It’s mind boggling how profitable the big tech companies are. The software business is the greatest money printer of all time.

I have to wait until the end of the month to calculate the balance of my portfolio. I hope the bonds will not have declined too much.

All of it came out of our pockets, somehow or another. I agree that it's mind boggling, how they could pull that off.Triple digit golfer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 26, 2021 8:11 pmAnd they all carry tens of billions of dollars in cash on the balance sheet. I think it’s funny how terms like “net income” or “earnings” are used instead of profit. Perhaps it would look bad for Microsoft to announce “20 Billion dollars of PROFIT in 3 months!” Lol

MSFT up $6.19 AH post earning report . It’s now up 39% YTD before the AH run-up! Regardless of how it does on Wednesday, it has been a good October. Could even be a 10% month.

I'm still up 100% on that stock, but the drop from $89 to $46 has been very painful and a lesson not to speculate too much of your money

Yeah, I'm glad I held on to MSFT, also.
My cost was $53.10/share, now up to $324.53/share at the moment, up $14.42/share today.

I am a lot more comfortable with an extra large helping of QQQ, which is "only" up 1% so far today.

How's the market ex-MSFT doing today (or maybe I should say ex-FANMAG+Tesla)? Free fall in progress?TechGuy365 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 1:01 pm Congrats - what a glorious day for MSFT holders!!!!! > $325.56 now, up about 5%.

My strategy as well - “Buy, Borrow, Die” (borrow only when necessary that is). It truly is. I suspect swing traders have made quite a game, perhaps profitable, from trading the $IWM. I've been tempted to do the same with the TSP S fund (which isn't the IWM, but has similar range-bound history the past 7 - 8 months), but it's such an inferior platform with its goofy rules (2 per month, trade must be placed before noon), it keeps me from doing foolish things like swing trading.
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Actually, we do try with URTY/SRTY It's been fun while it lasted but I'm sure small cap will break out either way eventually.justglassin wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 2:39 pmIt truly is. Looks like MSFT is unable to save the rest of QQQ. Oh well, I'm sure QQQ will be back after another couple weeks of earnings.

Microsoft made inquiries about acquiring Pinterest earlier this year. If you look at the Microsoft earnings one stand out is the growth from their LinkedIn acquisition. I wouldn't be surprised if they take another run at Pinterest.

That's interesting, because Paypal was also looking at Pinterest (please don't ask me why this makes sense).
Although, it appears they gave up on the horrible idea.
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
According to the pundits, Paypal wanted Pinterest's users so they could meet their user "growth" targets, and Pinterest wanted to leverage Paypal's ecommerce capabilities to scale vertically into a platform that milks customers at every level.Marseille07 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 7:15 pmThat's interesting, because Paypal was also looking at Pinterest (please don't ask me why this makes sense).

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
I remember. MSFT allegedly offered $86/share and I believe Pinterest turned them down. I put $5k into PINS for some fun when it was in the $10s/20s over a year ago so I doubled my money, but I had way more than doubled it 4 months ago. Oh well, the lessons of speculating on individual stocks..
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
A whole lot of soaring going on.

Took some money out of taxable for new car purchase yesterday- it’s nice to see more than 1/3 of it replaced by gains today.
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Big night tonight with Apple and Amazon reporting. Keeping my fingers crossed Amazon doesn't drop 8% like last quarter.
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Today could be a new milestone 4600 for the first time.
If every week between now and the end of the year is like this week, we could hit my 5400 year end target!

Hopefully tomorrow we can say "RIP range-bound AMZN" in the happy direction.

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
I hope so. Amazon is one of the few remaining individual stocks I own and it really hasn't done anything since last year. Not complaining considering it doubled in 2020, but still..

You seem to have some tech stocks. Why not just hold QQQ or something along those lines?

Taxes. I still own Amazon, Apple, MSFT, and FB which I purchased between 2012 and 2015 before my Boglehead days. And they are unfortunately in a taxable account and I don't want to take the big tax hit and also don't see much of a reason to sell them based on how they are performing. I may regret it later. It's something I keep monitoring.Marseille07 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 10:43 amYou seem to have some tech stocks. Why not just hold QQQ or something along those lines?

Oh right, if you're holding them for a while then you're right that there's no reason to sell now. Good picks thoughatdharris wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 11:02 am Taxes. Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Same. It's not a lot, but I like to hold some stock in Seattle-area companies just to play along.

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
I probably have more in those companies than I'd like, but as of now, I would feel foolish to sell them considering their financials, market position, and moat. That could all change, but I can't speculate what the future holds right now.

I also own PINS average price around $18, one of the last few individual stocks I bought. It's a company who's users are mostly women so I think it's doesn't have the same mindshare among the tech media. Microsoft has had success buying communities and CEO Satya Nadella says they are always looking for social communities to buy like Minecraft, Github, LinkedIN which were all very successful for them. Pinterest is a social media community with no drama(political strife) and tilted towards commerce, so they're an attractive prospect for many companies to acquire. They have some internal culture issues and were a company that had a lot of engagement during the pandemic so that's the downside case.
