Are earnings numbers leaking or is it a head fake?
Apple just had two dominant quarters in a row. And now the M1 Apple silicon chip is being used across almost all their devices. This is just going to allow them to be even more efficient and achieve better performance for their devices/ecosystem and have lower costs/better profits per unit. The people suing Apple because of the Appstore are morons. Apple is the goose that lays golden eggs, you don't bother the goose, leave it alone.

Massive beat for Facebook.

The reports over the last month or two of a red hot advertising market appear to have been very true.

Today everything red for us except Developed Markets and Intermediate-term Treasury Index, they sported a lovely shade of green.

Yet, even with all the red, our portfolio was only down <$3,000 from yesterday, so not even a bad day.

I was tempted to buy Microsoft on the dip, but that is hardly the route to take for someone easing out of individual stocks, ever so slowly.

My guess is yes and yes.

"the greatest businesses ever"
Yes, because they have incredibly innovative business models: With very small staff, they build near monopolies (some natural, some not so nice), and they sell a scarce resource (their customers eyeballs and personal info) with no inventory and huge margins.

"modern day version of..."
Yes, because they moat around their castle can be crossed, and the positions the gov't protects for them can be lost. Competition has a way of seeking out profitable incumbency. Political alliances change. Capitalism, by its very nature, encourages creative destruction. Sh!te happens.

We have been retired since 2007 and living on SS, pensions and withdrawals. Portfolio has increased and is near ATH. I am beginning to believe that 500 stocks is too many and if there were an S&P 100 it would do better.

BKLC is close for an index fund. Around 200 in it's holdings.

BNY Mellon US Large Cap Core Equity ETF and it's 0 fees. No wavers. First ETF to do so.

An interesting find.

I would be happier if it had a longer track record, but I should probably buy a couple of shares just to track it vs. SPY.

There is an S&P 100! And there's an ETF for it, too: OEF.

Here's a comparison between the S&P 500, the S&P 100, and Vanguard's mega-cap index fund.

Well look at that!

I stand corrected. There is more secret sauce in NASDAQ vs. S&P than in 100 vs. 500. A very interesting result.

Vanguard Mega Cap Growth (MGK) has 111 stocks and has a bit more of Nasdaq's secret sauce.

CAGR from Jan 2008 - Mar 2021
S&P -- 9.95%
MGK -- 12.76%
QQQ -- 15.86%

As a side note, Vanguard Wellington Fund only has 66 stocks.

Don't take anything in this thread (or the free-falling one) seriously. Boglehead philosophy doesn't really care about hour-to-hour or day-to-day changes.

Or even, really, year-to-year changes. 3-5 years from now is still considered short-term investing. We are investing for the long run here.

But there are a couple of silly threads like this one where people can blow off steam.
