U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Most of them aren’t getting rich quickly, they just think they are. Most of that money will eventually flow into the pockets of people on this board who sit… patiently… and wait. And once it goes into our pockets, it’s Hotel California time: it won’t ever leave until most of us drop dead.Bwlonge wrote: ↑Tue Oct 26, 2021 10:56 am
Thanks for the reminder. I tried picking stocks for a while, had solid information and those stocks are now doing well but with a lot of volatility. I still managed to lose money on them. I'm coming back to passive investing because the hype around investing just isn't for me. It's still very hard knowing people are getting rich quickly while I am not.
There’s a reason index investors out perform 80%+ of active managers, because in the *long run* it comes out on top. It matters not who is ahead now, it matters who is ahead in 20 or 30 years. Fairly confident, we indexers will win against stock pickers who are riddled with so many behavior problems, they probably need a full time psychologist as apart of their financial “team”.
Even TSLA share holders, on some level, I almost feel bad for them. Many have such huge capital gains, most can’t bear to sell, which will likely and ultimately doom them. Maybe not in 1 year, or even 5…. but eventually. At the very least, it’s not anything you can plan a retirement around, which makes it sort of pointless gains. What good is it if you can’t multiply it by a SWR and spend it? In other words, index funds are more valuable to me as they enable financial freedom, unicorn stocks don’t do much but enable your ego — and not in a good way.

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
The Home Depot and Walmart result did not catch me by surprise, like it apparently did the market today. I live in suburban/exburban Florida and Home Depot/Lowes and Walmart/Target are packed at all hours of the day, as is the mall. It certainly doesn't look like we'll have stagflation barring some unforeseen event.

This is the part I don't get. I don't know why this is hard. I just don't pay attention to other people. Why would I?
Yes, I know some Bogleheads are 100/0 and doing pretty well with that, but I have no idea if they're ahead of me or behind me in the big picture, and I don't care. Why would I?

I find it easier to stick with assets that have underperformed, so I actually give myself more credit for sticking with U.S. total market/S&P 500 after such a long period of outperformance compared to international and small cap value.
I'm far more tempted (and still not very tempted at all) to add more international or some small cap value in place of some of my U.S. total market or S&P 500 funds than I am to dump international for more U.S.
But, I stay the course.

No testing here. Just viewing historical information, no different than looking at home run leaders in a decade or who led the NBA in scoring in any given year.
The point is, assets that perform poorly in some periods have performed well in others. But one actually needs to acknowledge those periods in order to see these facts.

I really do like VBIAX, it’s done well for my mom. And I was serious about sticking with an underperforming asset. Im not sure what’s so negative about that? If you go with a strategy and bail halfway through then it’s probably not a good idea to go down that path. If you believe international will outperform, but bail before that happens then in my opinion that’s worse than going all US. And I’m sure there are people who’ve done just that.HanSolo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:56 pmRIVN is no TSLA. They have a long way to go before catching up (if that's even possible). Getting back to soaring, the Curly Family Portfolio just hit an all-time intraday high.
If I could somehow persuade them to ring the closing bell right now The combination of our QQQ and fun money would push us over the top. Despite taking (and spending) RMDs every month along the way. And the slight negative results in SPY and NASDAQ.

Can't you spend down to pay your living expenses, meanwhile buy other assets with your income? This might reduce your taxes than selling the whole thing at once.atdharris wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 11:27 amUnfortunately it's in my taxable account and sitting on a 600%+ gain

It is a problem along the lines of "I put x% of my net worth under my mattress in cash. It has recently become too thick of a wad, my bed is lumpy and I can not sleep properly."Leesbro63 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 11:30 amWell, it's a good problem to have. This is a very, very good problem to have. Please send me a problem like that.
Answering a question is easy -- asking the right question is the hard part.
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
I thought about doing something gradual like that. Sell off MSFT and up my 401k contributions to offset, although I could hit max by doing that. I know it's risky to keep that much in one company, even though MSFT is doing well right now.Marseille07 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 12:35 pmCan't you spend down to pay your living expenses, meanwhile buy other assets with your income?
