You can't set it to zero, the lowest is $.01.
I tried just now to lower it, I got it down to $100 with a rep on the phone. Not sure about the 0.01 but for sure it can't be cancelled or zeroed out.
Another thing to remember... if you have fraud alerts texted or called to you and you are international, using an international SIM, you need to call them collect and add the international number to your profile. You can't do it in the app or online.

Re: Charles Schwab cannot overnight a replacement debit card

Got a call from Schwab today while traveling. ATM card was used for fraud in Japan (I'm not in Japan). Obvious fraud so card was blocked and they want to re-issue me a card. I asked for Overnight delivery as I'm traveling and need the debit card asap. Schwab said the fastest they can do for "expedited" service is 3-5 business days. I'm stunned. American Express, Capital One, HSBC, and Chase all overnight the card (or at worst 48 hours if you call late in the day). Schwab... nada. Up to 5 days (although even worse cause they process in 8 day batches!). Imagine being without a debit card for 5 days while traveling abroad with NO opportunity to get it faster whatsoever. I loved Schwab until I discovered this. Luckily as a frequent t...

Re: 529 to Roth IRA for Kid Still in College

You should be OK from general principles: must have earned income, must have 529 open for at least 15 years. "Still in college" is not a barrier AFAIK.
The unknown that you need to investigate is the treatment of this distribution (529 to Roth) by your state with regards to recapture any tax benefit or whether indeed they consider this qualified or unqualified from state taxation.
We have considered this but haven't pulled the trigger yet pending clarifications.
And also need to check with the two vendors (Roth and 529) about their processes. Some have paper-snail mail, some have online, some are push, some are pull.

OP here, thanks to all.
As I'm looking at SS estimates, when plugging in actual numbers in anypia, I have a difference (less $200 a month) if I "retire" next year with a zero contribution going forward.
Also, it is only calculating benefit at 62. I don't intend to claim till 70.

Is there a calculator/method that I can use to see what the monthly benefit is at different ages (67/70)?
When I look at my actual record in SSA, it estimates automatically that I will continue working till FRA, which is why I think there is a difference.

I am going to look at the bend points now.

We have Consumer Cellular which has been intermittently down so far since early AM.
It is an MVNO that mainly uses AT&T network.
I can't find information at CC about outages.
What happens when a primary network is down to the MVNOs?
Do they auto-switch to another network esp in areas which have adequate tower coverages?
What are other people seeing with their CC coverage?

Consulting 1099 and social security credits

I am thinking ahead to early retiring from my W-2 job and take up more consulting (next 24 months).
I am trying to figure out how to contribute to social security and continue accruing years.
For a variety of reasons, I had a late start to my 35-year clock and I would only have 23 when I ER.
What steps can I take as a 1099 to add to that, so my final PIA is better than it is now?
Should I always file Schedule C and do contributions on my taxes?
I anticipate not a huge income pull, maybe 15-20K a year at most (it is really a convenience thing as I am likely FIRE).

Appreciate your input!

Asians are the highest income and highest net worth racial group in the USA and the wealthy ones eat rice daily in my experience! Funny. Re: changing PCP just for 1 year?

Really depends on several things...
1. How much do you utilize healthcare particularly your PCP? More than once a year? If not, you could have a visit close to end of current cycle, then switch and then rejoin?
2. Is a potential new PCP on the same electronic health record as the current so there would be easy access to data and not much of reinventing the wheel?
3. Are the specialists or other services (pharmacy, rehab etc) remaining in network and how often do you use them?

Seeing that you are self-employed and presumably getting a 1099 from the telehealth gig, don't forget to factor in estimated tax payments along the way as expenses (unless you are having taxes deducted as a W-2 but even then you probably need est taxes).
And honestly, going "down" to 250K a year job may suck to you, but it is world's above many others and even many academic physicians.

I'll take a stab at this, but first I'd want to know if you intend to have any asset allocation towards international equities. Thus far, it seems all US. Reason is: if you were considering changing out your higher priced funds, I'd start in her Roth since no tax implications. If some international desired: swap out both of them for World aka VWTAX. If international not desired: VTSAX. That was easy. Now, to do things in the taxable, you first need to see what your cost basis is so you can decide to tax loss harvest (see wiki for details) vs. generating a large gain (and worse ordinary income gain if held < 1 year). If you are buying total mkt in taxable, consider ETFs instead of mutual funds and to avoid wash sales (also see wiki), like VT...

Welcome. Some people feel ETFs in taxable accounts are slightly more tax efficient due to lack of cap gains thrown off. However, you have to feel comfortable with the vagaries of ETFs (when to purchase in the day, limit vs. market orders, having "leftover change" when brokerage does not allow fractional share purchase). None of these are severely limiting but have a slight learning curve. You could do either but want to allow for "tax loss harvesting", read about it on the wiki. My vote would be VTSAX as you have regular contributions to FXAIX in the 401K and sales for TLH in the taxable (if you chose VOO) might create a wash sale (folks here vary on whether they are "substantially similar or not"), I just am u...

Re: DAF and H&R Block

Ugh, I listed as "cash" and put the FMV that you gave in their statement. I donated long-term shares.
Let me try other ways.
Thanks, boss.

DAF and H&R Block

2023 was the first year using Schwab's DAF for charitable contributions and as a result doing itemized deductions.
However in HRB, there is no special section to enter this.
I used the cash contributions and there is a column with check box for DAF.
I checked it, entered the amount and it triggered a "are you sure?" warning.
Other than that, nothing.

Is this correct? I didn't receive a special form from Schwab nor is there a specific interview for DAF.

Thanks in advance!

Re: IRS forms to file for investments

You will get 5498s for your tIRAs but they do not need to be submitted, just FYI.

You will get 1099-composite that has your INT (for interest) and DIV for dividends received, and B for sales in your brokerage, which will help you calculate gain/loss on Sch D of your return.
Doesn't matter if you made any withdrawals, these are for transactions in the tax year.
You should be able to download these or get in mail depending on what you selected as notification for tax forms.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

Watched Barbie. Turned it off after 15 minutes. Am I the only one who both watched it in entirety and was entertained by it from start to finish? I knew no details of it prior to watching it. That is the way I prefer it whenever I watch anything. Knowing nothing about what I am about to see. Only the bare minimum to intrigue me to watch it. While it got rave reviews and filled theatres, I don't think I've actually heard anyone in real life say they really liked it. My wife and kids were disappointed, I lasted all of ~10 minutes before I was asleep. First time around, I stopped it after 15 min. Second time, I was convinced by others to stick it out till at least 30 min and then decide. Glad I did. Caustically funny with several LOL moments....

We got it on DVD from the library. It was a great subject for a movie, but we only made it half way through. A more linear story with fewer flashbacks would have been better. We felt they were playing Twister with the timeline.
Saw today, also DVD free from public library.
I really enjoyed it, watched in stages but still an excellent story and performances.

Agree. My years in Chicago were highlighted by "eyeball freeze" cold. Blink or you get that crunchy film.
Nothing like -30s windchill to remind you to get indoors!

Re: 401K partial rollover to Schwab and Vanguard?

What your 401K provider is doing is an "indirect rollover" where they send you the check and you have to deposit it in either an IRA or another pretax account. You have to do this within 60 days for it to be considered eligible and non taxable.
In addition to the 60-day rollover rule, indirect rollovers are subject to the IRS's one-rollover-per-year rule. This regulation limits you to one indirect rollover per 12-month period (not just per tax year).

Re: Advice on Fund please

Can you list all the available options including their expense ratios?
And what is your desired asset allocation (100% equities? how much international?)?
Do you also have a Roth IRA?
