Re: "The Stock Market Game"
Sorry to necro this thread, but I wanted to share my story. My 5th grader is currently doing a stock market/finance unit in class. They are going to be doing this stock market game. I have shared with him over the past couple years how we invest when he shows interest, nothing major just basics about indexing and boglehead principles. So I guess he asks the teacher if they could use index funds for the game. Teacher didn't know what index funds were. He explained to her what they were fairly accurately. We had a discussion when he got home about how indexing is great for long term investing but probably not for this game, especially in the current market. He didn't understand the point of the game if you weren't supposed to actually invest ...

Re: TLH for absolute dummies [Tax Loss Harvesting]
Thanks for the post it is helpful to my noob self. I have a question though.
Say I tax loss harvested VTIAX and bought VFWAX in my taxable account. I also have VTIAX in my Roth, which is going to get a dividend in September. I should turn off the reinvestment option on the VTIAX in my Roth? Is it ok to have that dividend from VTIAX go to another of my funds say Total US?

Re: Tax loss harvesting question
I am in the same situation, I had VTIAX in my taxable and in my roth. I sold the VTIAX in my taxable and purchased VFWAX. How do I avoid the wash sale from the 9/21 dividend of VTIAX in my Roth? Do I just turn off the auto reinvest option? Where should I direct that money to go if so instead of into VTIAX?
Edit: playing around on Vanguard it looks like I can invest the dividend from VTIAX into VTSAX in my roth, I assume this will prevent the wash sale and is ok?

We are on week 7 of Blue Apron and still loving it. I like the variety and convenience. The portion control is nice as well, both the wife and I have lost some weight. I have found their customer service to be excellent. Twice something has been missing from our box and they credited the whole box back to us, and we just went out and bought a package of chicken thighs. I prep, the wife cooks, the kids clean up, it works out nice. The only problem is figuring out what to do on non blue apron days...

My wife and I aren't really strong in the meal planing and shopping department. I feel we are eating healthier and it sure tastes better than what we were doing before. It is worth it to us, we don't like doing those things. We are eating out a lot less and eating properly portioned meals now. Tonight we had Chicken Paillards & Fresh Linguine with Summer Squash & Cherry Tomatoes it was delicious.

Backdoor Roth question
I have a traditional IRA at Vanguard that I would like to convert to a Roth. I am not sure if I can or not.
My other accounts are:
DEFINED CONTRIBUTION RETIREMENT PLAN (403b at Tiaa-Cref)
TAX-DEFERRED ANNUITY SAVINGS PLAN (Tiaa-Cref)
So I had a old 401k that I rolled over to Vanguard. My understanding is that would be a problem doing a IRA to Roth conversion so I tried to move it to my 403b account, Tiaa said it would be ok. They put it in my tax deferred anuity savings plan instead. That account now has about about 60k in it. Am I now able to convert my IRA to a Roth or will the tax deferred annuity savings plan cause me problems? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Re: Investing Questions and Review
I appreciate the replies! Thanks for the fund recommendations Duckie, International is ok in taxable correct? There is some kind of tax credits that we can take if its in taxable account? Dandy, we feel like we are finally able to breath a bit, it has been a long road with lots of loans and a few mistakes  to get here. I read so much about compounding interest it makes me feel pretty far behind already. I guess we kind of want to take the middle road, invest and pay of some debt at the same time, as it is now we will be paying ~$1300 extra per month on the loans. Our goal would be 2 million at the least, more would be better of course :D. The asset allocation is a good point. My thought was we are so far out, probably ~30 years from r...

Yes lots of questions, we still fairly new to this. Thank you for your replies! We have paid off all debts greater than 6% and our car loans. I don't like debt, but I also don't like feeling we are missing investing. The remaining debts are at 2.6% which seems pretty low once you factor in inflation I figured it would be better mathematically to invest than pay off the remaining debts. Yes, it looks like it would be cheaper to break the funds apart, and probably easier to re balance. What funds in the 403b would best approach the 3 fund portfolio? Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Institutional VBTIX .07 seems like the bond choice, but what about total stocks and international? I did check and we can move the roll over ira into the 403b...
