Financial Newspapers & Publications
Hi Bogleheads -
I am curious how many folks read or subscribe to various financial and investment newspapers and publications such as: The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Businessweek, Forbes, and so forth. Where do you get your financial "porn" from? Digital or print?
I ask this question from the context of keeping up to date with world and business news from individuals who are interested and not at all from actionable investment trends or ideas.
Thank you for your thoughts!

The Economist. It tends to cover the longer term situation instead of just last week, dig deeper, and almost never run junk news like irrelevant trends or press releases.

I have the Bloomberg app on my phone or check bloomberg.com - it hits the highlights.

Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
Certainly not the WSJ. Bogleheads.org is clearly the best resource available.
vanguard.com/research periodically has interesting white papers
Nerd's eye view at kitces.com is sometimes very helpful
Jonathan Clements' Humble Dollar is always good, but mostly for underscoring what we already know
retirementresearcher.com is Wade Pfau's blog which can be very good
And Morningstar has good columns not infrequently; Christine Benz is always a pleasure

Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
The NY Times is very good with factual reporting on economics and business. OTOH, Fox News excels at outstanding opinion pieces.
Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
The Financial Times, IMHO the best newspaper out there.
Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
I have been a subscriber to The Economist for many years. Lately I have been more environmental and subscribed only to the digital edition. Pricey, but something I very much look forward to every Thursday. Takes me a day or two to get through. Financial and political stuff, strong emphasis on US, UK (of course), and China. If one has no interest in international goings on, it might not be the best choice. I do enjoy the non-US perspective, however.

Vanguard publishes a lot of investment research such that it is hard to keep up with it all. Do you read all the research reports that they publish? In addition, do you save them electronically for future reference?

I subscribe to the economist in print. I believe it gives a broader perspective on both global and US trends. Cover to cover every week doesn’t leave time for the “porn”.

Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
I got Barron's a few years back with leftover airline miles. The subscription was for one year, but it just keeps coming. I'd be OK if it stopped. Some of the articles are interesting, but 2/3 of the paper is stock and fund quotes.
Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
I often receive a day old unread copy of the WSJ from a buddy who gets it at work. No one knows the person who ordered the subscription originally and my buddy has no interest in it. At the library I occasionally look at the Kiplinger Retirement Report, Forbes, Barrons and the NY Times. Besides BHs I occasionally look at Morningstar and Real Clear Markets as well as Vanguard blogs. The Oblivious Investor and HumbleDollar often confirm what I have already been doing.
These sources are less important to me as most of my significant financial decisions have already been made.

I don't read everything, but I definitely read the ones that I find interesting. I don't need to save them because it will always be there on the website, and they're categorized in a very intelligent format.abuss368 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 9:51 pmHi Artsdoctor -Artsdoctor wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:52 pm vanguard.com/research periodically has interesting white papers

The first reading I do every morning and throughout the day is Apple News and Microsoft News.
I like it that they both give brief concise info on what's happening.
I read the free pdf version of the WSJ daily, but only the business/market stuff.
I also read/subscribe to Barrons ($48/yr).
When I have time, I also scan the NYT, but I don't subscribe to it.

I don't pay for any but I read many online. just learned from Bloomberg a few minutes ago that the Fed's bank stress test included a scenario with a 65% drop in stock values, for example.

I read WSJ (rarely, I find their coverage mostly disappointing compared to Bloomberg), NYT, Bloomberg, FT Alphaville, and generally anything that circulates on FinTwit. My favorite Financial publication is the daily newsletter Money Stuff, a production of Money Stuff Business Thing, LLC.
Oh, I absolutely do not pay for news of any kind.

I've never had any interest in pornography, financial or otherwise. When it comes to any aspect of living life, I like the real thing. The real thing in investing, personal finance, and economics is to be found in books (and often in books outside those very fields). Much else, to quote Biggie Smalls, is just somebody "frontin'" (and after something).

Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
I read the WSJ to keep abreast of the general market in terms of deals happening in the near future which may interest me to investigate further. The FT I don't read just because it's basically redundant information but geared to europeans.
Weeklies are much more opinionated and very hit and miss, but just like dailies they may be useful to get a digest of new information regarding deals in motion. Never forbes or fortune, though, just businessweek.

I glance at the WSJ, Financial Times and Bloomberg most days. Aside from a quick look at the headlines, I may read an article or two.

I used to think the Times was good in that area. I've had a subscription from right after college until this year (44 years) although i had read it every day from about age 10 on. I dropped it and haven't missed it. I found that everything in the last 2 years has been getting a political spin and I simply could no longer know whether I was reading reporting or biased reporting. As to other publications, I used to get Barons, Money, Kiplinger's, Forbes, WSJ and some now defunct ones (Smart Money, Worth) at one time or other. Once I settled on my allocation for good, I dropped all of them and miss nothing about them.

Re: Financial Newspapers & Publications
I subscribe to Bloomberg BusinessWeek for $2.00/year. Each year the magazine company sends me a postcard stating what my new rate will be (full price). I call the 800 number to cancel, but for years now I have been offered an extension, all via automated phone system.
I think some magazine publishers need numbers to get better ad rates. So as long as it stays $2.00/year I will keep my subscription.
The local fish wrapper is wretched, so I just read an article or two during breakfast.
I really like the The Economist, used to have a subscription, but way too pricey today, considering the wealth of quality writing available on the 'net for free.

I really like the Economist too. By some miracle, they manage to put out an audio version every week too, available to digital subscribers. It is the entire magazine read as a series of podcasts (or one long 8 hr podcast) by wonderful (BBC-quality) newsreaders. And it’s put out shortly after the online print facsimile is available. Incredible news organization. And great headline puns!VictoriaF wrote: ↑Sat Jul 07, 2018 5:48 pmI like The Economist and don't mind the price. I used to have cnbc TV on during market hours. Then I dropped tv service in favor of just Hulu. Barely miss it.
I don't read any printed except for Bogleheads and any articles linked from Google finance or Bloomberg news. I get nothing out of it except for Bogleheads. I'm losing interest in finance other than to see the index quotes on the day.
When working I will sometimes have access to the WSJ at the office. Can't say I really get much from it.
I'm much more interested in news of the sports that I follow.

11 year B/H here.
Several years ago, my wife received offers for magazine subscriptions from a garden supply company. I picked Bloomberg and have enjoyed it ever since.
It will not influence my investing strategy (two index funds at 60-40 AA) but gives me a great macro view of the world in business and economics. I do not watch any business TV shows . I made up my mind years ago about what is minimally necessary for success and don't need constant reinforcement.
The good stuff never changes.

Epsilon Theory is another great source. It was started by actual institutional investors, and they have a wide range of other professionals who write for the site. The quality of insight from investment professionals is noticeably different from what you get from WSJ and other traditional sources
GMO research is free, I believe. Oaktree's website has all of Howard Marks's "Insights" archived.
I don't know the link but you can find a lot of quality research from research groups, asset managers, and hedge funds on reddit. They aggregate all of them quarterly and in real-time, so it's really easy to find new material

Investing kin rave about Bloomberg‘s Money Stuff by Matt Levine.
I currently subscribe to WSJ for 20/mo, online only, mostly for the crossword and opinion lately. I like Marketwatch and Barrons and read them occasionally but do not subscribe, more due to time constraints than money - I would read them too often if I subscribed. I also occasionally read some German and Swiss financial papers online, but seldom in Q4, how’s that for pretentious?
In the distant past I read the FT, Forbes, Fortune, Black Enterprise, The Economist, Bloomberg, Inc and Fast Company.
But BH outdoes all of them by far.
Tony if you’re in Real Estate, its Crains NY Business and the Daily Deal. Isnt it?
