You won't be in a 12% or 22% bracket at retirement, because those brackets are going away.
As I said in another thread:
You might want to delay claiming SS and do Roth conversions while the tax brackets are at the current lower rates, because federal income tax rates are scheduled to increase. "Beginning in 2026, the statutory rates will be 10 percent, 15 percent, 25 percent, 28 percent, 33 percent, 35 percent, and 39.6 percent."
Also consider that when one dies, the other will eventually have to deplete the IRAs, but will be doing so at the "single" tax rates.
Also consider avoiding IRMAA.

So your investment strategy is to rely on hearsay so-called success stories from "friends"?
Even if investing in China would be lucrative (which I doubt), one should consider "conscious investing".

And yes, I know I have some China exposure in VTI/VXUS but that's not something I can control.

Re: Another social security claiming strategy & Roth conversion question
You might want to delay claiming SS for both until reaching 70, because federal income tax rates are scheduled to increase. "Beginning in 2026, the statutory rates will be 10 percent, 15 percent, 25 percent, 28 percent, 33 percent, 35 percent, and 39.6 percent."
So then for tax years 2022-2025 you should consider doing Roth conversions while the tax brackets are at the current lower rates and you don't have SS income.
Also consider that when one dies, the other will eventually have to deplete the IRA, but will be doing so at the "single" tax rates.

Re: New Brokerage Account for Teenager
She will need to open an account online at Vanguard (her username/password). Teach her about good passwords. Make sure her name on new account exactly matches her name on current IRA (for example don't use initial for middle name if middle name is spelled out in current IRA). This will avoid dealing with the "one and the same" affidavit. Then the two of you get to spend half a day on the phone with Vanguard. I'd avoid moving to another institution at this point because it will be overly complicated and may require medallion signature. It would be easier for her to transfer to another institution after the account is in her control.
BTW, it's Roth, not ROTH.

Re: FI and Young, but not close to SS second bend point
I wonder what percentage of people actually even get to the second bend point? Outside of this forum, I'd say probably not a lot. It would require an average of over $75k of SS earnings (in today's dollars) each year over 35 years. That would mean making $25k in 1987 (which was considered good pay at the time) and ramping up to $75k by 2022. So many start collecting SS at age 62 without having 35 good years on the record. And earnings over the limit don't help.

Unfortunately, many providers require or heavily pressure their customers to go paperless. Deceptive popups cause many seniors to go paperless when that wasn't their intent. Even tax forms can be delivered paperless. Once providers become aware of the customer's death, they should be required to switch back to mailed statements. And of course important items frequently get lost by USPS. You'll need to try to gain access to the deceased's email.

Re: Enough!...Enough?? 1 more year to go before retirement.
Question: Why are folks recommending the survivor benefit option (presumed to be 42k/year) vs the non survivor benefit option for the pension (presumed to be 50k/year)? Couldn't the 8k/year difference be covered by 200k in life insurance for 30 years for much less than 8k*30 years=240k? There is not a non-survivor option in NJ. The lowest option is 25% to survivor. Wife would have to agree in writing to accept this option (many won't agree). Many people are not insurable, or expensive to insure for 30 years. USAA (for one) won't offer a 30 year policy to any 55 year old male. If husband died right after retirement, wife would lose $37,500 per year but gain $250,000 insurance lump sum. The insurance amount only replaces about 6 years and 8 ...

Your social security projection seems high for a teacher. Is that the amount from your SSA statement or have you adjusted it for actual (lower) earnings going forward? What about spousal SS? https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/quickcalc/spouse.html Sounds like you should choose the 100% pension survivor option, which would be the lowest amount payable to you/spouse. How can you fund $20k retirement from side hustle other than Roth accounts ($14k max once she hits 50)? I'd leave NJ to avoid 6% taxes, but some insurance plans penalize you for leaving the state...."out of network". With your net worth, pension and SS of course you can "retire", but I wouldn't call it "retirement" if you're doing the side hustle. You've done ...

Certainly the prime should have told you that they were overbooked and were going to contract out everything, including project management. Which isn't exactly true since the prime is presumably managing the construction manager. Maybe this is a breach of contract. I don't know, not a lawyer.scienceguy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 1:17 pm Don't I have a reasonable, legally enforceable expectation (even without a contract stipulation to that effect) that if I go to McDonalds for dinner (based on their reputation, recommendations from friends, etc) the food they sell me will be McDonalds food, not Burger King food in a McDonalds wrapper?

Many construction contracts require the prime contractor to perform a stated percentage of the work.
In building construction, it's not unusual for the prime contractor to be nothing more than a construction manager that does none of the actual construction.
This is not an ethical question. It's contractual.

Assuming it is not one of the six states that have inheritance tax, and the value doesn't exceed the federal estate tax exemption, there is nothing to fear.
One way to avoid taxes is to die while still owning the real estate. Another is to sell if below the exclusion amount and have no capital gains tax to pay.
A bad idea would be for the parents to gift the real estate to the children.

Never again. Yeah I’m not sure of the details, but I believe there may be some rule that each person needs to be in their seat at departure, and then you can move after. I assume each flight attended May enforce this differently I was on an international flight. After everyone was seated, middle-seat guy sneaked up to sit in a window seat near the ...

Re: Why would a mover only accept gold for payment?
So many questions. If you pay with one ounce coins, does he give change in gold dust? Do you tip with gold nuggets? Whose scale is used to weigh the gold and is it properly calibrated? Does he accept gold fillings and jewelry? Only gold, not silver? Does he pay for his fuel, taxes, license and insurance in gold? Does he pay his employees in gold? Does he pay social security taxes in gold? Are you concerned about aiding someone who is obviously engaged in tax evasion???

Re: booked flights on American without assigned seats
There is a slight chance you can then switch to an exit row. If someone in an exit row does not want the responsibility, or does not feel that they can lift the window exit door and put in in the seat, and they ask for a volunteer to change seats. That happened once in all the time I have flown, though I was in an aisle seat. My hand shot up when the flight attendant asked if someone would take the responsibility of an exit row. At least on that flight, I was informed that I would not be served alcohol, bit maybe this was because I got a better seat. I didn't care since I never drink alcohol on a flight. Looks like American not only allows alcohol in the exit row, but encourages it by making it free! https://postimg.cc/DJtBws4t

Maybe you have an electrical problem that is related to your 12 volt charger in your other post?

I wouldn't do that.Jack FFR1846 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 1:04 pm Let them assign the seat. Then, after they close the door, pay attention and look for an open aisle seat. If there's one, go. I've done this many times and so long as you're not going into business class, nobody cares. Of course these days, with completely full flights, you don't get that situation as much as back in the days before Covid.

Good thing is, there aren't any middle seats on these aircraft.MathWizard wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 11:58 am You are gong to end up in a middle seat (possibly between two broad shouldered people),
I'll keep checking to see if any cheap seats open up.
