Copying high govt officials for investing
Copying high govt officials for investing
I heard that some high govt officials have to publicize their stock selling/buying to the public and since these guys have more info than us commoners, cant I simply sell when they sell and buy when they buy?
Re: Copying high govt officials for investing
I read an article about a service that aggregated insider buying and selling activity and removed the noise. It was about how difficult it is to prosecute insider trading. I read it on Bloomberg. I'm an indexer at heart, so this isn't for me. But I can see people gambling with it.

Apparently that's popular with the TikTok crowd

Between the delay before whatever disclosures they make are made public, and the apparently avid following already following that strategy, I'm skeptical of the results.

Seems like its only 2 days... maybe 2 days is like an eternity in a single stock

There’s a blog

And websites for the house and senate. I haven’t paid any attention to these but saw them posted elsewhere.

I remember reading some time ago that former Fed chairman Ben Bernanke's portfolio was largely with TIAA, from his time at Princeton, and was split 50/50 between TIAA Traditional and CREF Stock. That's basically what I have, although when I started in the mid '80s I didn't know about Bernanke, so I can't say I "copied" him.

He probably copied YOU!22twain wrote: ↑Sat Oct 16, 2021 11:21 pm I remember reading some time ago that former Fed chairman Ben Bernanke's portfolio was largely with TIAA, from his time at Princeton, and was split 50/50 between TIAA Traditional and CREF Stock. BTW, how does he know of you?
And you don't have to be a "high govt official" to be subject to financial reporting laws. I think anyone in elected office (even dog catcher) or volunteers on city commissions need to file.

Varying by state, in VA, financial disclosure is required for a wide variety of folks:

This includes local and state citizen advisory boards. The information is public.

Re: Copying high govt officials for investing
Given the investment blunders I've seen of others in "top tier" occupations, this seems like a great way to lose a lot of money.
I get the idea is that they have insider info, but I'd still put my money on buying and holding indexes.

This personal investing so you have to figure out your personal portfolio using index funds.
Invest when you have the money, sell when you need the money, for real life expenses...
Re: Copying high govt officials for investing
This varies by state, actually. Legislators in Michigan, for example, do not have any financial disclosure requirements (which is crazy imho).
