Save your money.
I have not seen No Time to Die but yours is not the first very negative review I've read. Based on those I have no plans to see it -- not even when it hits streaming.

This saddens me as Bond has been perhaps my favorite movie franchise since the early '60s (almost 6 decades!). Now, apparently, it has been ruined - even destroyed. The Daniel Craig era started out with such promise (Casino Royale) but has been on an ever more rapid decline since then. Seems like it took the final fall with the latest. I just don't want to watch. It might be the first Bond movie I cry at.

My favorite is From Russia With Love. The whole movie really nailed it. Robert Shaw was great and this was long before Jaws.
I really like Daniel Craig as an actor, most everything outside of James Bond that he has been is has been great so I'm confused as to why his Bond movies have been so mediocre (from really bad to just OK). Didn't bother to see the last one, doubt I'll see this one. My grandfather learned English partly from watching James Bond movies on VHS over and over again in the 80's, and I have fond memories of watching them with him. Sad to see such an iconic character and series just deteriorate.

A different opinion for sure, but I was very entertained by No Time to Die. It wasn't Casino Royale (which I really liked), and it certainly has some plot holes, but I was entertained which is exactly why I go to the movies. It also has almost a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes which, for me, is usually a very good barometer of whether I'll like something. I have read a lot of positive reviews as well.

Me too. I remember way back when as some new Bond movie came out I read a very negative review which included the revelation that it was bad, like all the other Bond movies. That's all I needed to hear! I eagerly went to the theater as soon as possible and I don't remember being disappointed.

Given the mention of Debra Winger in previous posts, you may want to look at Kajillionaire (2020). We watched it months ago and I remembered it in that context.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/24/movi ... eview.html

It appears initially to be a small-scale heist comedy but is more in the nature of a coming-of-age story for the main character, played by Evan Rachel Wood. A word: if you don't want to be spoiled ahead of watching the film -- there are some antics prominently featured in the trailer -- avoid the trailer embedded in the NYT review.

Acton without suspense is just noise and visual clutter.
One of the films on my watch list is Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder" (1954). It's sort of the polar opposite of what you're describing. The entire story takes place on one set, mostly in one room. It's just people talking. No action. None of Hitchcock's trademark chase scenes. Yet the film is a suspense thriller. I'll be interested to see how Hitchcock keeps up the suspense in a single room. He reportedly used a wide variety of camera angles and a darkening of Grace Kelley's wardrobe as the plot thickens among other things.
Incorrect, there is action, shocking action. Perhaps just in one scene but it’s definitely there.

Another thing is that I had no idea the movie was so long. It moved very quickly and did not feel like it dragged at all. I suggest that anyone who is a Bond fan go see it and form your own opinion. Everyone I know who has seen it really liked it.

Fear Street Trilogy. Man With No Name Trilogy. Nightmare on Elm Street.

Good stuff.

Netflix added some horror film documentaries. I watched the Nightmare one. Now, it's not as good as the 4 hour long one, but it still has its moments.

I'll watch Cry Macho tomorrow and Dune next week.

Johnny Got His Gun. 1971.

A good movie but it can be depressing and emotional at times.

It was good! Turns out to be based on a poem by Nobel prize winner Harry Martinson. Very moody, “slow SF.” Thought I caught a couple of homages to Tarkovsky’s Solaris (almost-duplicate of opening shot of Solaris shows up briefly at one point, and the big round windows from the Solaris station seem to be referenced in one place.)

Recommended for those who liked Solaris (Tarkovsky’s version, not Soderbergh’s short-attention-span version), Arrival, or Blade Runner 2049.
Solaris on DVD, rated PG-13, 2002, George Clooney, directed by Steven Soderbergh. A psychologist investigates weird crew behavior on a space station.

This is the Soderbergh short-attention-span version because I couldn't the 1972 version for free on Amazon Prime (or Netflix). How bad could it be? Bad. It was simply boring. I slept through some of it and didn't miss anything. I didn't watch the original version, but it has to be better than this.

If you want a sci-fi movie that tells the story of a crew's travel through space, I recommend Europa Report.

We both really like this film, for a variety of reasons, and Jeff Bridges and Joan Allen are two of the big ones. They both got Academy Awards nominations (among others) for this movie.

The Addams Family 2 (at a drive-in theater!). It held my attention, but too many of the characters didn't really do anything. Wednesday was portrayed as too nihilistic, I think. Mediocre.

Forbidden Planet. Classic 1956 Sci-Fi with Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pigeon, and "Robbie, The Robot" (with a comma). I'd caught bits of it over the years and didn't think much of it, but it was pretty impressive when seen in one viewing. Chock full of ideas and special effects.

Just watched "The Courier" (2020) ..already recommended several times in this thread.

I had the unfortunate timing of reading an absolutely gripping true story, "The Spy and the Traitor" by Ben Macintyre shortly before seeing this film, so this film seemed a bit lightweight by comparison (even though they deal with completely different espionage stories). But it is a good film.

Part of the lightweight feeling is that the film focuses on an average guy -- a businessman -- who simply acts as a conduit between a Soviet GRU officer and Western intelligence. The "courier" doesn't have any real, vested interest in what he is doing. We don't get the more interesting (IMO) inner-turmoil-and-paranoia - perspective of a Soviet officer who decides to commit treason. We also don't get a sense of the amount and quality of the intelligence being passed to the West. Heavy drama did come in the second half, however, and we learn how the intelligence helped potentially avert a nuclear crisis. Recommended.

"The Painted Veil" (2006), a romantic drama starring Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. The period film was shot in China, with the stunningly beautiful Guilin as the backdrop for the opening scenes. Watched it on Hoopla (which is accessible through a participating library, if yours is one):

"No Time To Die" only gets 1 star from me!
Long-time Bond fan. Enjoyed the last 4 movies (even Quantum of Solace), but this one went in a new direction.
Best part of Bond was generally knowing the Formula, and settling in to see what wild new ride the next installment would take you on.
Unfortunately, appears to be a new Formula, and 007 may never be the same.
Movie would have been a lot more fun/interesting if Nomi's character/personality was more like Paloma's.
Bond's interaction with Paloma was great, and they teamed up for the best action scene by far. Paloma's role was disappointingly small.
Agree regarding the ending -that sealed it for me. Bad movie. Over-hyped for what it is.

The Scarlet Claw, on YouTube.

This 1944 Sherlock Holmes movie stars Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. A spectral monster roams the marshes near a small village in Canada, tearing the throats of sheep of sheep and now humans.

Not based on any Conan Doyle story. Recommended.

Last Man Down - A post-apocalyptic action film about a soldier seeking revenge for his wife’s death during a pandemic.

On the Dud scale, ms gamboolgal and I give this a high 8 to 9 out of 10.

Do not recommend. It was beyond bad.

Apple Movies - got me good on this one :annoyed

However, ms gamboolgal and I hung in there and endeavored to persevere until mercifully the end came....

Just got done watching Dune on HBOMax. It is a movie clearly made for the big screen. I still enjoyed it on my TV but man it must be glorious on the big screen.

My first impression was: this is a mature Star Wars. After I was done watching, I read a quote from the director where he says, "In a way, it's Star Wars for adults." Yep.

The music is great, the cinematography is stupendous, the effects are seamless. Imagine the hokey stuff from the first Star Wars taken out, and then crossed with Scott's Gladiator. Out comes Dune.

But the movie felt a little long. It was as if Villeneuve knew he had time to burn, so he did. Unshackled by the burden that Lynch claimed ruined his version (got cut by the studio), Villeneuve makes sure to use all 155 minutes. And sometimes, it drags. We barely see any of the Chani character, despite her being prominent in the trailer and posters. Oh well, I guess it is a set up for part 2, coming in probably a few years...

Well said. I saw this in the theater and it's epic! A perfect setup for part 2. I was so immersed in the lore and world building that the time flew by for me.

If you're into a lot of mindless action and witty lines every 5 minutes(Marvel) and have a short attention span, this movie is not for you.

See this in the theater! It's glorious in the theater.

Beetljuice, at a drive-in movie theater.

This is a comedy/ghost story starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keeton and Winona Ryder. A young couple dies in an auto accident, their home in a peaceful small town is bought by an obnoxious New York couple and their strange daughter. Their ghosts haunt the house trying to drive the invaders away.

This is not ordinarily my kind of film, but perhaps I have misjudged it. I don’t mind witty lines, nor sensible action, but usually these films are inane. It’s on HBOMax, so I think I’ll give it a try this weekend.

My home theater has, in small scale, better sound (immersive) and video than the theater. The recliners are more comfortable. And I get to watch with my wife and dogs, take a bio break, set the volume to my liking, etc. :D [OT comment removed by moderator oldcomputerguy] I never liked theaters that much anyway, and I don’t match their target demographic.
I get the FI part but not the RE part of FIRE.

"The White Tiger", a really good movie set in India. It deals with themes of corruption, the caste system and the relationship of a servant with his employer.

"Ella Fitzgerald Just One of Those Things", a documentary of her life and music. If you are a fan of Ella Fitzgerald and if you like jazz, swing, be-bop or scat singing then you should definitely not miss this film.

"Stowaway". It is about a mission to Mars that finds a stowaway on board, and the problems that presents. It starts out slow (If you can call escaping from Earth's gravity in a rocket slow.) But gradually the tension builds. Though the film takes place on a spacecraft, it is not really a scifi movie.

"The Guilty" very intense. Excellent movie.

"Catch Me If You Can" Entertaining. The film is based on the autobiography of a man who successfully impersonated a Pan American World Airways pilot, a doctor, and a Louisiana prosecutor.

Twelve

A Russian language movie with subtitles that is an adaptation of Twelve Angry Men. Set in post soviet Moscow. 12 Russians from all walks of life decide the fate of a young Chechen accused of murder. Cross Henry Fonda with Fyodor Dostoyevsky and this is what you get. Brilliant look at modern Russian society.

Infernal Affairs (2002) (imbd.com).

Years ago I watched the 2006 Scorsese remake The Departed -- and enjoyed the particularly twisted plot, but until recently I'd never seen the original Hong Kong production. If you enjoy crime thrillers and missed these, strong recommendation.

"A Few Good Men" (1992) w/ Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore. "Military lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee defends Marines accused of murder. They contend they were acting under orders."

Despite an accomplished cast, the film was unexciting. Cruise's character was stereotypical and over-the-top. The courtroom scenes were not emotionally engaging. The whole thing just seemed flat. Maybe a B- or C+. Nothing really offensive but nothing really exciting either.

After reading Roger Ebert's review, I see what was wrong. There is no suspense in the courtroom scenes because Tom Cruise's character previews his courtroom strategy to his friends, robbing the viewer of what would have been the key suspenseful moment in the film.

That's a pretty obvious lesson about suspense: Don't give spoilers to your viewers!

I'll add that there's a saying that having Catherine Deneueve in a (French) movie makes it a better movie. I disagree. Some of the worst movies I've seen have her in the cast. But I do think it's true that having Jack Nicholson in a movie makes it a better movie. Without Nicholson in "A Few Good Men", it would truly be a snoozer.

"The Statement" on Amazon Video.

Michael Caine plays Pierre Brossard, a French collaborator with the Nazis during the Vichy regime.

Tilda Swinton is the French judge who is trying to bring him to justice (in the 90s, I would guess).

I enjoyed it! Most of the actors, especially the stars, are all VERY British, but playing French characters, so I had to suspend some disbelief on that score. Once I did that, I loved the acting, and the fantastic scenery of various parts of France. Good story, with some surprises.

The movie was based on the novel, "The Statement", by Brian Moore, who also wrote the novel "Black Robe", which was made into one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. In both "The Statement" and "Black Robe" the Catholic Church plays a major, and not positive, part.

Highly recommended.

A third recommendation for River Runner. Kind of reminded me of Free Solo, but in a kayak on outrageous rapids.

No Time to Die. Pretty good James Bond movie - lots of action , only thing why so long 2:30, they could of cut at least 30 minutes but no complaints.

The Wrong Man (1956), with Henry Fonda. Another oldie - I enjoyed it.

+ 1...and with him announcing his "retirement from acting" at 88YO, a nice tribute to his talents.

EDITED TO HIDE SPOILER:
(You can hover or copy/paste/etc., if you simply *must* know in advance, but it seems to be a major spoiler.)

Unless maybe they didn't??
:confused

I have no idea. We don't watch these, but the spoiler problem hit me straightaway, too.

Halloween Kills 🎃. This movie received so so reviews but I liked it. It's pretty much what you'd expect from the Halloween movie series. Grizzly killings, elusive Michael Myers and plenty of suspense. Supposedly, the next installment, Halloween Ends will be the last movie.
