Transfer IRA to Vanguard - Snail Mail Possible?

Post by DarkHelmetII »

Is it possible to transfer an IRA to Vanguard via snail mail? Or must it be completed online, as suggested by this page https://investor.vanguard.com/account-t ... ansfer-ira?

It doesn't look like you can do an in kind asset transfer offline but you can do a direct rollover (cash only).

As I recall when you call Vanguards 800 number and ask about transferring a retirement account they will transfer you a IRA specialist who will walk you through the process. Once they have the needed paperwork they can usually handle deal with the old company directedly so you will usually not have to do anything other than give them copies of your old account statements and sign a few forms.

I do not know it for a fact but I am virtually certain that you will not have any problems with doing all the paperwork by mail.

That said Fidelity has offices in most major cities so it might make sense to use them instead of Vanguard if they have an office near you. With them you could just go into a local office to get help when you need it.

They actually have a lot of really good mutual funds but you need to do a bit of research to avoid some of their funds that have higher expenses. I have accounts at both Fidelity and Vanguard mainly for historical reasons.

You do have an IRA account already set up at Vanguard? If so, you fill out the on line transfer form, when completed you have to print it and sign it. You also need a copy of the last months statement for your IRA at the other broker. Mail them to Vanguard.

I am still not understanding what the benefit of pure snail mail would be.

That's a question for the op but online was mentioned (and link shown) originally with a question about whether it can be done by mail instead.
