To make you feel better, I lumped about 75k in on Friday. Another 50k being added today. Will do another 50k whenever we have drops like today. RBD's give me something to do. I don't think they move the needle much but tossing some excess funds into equities feels good.Cautionary Tale wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 12:40 pm Alright. ..those of you who lump summed on Friday, we want to hear your story. Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
After maxing retirement accounts past 4 years, finally got to the point where I was ready to start a taxable brokerage with excess cash (had been watching the cash build and build and finally had the courage to do something with it; got a $20K inheritance last month). Started that account w/ $25K last Tuesday. 62% Total US Stock VTI, 15% Total Int VXUS, and 23% Total Bond BND. Down 2.2% overall on my $25K investment. I sold $500 of BND today and bought VTI and VXUS just to make myself feel better (BND now at 20% of taxable brokerage). Taxable brokerage only represents 2.7% of my overall net worth, but "feels" different because it's not "locked" away in retirement accounts (I'm late 30s). I have no temptation to sell stock. The temptation is to sell even more BND and buy VTI. I will resist and stay the course.mtmingus wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 12:43 pmI did buy some (not lump sum) on Friday last week. Forester just stated that we need to buy the dip and we will be rewarded with new highs. Now I'm really worried. This could be bad!

Not that I plan to do anything about it, but it is one perspective on what is going on.

yet, yellow lights continue to flash brightly. the Shiller P/E ratio, which compares the price of the S&P 500 to the average inflation-adjusted earnings over the previous 10 years, currently sits at 38. Non adjusted it's north of 45. Prior to this time, the Shiller P/E has only exceeded 35 once in history: right before the dot-com bubble popped and the market crashed in 2000. perhaps market fundamentals no longer matter. time will tell.

Well, true to form he did state that there will be a liquidity crisis soon after so all is not lost.

The news says this is because of the delta variant. But it's not like this variant appeared over the weekend. Is the idea that some big chunk of the market discovered it over the weekend?
I think all sellers should be required to enter a reason why they are selling when they submit the order. Then we might know.

Ever since I sold out my funny money Disney stock allocation I regretted it. link I was going to bite the bullet and buy back in at a higher price, but felt too foolish doing so. Today, Disney dipped a little past the point I sold it, so I bought back in.
This time...gonna hang on to my Disney with steel claws.
Edit: Note to self, on July 12th the headline was, "JPMorgan reiterates Disney as a top pick, says stock can jump 24% as theme parks, movies bounce back".

Just clicked on a buy order for some more VTSAX (holding antacid in other hand )
Days like this it feels good to have a bunch of bond funds, too. The last few months have been FOMO watching equities go up, up, and up.

what's the underlying reason? an almost 10% drop in the 10y yield with no announcements from the fed or treasury?Marseille07 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 1:53 pmPeople just buying bonds like crazy, regardless of inflation concerns. Risk-off.

The yield dropping is an outcome of people buying up bonds...not the cause. S&P 500 closed much stronger than the lows of the day.
Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
With regards to today's decline in equity prices, here is what I think is quite an astute commentary regarding market volatility as it related to hedging of large option positions. Although I don't think that technical factors drive the stock market in the long run, delta hedging, systematic/vol control strategies, or rebalancing have potential to be significant short term volatility factors.

I see days like this and I can only remember how naive I was in my younger investing years. These days I just laugh. Cue the 400 pt day in a few days to a week, followed by some noise to get back to even a couple weeks after that and new ATHs again after.

Spy hit the 50 day moving average and bounced up and then finished on strength. I'm a buyer today.
Joking. I moved money from BND to SPY and VXUS on my planned schedule to compensate for new contribution to my SV fund that hit Friday.
It was good and also scary to make a purchase when the market wasn't at ATHs. So I hate it when the market drops and I hate it when the market rises! TINA baby.
