Tell me about it: I tried that last year ;)

Maybe I was just off by one year though.

Both of your choices are not in the Russell 3000 universe. Snap Inc (SNAP) has a dual share class structure that is currently prohibited, while Unity Software (U) is too new as the IPO happened in Sept'20 and our universe is based on June 2020's list. Feel free to submit new choices, long or short.

For FTI, did you mean for FTI to be Technip FMC (NYSE:FTI) the french oil company or FTI Consulting (NYSE:FCN), the financial advisory company? The oil company is not in Russell (foreign based), while the consulting one is fine but has a different ticker than you listed. Let me know and/or pick a replacement 3rd long.

Camp Shore - I would encourage you to choose a slightly difference fund given that exact one (just long TSLA) was already chosen. Perhaps you can outperform your rival with a well chosen long or short pick in addition?

I would normally not allow duplicate entries in the contest since it seemed like copying, but I’m sure in the case you had no such intent and it’s quite a popular stock. In the case it matters in terms of final ranking, I would break ties in favor of the first one to post their fund.

Note that if either of us sells at some point there is likely to be a difference in performance.

If a single other fund is picked, you would only be weight TSLA at 50%?

Good point about selling at different times. Last year not one of the concentrated TSLA longs held on for the 5x gains.

Yes, all stocks are equally weighted so if you have two picks, each would be 50%.

This is just a reminder, but tomorrow Monday 1/11 is the last day to post your fund entries. Please try to do so by the morning, although since we're using the closing price on Monday to start the contest, technically you'll have until 4pm ET to enter. Don't wait til the last minute.

For everyone above, please try to respond to the corrections I noticed above. If you check your stock tickers against the Russell list in the OP, you won't run into these issues :)

Yes, to close a position just post here which one and you’ll sell, or your short covered, at the next market closing price (4pm ET) after your post.

Tanelorn Capital: Better Lucky Than Good
Our concentrated portfolios are designed to debunk that myth that short selling is risky and remind potential investors that no matter how cheap a stock is, there is always 100% to be made on the way to zero.

Short:
CHK (now CHKAQ) - Chesapeake Energy Corp (last price $4.30)

Despite the 300% rise YTD for the stock, we are bearish on the prospects of this heavily indebted energy company and look forward to entering our short position at Monday's close. We know some may take issue with our unusual approach so we also offer a more diversified short-bias alternative portfolio for those seeking a more conservative approach to short selling:

Short:
REV - Revlon Inc
AMC - AMC Entertainment Holdings
EXPR - Express Inc

All that said, the market conditions for the past 9 months have been very very unfavorable to short selling and it's unclear this will change for 2021, so we have a fair bit less confidence in our short basket this year than in previous ones. We're still trying to forget last year's basket, although our main pick did great (sign of the times when +100% for your short didn't make it to the top 5 of the rankings). And a tip of our hat to the longs choosing MSTR as a crypto bet - not our style, but a respectable choice indeed.

Best of luck everyone and don't forget to post your picks and/or corrections by 4pm ET today.

No, I’m entering the first (short CHK), but some people like to see more diversified shorting results so I include the second as an informal alternative. It doesn’t appear in the contest rankings.

We foresee weakness in transportation during 2021.

Ye Olde, Ancient and True Farmers Almanac predicts rainfall on several occasions during the year. As we all know, it's impossible to find a cab when it rains, so this is truly ominous for that sector.

As Nostradamus clearly wrote in 1555 (in French), "the plague will not cease" and "the city will be destroyed." Both will be bad for leisure travel.

Raymond - I'm sorry PDLI isn't trading anymore. It's a long complicated story, but the short version is the stock's last trading day was the end of 2020 and it's is now a liquidating trust which doesn't trade and we won't know what it's worth until years from now. So it's not eligible anymore as a pick and I removed just that one from your lineup. Bad luck with your random method to pick such a weird situation!
