Happened again a week ago, OMG [OT coronavirus comment removed by moderator oldcomputerguy] Then I remembered the time of year.

Thanks for posting the link. They don't make the info on dates easy to find for reasons I don't understand.

From memory, I've only ever seen one quarter at a time in the past. So I am happy to have dates for the first three quarters of the year.

It reduces the multiple new threads at quarterly dividend times, when someone happens to notice that the SP 500 (or whatever) was up that day, but their fund was down. They're confused since they didn't realize it was divided day for their fund.

Fidelity Puritan (FPURX) Down 10% Friday

Post by FlaLove »

[This topic post and the replies have been merged into the topic "Why did my fund suddenly drop in value?" that is stickied at the top of the Investing - Theory, News forum- Moderator Misenplace]

Just noticed that Fidelity Puritan (FPURX) appears to be down 10% on Friday and trying to figure out why? A little confused how a diversified fund like this can drop so much in one day when it didn't seem like there was much movement on Friday with the major indexes. Am I missing something?

Was there a distribution and it being an active fund? maybe they made a bad trade you couldn’t possibly know about, with it being a mutual fund.

I don't own FPURX, but I thought, "gee, I wonder if it paid a dividend on Friday."

So I tried a Google search for "FPURX dividend date". Sure enough, the very first hit had the following snippet underneath it:
Oct. 08, 2021 DIVIDEND ANNOUNCEMENT: Puritan Fd./Fidelity Puritan Trust (NASDAQ: FPURX) on 10-08-2021 declared a dividend of $3.0160 per share
Another search revealed that the share prices on Thursday and Friday were $29.24 and $26.21, a drop of $3.03. Case closed. 8-)

That's a pretty hefty distribution for an allocation fund.

Fidelity funds vary. While fiscal year end distributions happen throughout the year, most regular mutual funds do their year-end distributions on the first three Fridays of December (about 1/3 each Friday with the funds consistent from year-to-year on which Friday it is). "Funds of funds" distribute on various dates after the third Friday, some as late as 12/30 this year.

It being a Friday in December, a good number of Fidelity mutual funds will make distributions this afternoon.

I love Christmastime, but it sure seems like capital gains distributions are source of surprise and amazement year after year. I suppose we might get another round at dividend time.

It's a good problem to have.

What happened to VWILX today? (Vanguard’s International Growth Fund)

Post by ColoRetiredGirl »

[Topic merged into the existing ongoing discussion -- moderator oldcomputerguy]

I was surprised to see VWILX drop so much in one day. I scoured the internet but cannot find anything that explains the drop. Any VWILX fund holders out there who knows what caused the drop? I know long and short term capital gains are around the corner but I do not think they have anything to do with the drop. :annoyed

Are you holding it in a tax-advantaged account (IRA, 401(k), etc.), or taxable?

Every quarter or every half year and year end funds distribute dividends and capital gains accordingly.

When this occurs the fund NAV drops proportional to the distribution.

Something like that

I hold it in an IRA account. I know not to hold it in a taxable account. I realize capital gains could reduce my balance but this should occur at year end not now, I think.

Okay, this maybe the case as I calculated my capital gain at about the amount close to the drop in my holdings. I will see if the capital gain shows up soon. Thank you.

I looked on the Internet and I cannot find what "***** ********" is, but I can guess. (Item in quotes changed to protect the innocent.)

I have owned VWILX's little brother VWIGX in a taxable account for many years, and while the big "payout" is not particularly welcome, it's way better than a loss. The big Tesla run-up in the past year is almost certainly the villain, but it was wearing a clown nose and honking a horn as it went up. Very entertaining.

I got it! The payout is welcome for me. I thought the ex-dividend date was later in the month. I should have checked there first.
