What Individual stocks are you buying?
Good morning everyone!
If you are throwing your money at any individual stocks currently, what are they?
I'm really developing a strong position in:
AAL
GE
PPL

No naked stocks. Only through index funds. I don't necessarily decide what I buy inside an indexFrugalbear wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 5:42 am Good morning everyone!

I don't understand the point behind this exercise. Is this your play money that you want to take a chance, just to scratch an itch.?
Re: What Individual stocks are you buying?
I thought about buying Ford when it went under $9. Now it is under $7.
Even thinking about an individual stock makes it go down (for me).
Total US stock index has most all you are thinking are "deals".

I sold 40 individual stocks and only kept MSFT after I found this forum. It was a PITA to keep up to stay on top of the news.
Re: What Individual stocks are you buying?
Now that IS frightening. I have the power to make the price of a stock go down simply by buying it. Bloom2708's powers exceed mine, he (or she) has the power to make the price go down simply by thinking about buying it. Wow.

Actually PPL did sound familiar, and yes, that turns out to be the ticker symbol for PP&L, Pennsylvania Power & Light. I once owned forty shares. I even went to the annual meeting in Williamsport to offer a shareholder's resolution. Voted down, of course, after which I sold the stock. OK, I'll bite. Why does it appeal to a frugal bear?

I sold off most of my individual stocks once I realized that I was closet indexing and not outperforming the market. I haven't bought any individual stocks in a while, but I still hold the FAANGs, Berkshire and Visa.

All these over the last two weeks with play money (10% of portfolio set aside for sector ETFs and Individual stocks). I buy about as much of each, as I'd pay for an expensive dinner with my better half. So really is play money.

We have not owned an individual stock in over 12 years.
Jack Bogle has said that investors should avoid individual stocks as the risk is too great. He did however also say that if you so chose to have a "funny money" account, that it should be no greater than 5% of the portfolio.

I basically asked the same thing yesterday:

As for me, after I regularly invest my smart money through Vanguard, I've got a few bucks left in my cash account. With that I buy Wendy's, because it's better than cash and because I'm bullish on fresh, never frozen beef.

Berkshire owns 10% of American Airlines, 11.2% of Delta, 10.4% of Southwest Airlines and 8.8% of United Airlines. Holdings are as of December 31, 2019 as reported in Berkshire Hathaway’s 13F filing on February 14, 2020, except for Delta Air Lines, which is as of February 27, 2020.BuyandHold37 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 3:32 pm American Airlines is garbage. Indeed, beaten down travel stocks plus a handful of stocks that have been on my bucket list to buy when they took a big dip, like: Starbucks, Walmart, Target and Visa. Looked into Nike but still can't pull the trigger, PE is still too high for my speculation.carmonkie wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 2:16 pmInteresting selections mostly travel related with all the Coronavirus going onbackofbeyond wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 12:04 pm All these over the last two weeks with play money (10% of portfolio set aside for sector ETFs and Individual stocks). I generally don't buy individual stocks (except for ESPP thru my company). But I started window shopping today, and I'm eyeing these for some play money (< 5% of portfolio):
XOM, P/E = 12, Div Yield = 9%
JPM, P/E = 10, Div Yield = 3.5%
BRK.B, P/E= 5.8
The yield on XOM is really quite remarkable; doubtful if that is sustainable. I think I read somewhere on Bogleheads that last quarter they paid 102% of earnings as dividends

Re: What Individual stocks are you buying?
I *accidentally* bought a bunch of individual stocks this week ...
Explanation:
Some time ago I submitted a bunch of GTC orders at 25+% discounts for a number of stocks. MSFT, MDB, GS, TRV, DOW. (How did I pick these -- I'm in software industry and I see MSFT and MDB on very long-term sustainable growth trajectories. GS, TRV, DOW-- just some selected large value stocks from reading Value Line's Dow 30 coverage which is free.)
Pretty much all of them got executed this week.
So, yes, I actually bought DOW this week ... goodness gracious! But pretty happy about the prices I got for MSFT, MDB, GS.
Disclaimer: This is all play money. < 5% of my overall portfolio. I do it for educational value, because it's fun, because it helps me stay grounded in the business realities of what's going on in the market, and because (as a business guy in technology industry) it's actually helpful for my job to be up to date on the fundamentals beneath some of these businesses.

Its sustainable, however capital expenditures may need to be curtailed a bit, or they can continue to borrow. What's not sustainable is $20 oil, most companies will go bust before exxon mobil does.aj76er wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 1:12 pm I generally don't buy individual stocks (except for ESPP thru my company). Current positions I will most likely add to:
Paypal
Square
Mercardo Libre
Amazon
Berkshire
Disney
Apple
StoneCo Ltd.
Businesses that are on my watch list that I may end up buying:
Wells Fargo
Zillow
RedFin
NERD (a gaming basket of stocks)
Exxon
Etsy (had a previous position, sold it for a 20% gain before the hysteria hit)
The DOW dropping to $15k will be the trip-wire that shifts all of my TSP-retirement account into the market (I think it's the C fund). The account is currently at 50/50, market/bonds.
Also started a small brokerage account for my young children. It's in cash now. If Disney drops to $50, they'll be proud owners of Mickey and Minnie.
I also own several dogs that are the anchors of my portfolio. They're an ever-present reminder of how wrong I can be, despite how much I like the thesis.

Re: What Individual stocks are you buying?
I'm mainly indexed, but I currently have 17 positions (had 23 positions at my height, but want to keep below 20 moving forward since that works well for me). I sold EL, BF/B, MKC, MSFT and HRL at the end of 2019 mainly because of valuation after holding for several years (better to be lucky than good on the timing ). I have bought a little BF/A, RSG, PG to go along with buying some VTI.

Re: What Individual stocks are you buying?
If several other people here list the same stocks as you (travel/airlines/real estate), is that an indicator to you that you should also buy, or that you shouldn't?
If you see a stock listed here that you haven't seen mentioned anywhere else recently, is that an indicator to you that perhaps that person knows something you don't, and that you should run off and read up on it, to stoke some confirmation bias?
"Everybody in Wall St. is so smart that their brilliance offsets each other. And that whatever they know is already reflected in the level of stock prices for the much, and consequently what happens in the future represents what they don’t know." -Benjamin Graham
I do not believe in speculating that I know something other people do not.

Re: What Individual stocks are you buying?
Fortunately, the large majority of my equity investments are through index funds, primarily SP500. Over the recent years, I have been buying some individual stocks mostly MLPs and REITs attempting to generate some dividend flow.
Almost all of these names have been DESTROYED in this crash with an average paper loss of 63% from my basis:
SKT
LADR
EPD
ET
SPG
SFL
I am not selling ANY of these stocks as they only represent 5% of my invested assets as of today and they are way below intrinsic value IMO. However, I am making a personal vow TO NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL STOCK EVER AGAIN. It's simply not worth the pain.
