Jeopardy champ Matt Amodio's investment plans

Post by jpsfranks »

Recently defeated Jeopardy champ Matt Amodio appeared on CNBC after the conclusion of his 38 day run, and was asked what he planned to do with his earnings. His answer: index funds, some bonds, and rebalancing. Sounds like a Boglehead. Of course Jim Cramer chimed in encouraging him to be more aggressive.

Hopefully enough to still get a nice transfer bonus at the brokerage of his choice!

Federal taxes + California taxes + local taxes probably in the neighborhood of 50%!

Well, he is pretty young, and will soon have a PhD in Computer Science. Plus he'll always have a career in TV from here on out, if he so chooses.

So Cramer's advice might not be too bad.

If he’s rich or poor, this will get locked. We might get lucky if he’s in between.

It is reckless to invest that way. Have you seen how expensive bonds are right now?

Why would this not get locked?

Amodio is correct on the index funds and that's very bogleheaded. But if you consider the taxes he might not have pocketed much more than 800k. I'd probably apply some leverage to a balanced portfolio and go 120/120. Depends on how much he expects to make in the future. Winning Jeopardy 38 times and a PhD could make his future expected earnings quite high, which would argue for a more aggressive allocation today. And a life insurance and disability policy.
