Re: How much time in Costa Rica?

Two weeks is fine but three could be more relaxing. As mentioned above, the roads in CR can be tiring. Most tourists make the mistake of trying to see too many different places and miscalculating the effort and drive time. I suggest spending 4-5 days in Monteverde area (which could also include Aren...

Re: Shopping for college

I recommend "Who gets in and Why", a new book with valuable info, I listened to it last week and learned a great deal. The middle section is dry but does a deep dive into how we got to where we are in regards to college admissions -- a bit depressing. The last 1/4 though has some very prac...

Re: Bogleheads community discussion - Coronavirus

I am looking for insight as to why older (at risk) neighbors, friends and family are still running numerous errands throughout the day. I have been most frustrated with this aspect of the virus to date. Examples: 1) Father in-law continues to run to grocery store every couple days for random things ...

Re: Toy overload alternatives for grandparents

Good suggestions above. I would add STEM toys (ex.magnetiles, monthly science boxes - kids love getting mail), art supplies, etc when your kids are older. I would also mention maybe you should pick your battles. Grandparents that I speak with are tired of sit down discussions in which their kids tel...

Re: Physical activity suggestions for a non athletic youth

The simple fact you are paying attention and caring will most likely mean it will work out in the long term. I agree with the modeling the behaviors as much as possible, martial arts suggestions and also with weight lifting being safe for that age, much can be done with just simple body weight exerc...

Re: Gift for niece who is graduating as a Physician Assistant.

I have been a physician assistant for about 18 years. Below are some things I wish I had or had done when I started out. I second the stethoscope mentioned above, it makes a difference and they do get lost so backup is great. Not sure how much you want to spend but a one year membership to the AAPA ...

Re: Going to "cash-only" restaurants?

Two of the busiest places here in Boulder CO are cash only — The Mountain Sun and sister Southern Sun. Both are packed all day long. There is an ATM in back without a hefty fee and they take checks. I sometimes get annoyed at the policy but the staff are so nice and the best part is that if you do n...

Re: Would you eat lab grown meat?

Absolutely. Lab grown meat without the antibiotics, slaughtering, and other chemicals farmers spray around would be better in my opinion. There was a recent WSJ article about farmers no longer being able to drink their own well water because of contamination. In the article it was also pointed out w...

Re: Net worth of $3.7M at age 47 - can I retire?

The take home message is that you are close. You can either make some big changes (moving, slashing expenses), you can change jobs as you do not need much more income each year, or you can try to remove the things about your job which may be causing the most bother. This is a great situation to be i...

Re: How did YOU choose your career?

I am a Physician Assistant and I always knew that I wanted to work directly with people. I had an interest in health and science and narrowed it down to PT or PA. I also carefully thought about what is a good paying job I could get with my intelligence where there will always be jobs. At the last mo...

I have met many people complaining about how crowded Manuel Antonio has become over the last few years. It is far to get too so you may want to skip that part.

Re: Retirement - Living in Colorado

Need more information to answer this question as it all depends on your main interests. Colorado has great places to live but really depends on --- need to be close to airport, hobbies/sports, desire to be close to a university, food interests, arts/theater interests.. etc etc. I live in Boulder and...

Re: Job/ life advise

Based on how you described each position I advise you stay where you are for now for the following reasons: 1) Front desk can be one of the most stressful positions in a medical office. The phone calls can be very difficult and patients will often take out something on a front desk employee when the...

Re: Best Choices for a Summer Place in the Rockies

Agree with Salida -- easy access to outdoors, other parts of Colorado, river activities, some art related festivals, cheaper than Crested Butte. Downside is may be too far from airport and too small but for me that is the plus as we live in Boulder and the traffic is getting to be too much.

Re: Family winter beach vacation recommendations?

I would recommend you reconsider this idea. Given the ages of your kids it may not be worth it. I think you should consider taking a week off of work, hiring a little extra childcare, then fill your days with nice lunch with your spouse, more exercise, perhaps a local music show, museum, etc. There ...

Re: Concierge medicine Worth It????

I have really changed my mind 180 degrees in regards to this issue over the last 7 or so years. As a physician assistant in surgery I can tell you two common scenarios where I think it is worth it. In general, like many things in life, the value is only seen if you use it. On a weekly basis I see th...

Re: advice on life/work situation/stop full-time work?

Thanks for all the replies. Valuable advice and points all around. Physician on Fire, a blog I love, nailed it accurately. Much of my identity is in my job and I enjoy caring for neighbors and friends. On the other hand not only does the PA job take up 90% of my time I would say it takes up 95% my e...

Re: advice on life/work situation/stop full-time work?

It is a fairly small junky house, a ranch, no debt. I do find my work fulfilling but it just keeps coming. Every week I have a different 1-3 patients with terrible diagnosis that I worry about a great deal. There are days I love it but then realize in a couple weeks it will be someone else with a ca...

advice on life/work situation/stop full-time work?

Thanks ahead of time for any advice on this situation. I have found it is hard to find advice as it is difficult to share the below specifics with friends, most of whom are struggling more. I have learned a great deal from this site and appreciate any input you have. I am thinking of leaving my full...

Re: Anyone moved from NY?

I moved from Long Island 11 years ago, travel back every three months for business and can tell you leaving was one of the best decisions I ever made. The only reasons to stay are if you are very close with family or happen to make amazing use of the beach or city. For me it is too crowded, property...
