100 equities. Age 37. Depending on what life expectancies look like and the total portfolio size, we'll begin transitioning at 3% a year (through either contribution changes or rebalancing--depending on annual equity performance) at either 50 or 55--depending on whether the goal is to hit 60/40 or 70/30 at age 65. We'll likely aim for 70/30 because I'll likely have pension in addition to SS and a rental property that cash flows well. I'm surprised by how conservative some younger members in this thread are. If you won't touch the money for decades, it should be 100% equities imo. The data is very clear that the average ROR is higher, and you have no risk of withdrawal in a down market due to age. I suspect Lehman Brothers and 2008 traumatized an entire generation.

It's very different for some trusts I manage, but those have annual payment obligations.

Always a fun thread ... I am 68 and 1/3 years old and my spousal unit is a year younger than me. I compute our allocation two ways.

1) Including two guaranteed funds (currently yielding 4%) my allocation is 40% equities and 60% bonds and for this purpose I am including my guaranteed funds as part of my bond allocation.

2) Excluding my guaranteed funds I am 60% equities and 40% bonds. The argument for excluding my guaranteed funds is that I am currently taking interest only payments from them to fund a portion of my living expense so in a sense they are the equivalent of a pension that is not indexed for inflation. I suspect that most people with pensions measure and share their portfolio allocation excluding their pension.

For now I am happy with my allocation. I will also note that excluding my guaranteed funds my portfolio is composed of a small handful of index funds. I have a total international equity fund that composes 20% of my equities and I do not have, nor do I want, an international bond fund.

I would be interested in hearing from people with pensions how they measure and report their allocation. Do they just look at this excluding their pension(s), do they compute the net present value of their pension(s) and include that amount as part their bond allocation, or do they do something else?

10 yrs for sure. I am hoping that 10 yrs will ensure my kid will finish his college and will have his future set.

Going to get more aggressive in the retirement account but need to keep the non-retirement account funds safe.

No bonds. Wouldn't lend to anyone who has their own money printing press and as such has no need to borrow. As for corporate bonds - prefer instead to shift the risk over to the stock side. Figure that we'll have enough 'bonds' integral within pensions.

Choice of owning three houses, living in one, renting two
OR
Land (house), gold, art .. old generational wealth style
OR
Land (house), gold, stocks

... and we prefer the latter. No tenant hassles. No keen eye for art needed. Can be geopolitical risk diversified (three countries). Currency and asset diversified. Income production diversified across imputed rent, dividends, SWR and pensions income (state pension income still pending living some more years yet).

A 30 year 0% real TIPS ladder returns your inflation adjusted money via 30 yearly 3.33% (SWR) instalments. Stock/gold tends to do the same, but unlike TIPS that leave nowt at the end are inclined to end with a residual amount comparable to the inflation adjusted start date amount. Have cake and eat it. In a bad case, more often more.

Could be considered as home + imputed compares to stocks + dividends, so 66% equities, and 33% gold being similar to a undated bond. So as a ratio to compare to others that prefer stocks/bond, 67/33 (PV).

In spite of all the great advice here about recency and market timing I notice on this board that peoples percentage in stocks is lots higher than it was back in 2009.

How old are you, what percent are you in stocks, and why?

There is much more than "How old are you" when deciding your stock/bond allocation. My suggestion is to use Vanguard's Asset Allocation Calculator.

I'm 54, planning to retire in 5 years and am currently about 90/10. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. Been contemplating upping my bonds for a couple years and have gotten close, but can never pull the trigger. Bonds scare me more than stocks I don't know why. I'm thinking if I want to up my allocation that now is probably the ideal time to do it.

55/45 @ 62
We are supposed to be 50/50 at retirement in 6 months but stocks keep going up. At this rate we'll have to spend stocks next year instead of our bridging fund. We begin a rising equities glide path at the end of the year but are already at the end of 2024 AA. Of course a lot can happen in 5-17 months. That is why we have a bridging fund.

61 & 57

85 stocks / 10 bonds / 5 cash

Stick to this asset allocation hard & tight.

Retired, bonds & cash would last about 5 years of normal to high living expenses. Also have small pension, plan to take SS at 70.

This is the least aggressive my asset allocation has ever been. I actually can’t stomach any less aggressive asset allocation!

Switched from lifetime of heavy U.S tilt to global market cap this year.

All stocks and bonds are vanilla indexed, except for ibonds.

This is actually the most conservative my portfolio has been in years.

In any event, it is fine for now, I feel no rush to go more aggressive.
