Re: Laptop + Monitor vs. All-in-One?

However, these monitors are generally going to be a step down in image quality from the iMac, in part because of MacOS's scaling limitations. The only way to get equivalent or better image quality is with a Studio Display or better. How much worse is a 27" 4k monitor than what Mac offers? I've worked on Retina screens for the last 4 or so years, so I don't know if it would drive me crazy to go to a "worse" looking monitor or not... You want something with 110 (non-retina) or 220 (retina) pixels per inch because of the Mac scaling. Your standard 27 inch 4K monitor has a PPI of 163, which is in the bad zone and why they never look great and have to scale in not the most advantageous way. Check out this article for an explanati...

I assume you're not on the beta of Sequoia. Tuning for speed is one of the last things they do to get out of beta.

How many browser tabs do you have open? After about 400-450 tabs, you may run into RAM issues (although probably not an issue with a Pro). If you do have a bunch, it could be some bad code in one of the tabs. I'd bookmark them all into a folder (assuming they're important) and then go to only one open tab and see if the problem goes away.

Re: Computer monitor for MacBook? (resolution and brightness)

Something I wish I knew when I bought my 27" 4K monitor - google "macbook match external display pixel density" and you'll get a trove of information about how to match your macbook's native resolution to an external monitor. In my experience this makes a much bigger difference to the appearance of text than anything else. My second monitor was a 27" but 2560x1440, which is close to matching for non-4K performance. Works great. If you want true ultraHD performance from a macbook external display you'll have to pay a lot for it - macs don't play the best with 27" 4K monitors - scaling is passable but not ideal. Re: Potential House: Curved Stair lift: Is that a dealbreaker?

It's absolutely feasible. We just sold a house where not only was there a curve on the staircase itself, but like the staircase in your first photo, we had a 90 degree turn at the top and a 180 degree turn at the bottom where the chair would turn around the base of the staircase and park itself out of the way beside the stairs. Worked flawlessly and was really no different than the totally straight stairlift we had going down to the finished basement. The only real difference was that they used some kind of laser-thingy to measure the actual stair heights and curvature to make rail that exactly matched the staircase, as opposed to standard straight rails. Of course that made it more expensive, but oh well, cheaper than moving to a ranch hou...

Re: When Should TIPS Enter One’s Portfolio?

According to Vanguard:
In the earlier stages of an investor's life cycle, wage increases and higher real-returning assets such as equities can hedge against inflation. But as an investor nears and enters retirement, it becomes much more difficult to add to a portfolio through additional earnings. In these later stages, the risk of inflation becomes pronounced enough to warrant including tools that provide direct inflation protection.
So, basically, in line with target date funds, add some TIPS when your stock allocation goes below 50%.

Re: Form 1116 Foreign Tax Credit Question

I forgot to mention that using form 1116 our tax credit would be only $486 this year. So by claiming the $600 max credit allowed without filing the 1116 we would come out $114 ahead this year. That's why you have to fill out the form 1116. The $300/$600 limits are sort of freebies from complexity for smaller amounts, but don't reflect how the actual credit amount is calculated. The actual foreign tax credit may be less than those because it is actually defined as: Your foreign tax credit cannot be more than your total U.S. tax liability multiplied by a fraction. The numerator of the fraction is your taxable income from sources outside the United States. The denominator is your total taxable income from U.S. and foreign sources. (IRS Public...

I assumed it was going to be equal thirds of domestic stock, international stock, and bonds.

That would be a fine portfolio and has even been recommended by Bill Bernstein in “If You Can”, and Andrew Tobias in “The only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need.”

But, instead, the recommended third in venture capital and private equity and debt seems more like a pitch for something with a high commission.

Re: Will China stocks stop performing poorly?

“ The reason to avoid China's equity markets can be summarized in one word: dilution.

The best estimates are that the Chinese equity markets dilute their share pools on the order of about 20% per year, so even if the country is growing its GDP and corporate profits at slightly less than 10% pa, they can't keep up on a per-share basis.

This is borne out by the MSCI China index, which since 12/31/92 has had a total return of 1.6% in nominal dollar terms, or less than zero in real terms.

The problem, of course, is that if you're indexing Emerging Markets, there's no way to avoid the country's ~30% weighting in most indexes. ”
