Alternatives for HNW with Equi

Post by rolandtorres »

Read about this startup today providing access to Alts for HNW investsors. Are there other ways for HNW investors to access alts in a convenient fund of funds manner as this appears to be? Seems like they offer access to funds with $200-500M in assets to try to find a sweet spot, but I still can't help but feel I'd be the "dumb money" putting in money to alts in this way.

Looks like they are all hype and marketing.

The linkedin.com profile for their founder, Tory Reiss, https://www.linkedin.com/in/toryreiss indicates he is all about recruiting and sales.

Seems like a typical con job, promise anything and everything to get someone's money.

They want investors to signup for "Early Access". I guess they want pioneers who are ready to lose their money on vapor promises.

A google check for Tory Reiss also identified an arrest for drug sales while he was in college https://evanstonnow.com/evanston-police ... ar-campus/ Mug shot from newspaper article seems to agree with Equi.com CEO profile photo

No sign of any registration or relationship to FINRA or SEC apparent on equi.com website as far as I could see. I guess I'm not surprised.

That was some seriously impressive Google-fu!

Any "alt investment" sold to random people on the internet are the leftovers that none of the really rich/connected/sophisticated investors wanted.

And even the "sophisticated" investors, in many cases, don't beat indexing. See this old post for some references:

They mentioned "0.0001%" averages 8-12% return a year in the last 20yr. But one can achieve 8% from 2001 to 2021 with SP500 w/o paying high fees to someone else. Not sure what they can bring to the table. Crunchbase indicate they're a small startup with limited resources so highly doubt they'll be able to provide better return. But one never knows...

One guy made 12% per year for decades.
Then he got caught and died in prison.

In all seriousness, I do not believe there is any magic in hedge funds (which as a whole underperform the markets) or other alts. There are already companies that will package alt investments at the fund of funds levels. They must be better because you pay two sets of outrageous fees!

Try a simple 2-4 index fund portfolio at single digit basis point expenses and tax efficient management.
