approximately 10% overall YTD
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
Up 7.2% YTD
A 10-20% allocation to gold has helped with the sequence of returns problem. Some gold held physically is also good insurance against the all-digital-assets problem.
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
Just under 15% annualized return 2010-2020, and about 13 or 14% YTD so far.

Looks like just shy of 9% gains YTD. 80/20 portfolio with fixed income mainly in 401k stable value.
I’ve made some large white knuckle lump sums this year into my AA expecting TLH opportunities with all the volatility. But the sucker just keeps going up!

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
How do I calculate the return if I added money irregularly in this year which are not insignificant to the total portfolio value as im still young and my portfolio value is very small? I use IBKR but it includes the money i added as profit which is incorrect.
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
I do ((current portfolio value minus YTD contributions) / (Dec 31 2020 portfolio value)) minus 1. It's not perfect, but good enough. Oh and I'm at 9.9%.gokuisthebest wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 11:49 pm How do I calculate the return if I added money irregularly in this year which are not insignificant to the total portfolio value as im still young and my portfolio value is very small? Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
I look forward to the time when I look at gains this way. (My spending now is very erratic but will smooth out in a few years). Definitely a great perspective on growth of funds.carminered2019 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 7:46 pm I amp up to 3.5 years of living expenses YTD and up 12 years of living expenses in 2020.
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
I never thought of looking at it that way. I am 70, not retired although I may have to soon, AA is 30/70, self-employed, no pension.carminered2019 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 7:46 pm I am up to 3.5 years of living expenses YTD and up 12 years of living expenses in 2020.
Considering what I would need to live on (aside from SS) if I retired, I made about 7 times that over the previous 12 months. I'll take it!

I have used that method ever since retirement, it's been nice every year to see portfolio returns higher than retirement spending by a multiple.jarjarM wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 6:15 pmThis is a great way to look at portfolio growth, I'm going to steal itcarminered2019 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 7:46 pm I amp up to 3.5 years of living expenses YTD and up 12 years of living expenses in 2020.
Our current portfolio is 62% higher than the day I retired just over 10 years ago. We more than survived the sequence of returns risk .

9.58%. 100% equities. Ironically, the things weighing me down this year are my long-term positions in Apple, Amazon, FB, and Microsoft. ARKK hasn't helped either, but they all helped me in 2020.

This illustrates the perils of lower diversification, resulting from investing in single stocks and narrowly focused mutual funds.

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
I gave up on buying individual stocks many years ago. These companies have such large gains that I would face a big tax bill should I sell them, and right now, I have no reason to believe they will fall apart anytime soon. But yes, this year, they have not helped me, but last year, they powered my portfolio to a 42% gain versus the 16% for the S&P.ruralavalon wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 9:44 amThis illustrates the perils of lower diversification, resulting from investing in single stocks and narrowly focused mutual funds.

Don't know and don't care.
Been retired for 16 years, and current assets are slightly higher than at the start, but it will fluctuate.

10% YTD. Guess partially due to big rebalancing from bonds to equity in 2020. 1 year return as of today 58%

YTD returns of a few 60/40 funds for your viewing pleasure:
+4.71% VSMGX Vanguard LifeStrategy Moderate Growth fund, has US + International
+5.91% VBIAX Vanguard Balanced Index fund, has US only and no international
+7.80% DGSIX, DFA Global Allocation 60/40 I fund, a small-cap and value tilted 60/40 asset allocation
Once again, the performance of a 60/40 portfolio varies by quite a bit depending on how the 60/40 is consituted.

I'm up 8.45% with a 60/40 portfolio mainly due to my small cap tilt and having half of fixed income in stable value.

Up 88%. Diamond hands stocks/crypto. Bonds are trash but you can't win them all

18.4% IRR on 70% stock (global weighted) and 30% fixed income = (basically a year of base salary).
