Why no Latin America?TheoLeo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 3:49 pm Lets hope europe has a great year. On monday I changed my allocation from 60 % US/40 % Europe to 70 % european value stocks and 30 % cash. It is market timing and it might backfire.
What is interesting about the comparison of european vs US stocks is that growth stocks are even more expensive in Europe but value stocks are even cheaper in Europe than in the US. So I bought the cheapest of the cheap, the stocks that really nobody wants to touch. What can go wrong.

Does it also count as “soaring” if ex-US is mostly flat while the US is down over 5% YTD?

Yes it better count! I’ll take anything at this point…bogledogle87 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 7:28 pm Does it also count as “soaring” if ex-US is mostly flat while the US is down over 5% YTD?
Re: ex-US Stocks Continue to Soar!
I think ex-US has either tied or beaten US every single day YTD
Re: ex-US Stocks Continue to Soar!
It's the only ETFs whose limit order have stayed unfilled yet. I need ex-US to drop ~2% for my limit orders to go through
My orders for VNQ, IJS, VTI have all been filled.

Whose bingo card had a 5% lead after 20 days in 2022?
It just shows how quickly things can turn. If you’re not already diversified, it could be pretty difficult to read signals like this on how to properly respond.
None of this will change my own allocation, but I find myself rooting for this just to read headlines, new posts, and commentary for entertainment purposes.

All those 100% US stock people won’t be so happy when they’re down 2% CAGR over the next decade while we ex-USers keep chugging along at 0%!

Emerging markets are up YTD. Is it finally EM’s time to shine? They don’t seem like they can possibly get cheaper.

I'm underweight EM compared to my desired allocation due to the large percentage of my portfolio being in the Thrift Savings Plan I'm hoping that EM making a run of it will wait until after the TSP Mutual Fund Window is available. That way, I will be fully invested to my desired EM allocation.thenextguy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 8:53 pm Emerging markets are up YTD. Is it finally EM’s time to shine? They're down 4% for the year and are also down over the last six months and one year. There's no soaring.
More like they're not sucking as bad as U.S. over the last three weeks.

The total EM market is up about 5% depending on the index. Hopefully the Russia sanctions will continue to benefit other EM countries.

Re: ex-US Stocks Continue to Soar!
That's true with all markets. When retired I plan to maintain a 50% bonds/40% stocks/10% cash allocation. That's seems like a good all weather approach.colddeadfish wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 3:22 pmYes, I've noticed over the years that VXUS has really large moves (up and down) so its difficult to time. Better to be in or out of ex-US and leave it alone.

Assets are moving into China and other EM countries which are expected to fill the void left by Russia. This could also apply to some developed ex-US markets.

I don't know what you're celebrating. AVEM is still lower than 2/23/22 right before Russia invaded Ukraine. Meanwhile, S&P500 is now higher than 2/23/22. The Russian equities getting wiped out and Russia getting sanctioned are net negative for EM, not positive.
Re: ex-US Stocks Continue to Soar!
AVEM is only about 0.01% Russia allocation, so the effect is inconsequential. Maybe this is just the beginning of an EM surge. I don't know, but if it is I'll reap the benefits since I'm allocated in EM markets. If it isn't I'll still be OK since I'm globally diversified. In other words, global diversification means I'll likely be fine regardless of what happens.Marseille07 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 11:03 pmI don't know what you're celebrating. Re: ex-US Stocks Continue to Soar!
ex-US investing is merely a hedge against a weak dollar and nothing more. Despite its much lower valuation, it continues to fall just as much as US equities and it rebounds much slower.

You take your wins where you can get ‘em I guess. Since my entire rationale for holding non-US is that I don’t know which will do better I don’t really care what ends up happening, but it’s fun to occasionally reap some emotional benefit. Satisfied with the process regardless of outcome.sweetness9 wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 5:28 pmFor the moment, VXUS is -14% YTD v. -19% for VTI. Pretty good (relatively speaking) so far this year -- VTIAX (Vanguard Total International Stock Index) is down 13.81% YTD, which compares favorably to VTSAX (Vanguard Total Stock Market Index), which is down 18.88%.

What's interesting is International is actually back at pre-covid level (early 2020) price, while US is still about 10% above pre-covid level.... so technically US is still winning in my books .WestCoastPhan wrote: ↑Sat May 21, 2022 12:15 am Pretty good (relatively speaking) so far this year -- VTIAX (Vanguard Total International Stock Index) is down 13.81% YTD, which compares favorably to VTSAX (Vanguard Total Stock Market Index), which is down 18.88%.
