Re: Are you buying I bonds right now?

I plan on buying the full 10K in 2022. Question for those buying...any advantage waiting till May when a new rate comes out? Or would you just buy the 10K now? I guess the other option is put in 5K now and then another 5K later in the year.

To answer in one word. YES! They can serve as an emergency fund in a bind and will get you better interest rates than banks. The only downside as I see it is the one year no cashout. If you can handle that, then, to me, it is a no brainer you should hold.

About 70/30 Stocks/Bonds. For stocks 50/50 VTI/VXUS. For Bonds I bonds, some CDs, Ally and Marcus savings accounts. Starting to put a bit in crypto though so my overall ratio will change a bit. Most likely will be 70/25/5 now.

Re: Milestone #2 250K

Hi everybody, Just wanted to post because I hit a mini milestone today. Checked my Vanguard account and my stock holdings were just over 100K. I know this is small for most people on here, but considering I started investing in March 2013 and don't make a huge salary (I'm a teacher) it's something I'm happy about. I will keep my overall portfolio at about 70/30 stock to bond and keep using VTI/VXUS at a 50/50 ratio. Really appreciate all your guys' help on here and hope the next milestone, 200K for the whole portfolio, occurs by summer 2K18. Thanks again guys. Now I probably jinxed things and will be back under 100K in a few hours when the market opens. Congratulations VAslim16! One $100k at a time! Great Job. You started a neat thread wit...

Love this. I do think the market is overvalued...so the best I can do (IMHO) is rebalance back to my 70/30 allocation. I have a little uncertainty about my job for the next year so I am okay locking in some profits (but also potentially losing out on more) to get a bit more cash just in case I need it.

Thanks man. You don't see that as too risky? I kinda like it to be honest. Keep 36K in cash...each year add 10K I bonds then have the rest at the 50/50 split.

Any other thoughts guys? I am about two months away from deciding yes or no. Ironically, my thinking now is keep doing 10K in I bonds yearly, keep the 70/30 split for another 5 years or so (or maybe forever)...and having excess funds in CDs or VWTIX. I don't really have any options for tax-exempt investing now FYI. The point of 3.5% over 20 years not being that great is well taken. Especially with inflation expected to ramp up. Thanks as always.

Are there any Physics subject experts / HS teachers here who can direct us to online resources etc. I would not mind re-reading Physics myself to help him as well. Thanks

Also AP subjects have their own channels on YouTube. Be sure he gets on that. And his teacher should get him enrolled on AP Classroom. They order exams now thru classroom so he needs to be enrolled there regardless.

EE bonds soon?

Hi all, Looking for some opinions on whether EE bonds might be a good fit for me. I am single, 41 and will be 42 in a few months. My portfolio is about 300K (not great, but not bad for a teacher salary). I work mostly overseas so all my investments are in a taxable account. I am 70/30 with my stocks an even 50/50 VTI/VXUS and my fixed income in I-bonds, CDs and cash. With all that is going on, I am wondering if starting at my 42nd b-day I start investing 1K a month in EE bonds, with the idea that I withdrawal in 20 years and have 2K in income. I still plan on investing 10K a year in I-bonds but if I allocate another 10K to EE bonds, I might not have as much as I'd like to invest in stocks. So, just looking for thoughts/insights/different pe...

So while SP500 is back to 0% YTD as of today, as an European investor you are still down -7% YTD. This sucks.
The USD is still getting hammered and might go on for awhile. If I was a US only index investor, I would be a bit concerned.

Looks like a free fall day today. Give and take at it again. Might have to fire up that thread. Looks like the faang earnings might not be able to save the day.

No. Backdoor Roth is a process where you contribute "earned income" up to $6k per year to a Traditional IRA, and assuming you have no other pre-tax assets, convert that to Roth IRA.

If you have no earned income, the whole process is dead in the water.

You MAY BE able to have a Roth, either direct or backdoor, if you use Foreign Tax Credit instead
Awesome. Thanks for the info lakpr.

But this recent drop is causing my to worry about my job a bit (among other things). My plan is to keep adding equity monthly but not rebalance. Part of me wants to add a bit more to my emergency fund but I'm not sure I will do that yet. I haven't run the numbers, but I suspect I've probably hit a rebalancing band. 2/3 of our money auto-rebalances, because it's in Wellington/Wellesley or a roboadvisor account. So it's basically just the 401(k)s. I'll probably look today or tomorrow, and take whatever action is necessary to restore my AA. One thing I did do immediately once we had those first three ~3% down days in a row, was change my 401(k) contributions from being in line with my AA to 100% equities (70% US, 30% International). That will slow the shift slightly, but I'll probably still need to rebalance what I've got. Thanks, that’s what I do too with contributions, just not sure if it’s wise or not to rebalance when things are as volatile as they’ve been the last few da...

May 2011: -$46,118
May 2012: -$13,336

Current salary is $60K
My update:

Oct 2016: $107,950. Feels good to have amassed the first 100K. Still a long ways to go though.

Re: Mini Milestone 100K

I know I will sound like a broken record to some, but you are a fairly new BH so you get to hear it at least once. Arbitrary dollar amounts are not good milestones, because individual circumstances vary widely. A number of zeros might feel good, but the better yardstick is a multiplier of your gross income (1X, 2X, 4X, 8X). Once you get to about 8X the best yardstick will be a multiplier of your expenses in retirement. It is probably always the best yardstick, but it is hard to project what that might be early in the accumulation stage. X income is a good substitute as it should increase some range +- of the wage index. Wanted to update that I’m now at 250K which is 4x income. Hoping to be at 500K in 5 years which would be about 7x income ...
