Re: WSJ Subscription at $4/month
I just went through this process earlier this week. My 12 months for $4/mo is expiring in a couple of weeks. (This price is only for new subscriptions, so I can't renew.) They wanted to raise the price up to around $39/mo, so my intention was to cancel. There is no way to cancel online, but the wait time on the phone was not long. When you cancel, they will offer you 12 months at $19-20/mo. If you say no to that offer, they will offer you a mobile-only version of the paper which is not advertised for $9.99/mo for 12 months. (Apparently, this is normally $19-20/mo.) Since I primarily read the paper on my phone (tablets will work too), I decided to take this offer. I will lose access to reading the articles on my computer, but that wasn't wor...

Re: Uncertain on generator purchase / finance
Your scenario seems similar to mine. We lose power for short stretches, but not normally in excessive of two days. We have a Generac whole-house generator that is powered by natural gas. It powers everything automatically after less than a minute of power loss. It was expensive, but it's been reliable for us and should last 20-30 years with annual maintenance for oil and filter changes plus occasional battery replacement. A good installer will test your home's power consumption and find the correctly sized model to fit your needs with a little extra buffer (i.e., ensures that your furnace, A/C, refrigerators, etc. all work properly on 100% generator power). I consider a generator to be a luxury, so I definitely wouldn't dip into emergency f...

Re: Tankless Water Heater - Struggling to Justify
For what it's worth when our hot water heater reached the end of its life a few years ago, we switched to tankless. We have a single Noritz tankless water heater powered by natural gas in the basement of our 3-story house. It works great and I'd get tankless again. For showers on the top level of our home, it does take about 45 seconds for the hot water to get going, but that's not a big deal to us. I like that it is more energy-efficient and reduces the risk of water damage in our finished basement. If you go this route, you will want someone to help you choose the correct size based on your anticipated usage (neither too small nor too large).

Re: Which new kid's bike to buy online?
I just faced the same question for my son's 9th birthday. The two bicycles I narrowed the search down to were:
1. Trek Precaliber 24"
2. Specialized Hot Rock 24"
The Trex ended up being sold out, so we went with the Specialized bicycle. It's a very nice, high quality mountain bicycle and my son really likes it.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

You might want to try Lensabl (https://www.lensabl.com). I bought a couple of prescription lenses from them and have been satisfied with their work.

Re: What workout equipment to get?
It's hard to say with understanding your comfort level, goals, and budget. However, if you are considering free weights, I would start with a bench that can be adjusted to be flat, decline, or incline all the way up to 90 degrees and a set of adjustable dumbbells. For example, there are the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells (5-52 lbs) or (10-90 lbs) and the Bowflex 5.1S Stowable Bench: https://www.bowflex.com/selecttech/1090/710000.html https://www.bowflex.com/accessories/5.1s-bench/100675.html (Feel free to choose a different brand. I'm just using this as one option.) If you are willing to spend more money, my favorite piece of equipment is a power rack by Hoist Fitness. However, this will require you to purchase free weights too. I have an old...

Re: Beneficiary Designations, Will, and Estate Planning
I was in a similar situation -- married with minor children. My spouse and I decided to create revocable living trusts (RLT) and then designated the trust as the beneficiary on our accounts. The general rule-of-thumb that our lawyer gave us was: 1) Make the trust the secondary beneficiary on tax-deferred accounts because spouses can roll over the deceased spouse's IRA or 401(k) assets into their own IRA tax-free. 2) For most other accounts (e.g., taxable investment accounts ) and term-life insurance policies, the trust should be the primary beneficiary. 3) Checking/Savings accounts should be joint accounts. If there are individual accounts, then it should be in the trust. 4) Primary residence should be owned tenants by the entirety and not ...

Re: Anyone Tried Youtube TV Yet?
I dropped Verizon awhile ago in favor of YouTube TV. In general, it's a very good service for the price and I like the DVR-in-the-cloud feature. However, it seems like something changed in the last few months that prevents fast forwarding through the commercials of many shows.

Re: Coffee Grinder recommendations
I'd suggest checking the grinder selection at Whole Latte Love (www.wholelattelove.com) and even calling them for advice in your price range. They were very helpful when I purchased from them several years ago. The general rule of thumb I was told was to spend 50% of your coffee equipment budget on the grinder because a great grinder can enhance a mediocre coffee/espresso maker, but the reverse is not true. Also, spending more on a quality grinder allows you to move up to better equipment later without needing to replace the grinder. I'm strictly an espresso drinker and opted for a higher-end grinder (Ceado 37S). I would definitely recommend Ceado and they have some less expensive models than the one I purchased, but none of them are inexpe...

I thought some people might be interested in Vanguard's 2018 investment outlook. It has very muted return expectations. Additionally, portfolio tilting isn't expected to help much. You can read the report here: https://advisors.vanguard.com/VGApp/iip/site/advisor/researchcommentary/article/IWE_InvRes2018EconomicOutlook. Page 27 has interesting charts. bago: Welcome to the Bogleheads Forum! Most Bogleheads have learned that it is nearly impossible to forecast the stock market. For example, last January we had 636 Bogleheads try to guess where the S&P 500 Index will be at the end of December. Less than a dozen guessed it would be as high as it is today. If you link to the contest, you will see that the average professional stock market f...
