We moved out of our home of 35 years. The community had changed and it was time to move on. Looked for an area that had more appealing elements...better weather, lower cost of living, more activities..sports, culture. So far, so good.

If I needed money and my equity wasn't over its target percentage, then I'd sell some of my bond fund shares.
Since one of the two of them is typically over its target percentage, I just let my portfolio tell me what to sell.
It's really just as simple as answering the question "What do I have too much of?" - then sell some of that.

Good reminder that the greatest thing about being able to retire (or just enjoying your life) is to do what ever makes you happy; and that doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money to achieve that.

I was thinking at what age do retirees plan to or have removed their shackles on spending? That is, you feel you are at a point/age in life that the clock is ticking and it's time to ramp up the spending.

Agree...retired 12 years... I take out what I want when I need it, never in enormous amounts. Not alot of variability in my portfolio over the years due to withdrawals.fortunefavored wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 11:57 am I think if you ask Bogleheads who are actually retired and spending from their portfolio, the answer is "they spend whatever they feel like spending."
Withdrawal strategies are more fun to talk about before you retire - it passes the time, helps you hone in on your number, etc.
Once you retire, you tend to just keep on doing what you've always been doing. I am entering year 4, and my withdrawals have ranged from <1% to 6%. At no point did I think "huh, I should spend an extra 2%" or "huh, I should really spend less than 6%."
