Re: relying on interactive charts to make investment decisions
Hello, and thank you everyone who replied to my question. I cannot see how to answer people individually, hence this global response to everyone. I should have been more specific in my question, and will start with an explanation. I look at the charts and see what goes up consistently over time, despite the ups and downs along the way. I invest for the long term, and want to park my money where it will grow reliably and substantially. So far, I like the high growth funds (MGK, VGT, VIGAX). I also keep some money in a more conservative fund in case I need to draw on it for house repairs, a new appliance, a new car, etc. My question relates to how reliable are the charts in presenting a true picture of returns? I recently saw VBIAX compared t...

relying on interactive charts to make investment decisions
Is this a smart (safe) way to go? I use Yahoo Finance interactive charts, the only free interactive chart I know. Are there better ones to use?

liquidating a 35-yr-old mutual fund
Question:
I put $3000 in a mutual fund some 35 years ago. Now it is worth $44,000. I never liked this fund and am getting up the courage to move out of it. What are the tax implications? I am in the lowest tax bracket. Thanks for any expert help!

Re: converting IRA funds to Roth, to avoid RMDs
Wow, thanks for the TaxCaster tip! I entered my projected retirement pensions, and social security benefits minus the whiplash elimination provision, and TaxCaster calculated that I had no taxable income, and put me in the 10% tax bracket.
But I don't see where to enter 5k increments of IRA funds. There are little boxes for entering interest, capital gains, etc., but no IRA fund boxes.

converting IRA funds to Roth, to avoid RMDs
If I am retired, in the 15% tax bracket, how can I tell how much I can convert from my IRA to a Roth in any given year, without incurring extra taxes?

Re: What to look for in an income fund?
So…what are the assets one should target when looking for a good income fund? Does it really matter, as long as the fund delivers good dividends?

Re: What to look for in an income fund?
Thank you, Gill and John.
To rephrase my question:
Some Vanguard funds have the word "income" in their title (for example: Equity Income, Growth & Income…). What makes them income funds? High yield? Couldn't any fund with a high yield be used for income? What other factors should be considered when choosing a fund for generating income?
Is this still the wrong question to be asking?

What to look for in an income fund?
I'm not very knowledgeable about investing, despite having been in mutual funds almost three decades. I am retiring this year and realize that I should be switching from growth funds to income funds. What should I look for in an income fund? Does chart growth matter, or is it all about high yields or dividends, or what?
