die. DW had heard that there were scenes in Matera, Italy so, having been there on our last trip to Italy, it’s been on our “to watch” list, but not high enough to go to the theater or to pay even $10 to watch it. We paid 68 cents to rent it at RedBox and even that was too much to watch 5 or 10 minutes of Matera as Bond drove around there doing totally unrealistic, physically impossible things. The rest of the movie just continued with totally impossible stunts and people getting shot, except the good guys, in ridiculous shoot outs. After another hour, we gave up. Having to know things from previous Bond films, we didn’t know why Bond would go to a grave site or what Spectre is without an Internet search, made it even worse. Now, we have to bring it back today. We are so done with Bond.

Interesting movie but also disappointing. Unfortunately, they have turned the Soprano franchise into a social justice warrior piece. If this is the future of the franchise, I suspect that many fans will be lost.
Thanks for the heads-up, sounds like I won't be wasting 2hrs of my time.
I should have read this post before I wasted my 2 hours on it today
Thankfully, free DVD from public library so no $ wasted.
The music is very good, to reflect the period. But everything else was meh, blah.

There was one line not well translated in there - the joke about Honecker told by the senior Stasi member at the cafeteria.

“What do Erich Honecker and a telephone have in common?”
“hang up and dial again”

— the German for this (aufhaengen und neuwaehlen) also means, “hang him and hold new elections”. That’s why it’s funny in German - it’s a play on words- and why the others were frightened. But that didn’t come through in the English translation because you can’t capture the dual meaning in English.

The Velvet Vampire

A cheezy, sexy vampire flick from 1971. Viewed on Tubi for free, with commercials. The three stars all had decent careers in Hollywood.

Very watchable, though unrestored and therefore of low resolution most suitable for old TVs. The story is a little too straightforward and it's a little boring at times. I don't recall seeing any velvet either.

Wonderful views of the California desert, a classic Ford Mustang, a dune buggy, and the downtown L.A. bus terminal with 24 brand new, all-glass, full-sized phone booths all in one place. Imagine being able to make or receive a phone call in peace.

The final scene made me laugh out loud. In what is otherwise a pretty professional and competent film, how did that get in there?

Over the last couple of days I watched:

Wolf - not as bad as others have said but definitely a 'weird' movie. Very good acting on part of the leads but a fairly predictable storyline.

Mithcells vs. the Machines - I kept hearing how good this movie was but my first viewing didn't click so I turned it off. On second viewing, it was a really entertaining story that picked up a lot towards the end. It's on Netflix.

Swan Song - Slow but thought provoking story about a dying man replicating himself without his wife's knowledge. Poses some interesting questions and has some excellent performances. Worth seeing on Apple TV

I had two movies that I turned off. First was National Champions. Football movie about star players deciding to hold the college football national championship game hostage unless they're paid. I made it 15mins before turning it off. The second movie was The French Dispatch. I am not a Wes Anderson fan by any means but I have enjoyed some of his films (Moonrise Kingdom comes to mind). This wasn't one I enjoyed. I made it about 20mins in and knew I wasnt going to enjoy it so I turned it off. Might come back to it at a later date.

No Time to Die - Latest Bond. Loved it. I offered to take over from Daniel Craig but the studio lost my email apparently.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye - I'd forgotten a lot of this. A good 80s (lack of) morality play. Well acted. Vincent D'Onofrio in a small but important supporting role.

The French Dispatch - I'm a Wes Anderson fan and I'm looking forward to seeing again at home. I can understand why some people don't enjoy his stuff. Sometimes his movies are just beautiful to look at so good on the big screen.

Pig - Nic Cage. Offbeat and striking. Con Air it ain't!

Edited to include TV -

The Beatles Get Back. Seeing the back and forth was just fascinating. The classics sometimes just emerge from the banter and back and forth. Fascinating.

Rewatched True Detective series 1. Brilliant. Season 2 was such a reversal.

Landscapers - Weird Brit murder drama. Intriguing, but offbeat.

Tick Tick Boom - Musical about the creator of Rent starring Andrew Garfield. We found it very entertaining and well done.

"Child Of God" movie based on the book by Cormac McCarthy

I can't say that I would recommend it. It's a tough watch. If you do watch it - be prepared to see some very offensive behaviors portrayed.

Cormac McCarthys books are a hard read, e.g., The Road, Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, etc., After seeing the movie, it is unlikely I will read the book - "Child of God"

Lester Ballard, a half-mad, backwoods degenerate with no place in polite society in rural Tennessee of the late 1950's to early 1960's.

It portrays some very offensive violent behavior, at least to ms gamboolgal and I. It's a screen versions attempt of showing a mad man's mind - I guess....

Highly unlikely that we will ever watch it again.

Power of the Dog - Watched on Netflix. Great scenery, haunting music and unusual storyline. Benedict Cumberbatch does a convincing job in his role. Recommended if you like quirky films.

I didn't realize it at the time, but Cumberbatch was also in "The Courier", a recent Cold War spy flick based on fact.

And of media I haven't yet watched, he played Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game" and Sherlock Holmes in the TV series "Sherlock".

Both are worth watching in my opinion.

I agree, I found the movie very enjoyable. I was told I would not enjoy it because of my political/religious feelings but I laughed a lot and was moved by the some of the quotes at the end.

Courier was good.

Opening myself to ridicule here, but I enjoy watching documentaries on musical bands. Watched (and enjoyed!) "Raw Spice" on Pluto or Tubi covering the year before The Spice Girls launched. None of them knew each other and showed up for a cattle call audition, quite frankly having no more talent than your local HS Cheer and Pom squad!
The story covers their manager trying to replicate the success of the Boy Bands of 1994 except with 19 YO girls (pre cosmetic surgery) and pop music. It covers the year they all lived together in a cheap flat and spent hours every day learning to sing, harmonize and dance while making almost no money...2 of them pretty street wise, the other 3 from more middle class backgrounds. It all leads up to a "Showcase" where they perform 6 times throughout the day for various music industry executives.
It gets a little repetitive, and not terribly high quality, but over the next 3 years would pump out 12 No 1 UK hits starting with "I Really Really Want..."
Good little twist of fate at the end too that made me laugh.

Thanks!

Having just watched similar videos of a couple of other groups, we just watched this.
We were especially intrigued by your mention that the Spice Girls not only didn't know each other before, but they didn't even have much experience with singing or dancing.

"A little repetitive" is perhaps an understatement, but it was fascinating nevertheless.

DH had been intrigued enough to quickly find another video of an early performance of theirs in Istanbul, not all that much later.
Watching that meant so much more, knowing some of that background.

I found it to be a shaggy first cousin of “Dr. Strangelove”. Could have had a wee bit of editing, but an enjoyable ride.

"Find Me" on Vudu (free with ads): "An emotionally wounded accountant decides to break away from routine and find his missing friend, who has left clues for him of her whereabouts throughout National Parks across the West." I really enjoyed this movie. Good acting and characters I connected with. It moves at a slow pace but has some beautiful scenery throughout that makes me want to fly out to the southwest and California to go hiking. Best of all for me - no car chases, guns battles, rapes, murders, assaults.

I have also been on an Everest/ mountain climbing binge and thanks to recommendations here, watched "14 Peaks" and "The Alpinist" on Netflix. Loved the latter but the former felt like it tried to cover too much territory in such restricted time frame, but still enjoyed it.

Wanting more freezing cold, terrifying heights, I started to watch "The Summit of the Gods" on Netflix as well, but stopped briefly when I realized it was an animated movie - about a journalist wanting to find George Mallory's camera to see if he actually made it to the summit or not. Thankfully, I decided to keep watching and loved it. Really good animation with some heart-in-my-throat climbing scenes.

Thanks for commenting! What is also an aspect for me is that 3 of them parlayed the SG persona's to become famous in different ways- Mel B is "known" among my adult kids and Posh went on to marry Beckham and launch some sucessful fashion projects, as well as keep numerous Plastic Surgeons in nice neighborhoods. Ginger fell off my radar, until she showed up in one of my other "hobbies" - Formula 1, when the former Geri Halliwell married Christian Horner, who is the Team Principal for Red Bull Racing whose teams driver just won the "forever controversial" 2021 World Drivers Championship in Abu Dhabi last month. Ginger was there to celebrate with her husband... and still has the same photogenic smile she had as a Spice Girl.
