We don’t actually have to buy the stocks to enter this, right? We can just make predictions for purposes of the contest?

Having finished 84th out of 89 entries in 2021, I've got some work to do to retain my 5-star Morningstar rating.

I hereby rename my fund the Anti-Momentum Fund, to outrun the bad publicity from my 2021 results. I will go long on the three worst-performing stocks in the S&P500 in 2021, and short the three best-performing stocks of the same index.

From Tanelorn's original post, here's the Russell 3000 Index membership list (as of 28 June 2021):

The returns for the contest are based on the opening and closing prices, which do not include any dividends that might have been paid. Keeping track of dividends is a lot of trouble and the free websites' data are often unreliable (I have enough trouble hassling my brokers for real dividends I should have been paid but wasn't; happens more than you might think). So sadly, your returns won't reflect any dividends paid, but if the stock price appreciates anyway, you'll see that in your contest performance.

Thanks for the encouragement. Perhaps next year I will emphasize more strongly to participants to make sure you find your stock in the Russell 3000 List before posting your fund. I mean, it's good to have more people playing, but it would be better if they followed the rules a bit more often :).

My less than stellar performance in this hedge fund contest is only rivaled by my dismal performance in the stock market contest.

I see that VTI was the benchmark for the 2021 contest.

Why not use a fund based on the Russell 3000 as the benchmark, as that is the universe we are picking stocks from?

I propose that VTHR be used as the benchmark. It is an investable Vanguard ETF, expense ratio 0.1%.

I propose keeping VTI. It's been the baseline benchmark since the contest started. We'll be able to do apples-to-apples comparisons across years.

It's the same reason why the market still uses the Dow Jones Industrial Average. 30 stocks do not comprise the market. The index has been around so long, it's valued for it's historical pricing. From: Dow Jones Averages - Indices | S&P Dow Jones Indices
Introduced in May 1896, the Dow Jones Industrial Average® is a world-renowned gauge of the U.S. equity market. The index covers all industries with the exception of transportation and utilities, which are covered by the Dow Jones Transportation Average and Dow Jones Utility Average.
