It is OK to live a little. Set appropriate savings goals and enjoy the rest of your money. You can project compounded returns on deferred expenses to make yourself a virtual millionaire in the future, the same way you can die next week hit by a bus.

I think is it primarily a patron driven channel. CNBC provides the platform to cause people to trade stocks frequently by spreading irrelevant BS about the market. Financial industry, Hedge fund companies and CEOs need an avenue to spread lies and panic - and that is CNBC. Their favorite topic is wallstreetbets these days because that probably helps their cause.

Re: Non-US citizen: Trad 401k vs Roth 401k vs Taxable account

Hello all, I am Indian citizen and my company was not offering 401k till now. This year, company decided to start offering 401k and it has both Trad and Roth 401k option, but no company match. I have been investing in my personal taxable account. I have more than 30+ years to reach 59 1/2 years, so not sure I will still be in US by that time. I am in 24% tax bracket. Trad 401k: I will pay less in taxes upfront, not sure beneficial or not (30+ years to see any benefits), both contributions and gains will have tax implications and penalty for premature withdrawal Roth 401k: After tax contribution, money grows tax free, can withdraw contributions without tax and penalty after 5 years, only gain will incur 10% penalty and tax Based on this, it...

Re: It this a wash sale for TLH purposes if I have stock in taxable/tax-advantaged

I own a stock A in my Roth IRA and my taxable brokerage. Here is a timeline: Bought 6 Stock A in Taxable - 12/22/2022 Bought 5 Stock A in Roth IRA - 12/16/2022 Bought 4 Stock A in Taxable - 12/22/2022 Bought 2 Stock A in Taxable - 1/13/2022 (within 30 days!!) Total: 5 Stock A in Roth IRA, 12 Stock A in Taxable. If I sold all 12 Stock A in Taxable for TLH purposes, would it be a wash sale because of my existing stock in my Roth IRA, therefore I haven't "closed out my position"? If so, should I just take the wash sale anyways since I'm planning on rebuying into the Stock after the 30 days are up and I believe there are only 2 lots that would have the cost basis carry over (thus taking a loss on the 10 lots)? Please let me know if I...

The articles and forums you are reading are targeted for a specific audience. This forum as an example, is overpopulated with types who make it look like everyone is doing it.

Most people do not max their 401k - this is a fact.

"Max out your 401k" is the most common advice because for most people that is the right thing to do before you look at other options.

Re: Tile bluetooth trackers

I use tile for my wallet and keys. Tile's network is really non-existent in my opinion. It will not work for stolen things in real time unless they are right next to you. If you drop a tag in place with a lot of foot traffic like an airport or a movie theater, maybe the network will work? I mostly use it to find my wallet, phone and keys in my home (under the couch/where my kid hides it) or in one of my cars. The last location my phone saw them is what works and the sound helps me find the tag. It is helpful if you leave your keys/wallet at work or a friends house while visiting, but not for theft. Bluetooth range is not that good - definitely not 450ft in real world. I cannot ring tags in the other rooms, or my garage from the living room ...

Re: prioritizing 457(b)

I would think of a non-govt 457b as a taxable account that does not have loss harvesting capability, but allows you gain harvest cost free when needed. Is this account limited to specific funds? Some accounts have the capability to link to a brokerage and buy anything on the open market in that case you can use this account to trade funds/stocks that you may want to hold for short term.

457b can also be great early retirement tools, but look very closely at the fees, terms and conditions on withdrawals. Some of the non-govt plans can be very weird.

Re: Why take a capital loss?

archurisk wrote: Sun Jan 09, 2022 5:36 pm I'm familiar with tax loss harvesting, and I understand how this utilizes capital losses to your advantage. By selling, for instance, shares of a mutual fund at a loss and purchasing shares of a similar fund, you mitigate capturing an actual loss in your investments. At the same time, you now can use the capital loss you've realized to offset capital gains or ordinary income.

But aside from tax loss harvesting, what other situations would you want to take a capital loss? I'm particularly interested in the case where your portfolio is comprised of mutual funds like VTSAX held in a taxable account.
Capital losses can also help you rebalance or gain harvest from funds/stocks you would like to dispose.

Moving to San Francisco? Ugh. If you don't mind your daughter essentially moving to an open-air drug market, where the addicted homeless will rob stores in broad daylight and packs of organized thieves will hit her little Civic parked on the street, eventually, sure, encourage her to move there. It's not a society where your daughter can thrive or ever feel safe. Know that San Francisco has experienced a mass exodus since Covid struck, most tech workers have moved to Sacramento, the Sierra foothills and Tahoe with an ability to remote work. I do believe it was the largest city that has experienced a decrease in rent prices last year. California lost a US Rep seat and electoral vote in 2020 for the first time in statehood; there is a reason...

Re: Living in San Francisco

Owning a car in SF is certainly expensive. It is easier to uber everywhere than pay for a car garage and parking spaces when you commute. Most apartments charge for a parking space that costs between 300 - 700/month - and you will also pay for a garage spot at work if you work in the city and drive there.

Car break-ins have been happening in cities for decades, it's a cost of living in a city. Yes, it is factored into insurance along with city parking damages.

I know because I have been a recipient myself at times, even when my deviations resulted in outperformance, which is partly why I don't discuss my own investment strategy on the open forum any longer, though I continue to discuss it with those genuinely interested via PM.

If you do not have insurance, I would still try to dismiss it by writing in an argument to the court. Don't just pay the ticket, make the system work for your money. Get the officer to show up to court and do paperwork. Move your court date as many time as they allow. Suck up Arkansas court and public resources and gum up the works - they deserve it. If you just pay the ticket, you are encouraging them to continue this scam. Some states allow police departments to pay themselves from these revenues. If your son is still thinking about it, then it is probably not a "preferred" company that he is head over heel for.

1) Ask for more time
2) If they say no, accept offer
3) Reject it later when you have a better offer

That is how it works in Tech. I know many folks who joined and left companies within a week or two because they have a better offer. No lives have been ruined by doing this.

Re: BMW X3. Battery $536.00

Hello all At my annual service ..BMW says my battery is getting old and I should consider replacement ... (bmw x3 2015). .... it works perfect at moment ..I drive very little and is always on one of those chargers ( ILLINOIS is my state ) .. I tested it with multimeter and it read well above 12 v Should I just ignore this advice from BMW. until I feel I need to change it as it exhibits slowing to start ect ect ... the bill for this will be $536..for battery , installation and registration. When the times comes ..could I just get costco to put in a battery. ..or is the registration a problem? ... would I be crazy to be $536.00 to keep matters simple. Thank you ...$536 seemed steep but may be I am out of touch with prices. What do you mean &...

You may or you may not owe taxes. Depends on how tax efficient your investments are and how liquid they are so you can control your tax rate.
